DON NAGEL, SEPS
Don was born in Pittsburgh, PA. He received a bachelor's degree in advertising design from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a master's degree in printmaking from Wayne State University. He worked in Detroit ad agencies for over 30 years where he became the head art director on General Motors Corporate, Pontiac, Mr. Goodwrench, Budd and Dow Agricultural accounts. Don and his wife Joyce, moved to Hilton Head in 1986. He became a freelance graphic designer until his retirement in 1998. He has received several awards from local and national art director's clubs, including the New York Art Director's Club and a Cleo award for television. Don works on Art Spectrum sanded pastel paper and does an underpainting, with complementary colors using hard pastel and alcohol. He builds up the color and values with NuPastel and finishes with various soft pastels. His paintings hang in private and corporate collections and have received awards from regional and national pastel societies. Joyce and Don have made several group painting trips to France and Italy. They have teamed up to give exciting duo workshops called “Two Points of View … or there's more than one way to look at a landscape.” The students learn a variety of techniques to help them gain insight and develop their own style of pastel painting. Their most recent workshop was held in Nairobi, Kenya.
