"My preferred subject matter is nature, architecture and still life. To be able to take
these genres into a more personal realm has been my goal. An image may be
minimal or complex as long as it is esthetically pleasing and "works". An image
may begin as a formal problem or it may be inspired by a bit of subject matter. It
can have an anecdotal origin. It can be a single photograph with a minor addition,
an unaltered photograph or a complex combination of many photographs.
Photographs have been composited from the beginning of the art form by means of
over-printing, double exposure and sandwiched negatives. New technology allows the artist photographer
greater facility to accomplish these results.
The computer as a fine arts tool allows great flexibility in creating varied images as
an end in themselves or as part of mixed media compositions. The desire to
completely control my images was instrumental in my turning to this new tool. My
first work was classic black and white photography, and I am delighted that it is
possible to simulate this in the digital darkroom.
My photographic digital composites are original images. They are photographs that
have been further developed in a digital darkroom using the Adobe PhotoShop
program. They may originate as 35mm film scanned directly into the
program with a film scanner or prints scanned directly into the program with a flat
bed scanner. Most recently I have worked with a digital camera or placed subjects directly on the flat
bed scanner. The prints are archival ink jet prints on specially coated watercolor
paper. The sizes listed are done on my own printer. They can be enlarged
considerably at a service bureau. Each
image is limited to an edition of 20 prints."
