"I have come to realize that tonal contrast is very dominant in my choice of compositions. I have since I was about 12 years old been in love with Vermeer's portrait of a girl in a turban.
I owe my beginnings in painting to South Africa, as I did not seriously start painting until I was on a working holiday there beginning in 1969. Also, it was the first time I had lived in a big city (Pretoria), so the buzz of a then flourishing art scene really set my themes in subjects, etc. I love posters, paintings with a powerful statement, capturing the personality in portraits, and designing logos." |
