Artist's Statement
Faces so lined with character that lifetimes of stories lay just beneath their skin... a
waterscape observed in silence from the deck of my boat... figures moving through daily
tasks while laden with untold hopes... these are the things that inspire me and find their
way into my art. Whether I pick up pencil or watercolor for a realistic portrayal or
choose pastel or oil for an impressionistic flavor, my work is about the feelings that lie
just below the observable surface. I can't remember ever not making art and I cherish
those moments when time is suspended and my hand and mind move as one. Believing
that accurate renderings are a cornerstone to expressive art I have worked for years
with live models to perfect my skills. When the drawing is correct the creative choice of
medium and color deliver emotion while depicting the play of light against shadow.
These critical ingredients, handled with delicate transparency or full-bodied impasto,
serve to expose and conceal the secrets of my subject. When the viewer enjoys this
"story behind the scene" it serves to further illustrate my philosophy that every day we
live is a fresh canvas waiting to be painted upon.
