Introduction to Abstract Painting
May 31 - August 2, 2016 (Tuesdays, 6-9pm) — Would you love to paint abstractly, but don’t know where to start? Are you seeking to boost the compositional or emotional content in your work? Learn how to make artwork that departs from direct description of observed subject matter. Examine a range of different artists’ approaches to abstraction to broaden your understanding of the history and possibilities of this mode of working. Inspiration and subject matter for studies in abstraction will come from observation of the natural world, existing works of art, symbolic abstraction, and the visual device of the gesture. Students will work primarily in oil or acrylic paint, but drawing and sketchbook studies will be used as a way to generate ideas and solve problems. Drawing and painting experience required. Landscape Painting/Observation and Concept
July 19-21, 2016 — The purpose of this class is multifold: to paint from the landscape as a means of investigating exterior space, color and light; to incorporate into these paintings your comprehensive understanding of art historical styles; and to develop a contemporaneous manner in utilizing the landscape motif within your own work. We will go out to paint for the three hours of class with the purpose to better visualize color, light and space in this short time. This will lead to a richer understanding of color interaction that can benefit successive paintings that you do on your own. I will begin with a demonstration and end with a short critique in order to get the necessary feedback and to establish a better student/instructor understanding. Visit website

Understanding Simplification and Massing for Landscape Painters
October 1-2, 2016 (9am-4pm) — The ability to simplify — to translate nature’s complexity into fewer and more readable shapes and patterns — is the most important skill for a landscape painter. Painting or drawing a shape is not that difficult, but seeing a shape through layers of color, detail and complexity requires a practiced shift in perception — an ability to see the forest and the trees. In this workshop, working from your own photos and those supplied by the instructor, you will do several guided painting and drawing exercises designed to encourage your eye and hand toward the broad, simplified shapes that are the backbone of any landscape composition. Time will also be set aside for a review of your own works (optional) as they relate to the workshop topic. Visit website
