Still Life Study
October 2-4, 2015 (9 am - 4 pm) — "I have found the still-life to be the most biographical form of painting. Even a self-portrait is not so revealing of an artist's personality. The objects, atmosphere, lighting and composition bring forth a sense of the artist's being. His mood, character and interest all are reflected in the still life." This workshop will be centered on utilizing objects of personal interest to develop compositions and design. For three days we will work emphasizing form and value relationships through the use of lighting and color. Marc will give a demonstration the first morning followed by individual instruction. Painting from Photo Reference
October 12-16, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Some subjects are almost impossible to paint from life. Artists often use photographs for reference. Dawn teaches you how to use the photograph as something to "refer to" in the process of creating a painting rather than an image to copy. Learn techniques through lecture, power point presentations, and demonstrations as well as one-on-one instruction. Building Strong Foundations through Underpainting for Oil or Acrylic Painters
October 17-18, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Underpainting is a powerful and reliable method that works out issues of composition, placement, and value at the very start, helping you to avoid costly mistakes and the need to rework your painting later on. Many painters have tried underpainting, or what they thought was underpainting, but were unsuccessful because they did not fully understand the method. The workshop will cover the specific technique (for oil or acrylic painters) for building strong and successful underpaintings, as well as the conceptual framework behind underpainting: that the simplified value structure and simplified shapes developed in the underpainting create stronger and more enduring compositions. The technique for underpainting in oil or acrylic is slightly different, and the instructor will demonstrate in both media. Visit website

Emphasizing Abstraction - Master Class Intensive
February 19-21, 2016 — The first 2 days we will be working in the studio from reproductions including older and 20th century masters, we'll move through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction - composition with color and shape - is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Significant emphasis will also be placed on drawing interpretively from the images, as the most abstract graphic language, with part of each day spent engaged in a series of exercises using crayons and graphite to complement our examination of form with acrylic paints. On the third day, in downtown Sedona, we will focus on noticing how everyday architectural space is really extraordinary visually, and translate that awareness into drawing. Visit website

Visual Dreaming in the Life Studio
February 23-25, 2016 — This 3 day workshop approaches working from 'life' through the graphic priorities of 'painting' as opposed to anatomy or any ideas about 'how to' paint the figure as in neoclassical ateliers. For us, the presence of the 'model' will serve as a shifting and relative point of reference within the studio and our focus will be on response to the visual possibilities presented there in the room. Large themes of inquiry will embrace the fluid nature of composition, the subjectivity of perception, clarity of observation and, the role of the loaded brush improvisationally informed by color. Much emphasis will also be placed on drawing with graphite and crayons. And we'll use acrylic paint on paper as our primary medium. Visit website

Plein Air Painting for the Studio Artist (and everyone else)!
August 1-4, 2016 — Whether you have never stepped out of your studio or are a seasoned Plein Air painter, you will truly enjoy looking at the landscape in a slightly different way. Having spent 40+ years as an advertising veteran, I view the world slightly differently than other artists. As a seasoned art director, I know what constitutes a great design. And creating a pleasing landscape painting is no different. We will explore focal points, visual pathways, drawing execution, value and color, and one of my very favorite topics… Color Temperature! All of these elements play a huge role in creating a successful painting and we will work together to achieve just that. Visit website

The Plein Air Landscape (Oil or Acrylic)
August 23-25, 2016 — The primary focus of this workshop will be painting landscapes en plein air, rain or shine. (In the case of inclement weather, we'll paint beautiful vistas from the comfort of the porch at the Gibson House.) We'll explore the entire process of creating a strong landscape painting: from building an effective composition to working with value and color and, finally, to finishing with sensitively chosen details. An emphasis will be placed on proper seeing - looking closely at the existing color and tonal relationships - and on understanding and manipulating what is seen. We will be working with the basic elements of painting, seeing them anew and in ways that can improve the craft of your painting. Visit website
