Seeing and Painting your Subject
August 13-15, 2013 (9am-4pm) — What does the act of 'seeing' mean for an artist? Find the answer in this workshop as we explore the specifics of learning to 'see' the subject, interpreting the visual elements, and executing it all onto canvas. We will discuss the way the optics of the eye work as well as seeing light, form, atmosphere and space. The fundamental principles of painting - composition, drawing, value, color, and edges will also be stressed. Students will sharpen their focus by pushing for simplification of form, shape, and the larger masses. Each day we will begin with a demo and lecture covering the principles mentioned above followed by a fun day of painting and personal instruction. Students may choose to work from their favorite photos and field sketches or still life subjects set up in class. Visit website

Acrylic Underpinnings
August 20, 2013 (9am-4pm) — You will learn to use "acrylic underpinnings" to set the stage for vibrant colors in your paintings. Using a photo that Julie will supply, watercolor and oil painters alike will begin their paintings in exactly the same way: with dark acrylic accents. Watercolorists, try a new support for your paintings! Using "acrylic underpinnings" is an excellent technique to use for watercolor on canvas. Oil painters will use their personal favorite canvas or board. The benefits of this method are numerous and enable you to get the bones of your painting established and "locked in" at the very beginning. It's a unique approach to both oil and watercolor that will add considerably to your repertoire of painting techniques! Visit website

November 5-8, 2013 (10 - 5 on first day, then 9 - 4 with a one hour lunch) — Jan's experience and enthusiasm create an atmosphere of fun and spontaneity inspiring new directions and discovery through innovative combinations of design and materials. The layering method yields a magnetism that is particular to mixed media. Many techniques, materials, compositions and above all emotion, play off each other in creating the work. Part of the adventure is not knowing where you are going until you get there! You will become thrilled with possibility as you journey through this abstract painting process. You will learn to let go of painting habits and gain the knowledge of layering textures, colors and feelings while executing shapes utilizing a structure of positive and negative space. All of the paints used will be waterbased. Visit website

Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure. Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Visit website

Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork
Begin your course any time — Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing. Private Painting Lessons in Watercolor or Acrylic
By Appointment (24/7 Online) — Get personal one-on-one painting lessons from artist & teacher Ann Bell in her Houston studio at mutually convenient time and day. Ann has taught hundreds of people how to paint in watercolor and acrylic. You can begin to paint for fun in as little as one 4 hour lesson. Even if you have never painted before. Even if you can't draw a straight line. Even if you "don't have talent." Of course, expertise takes longer, but once you understand the basics, books, videos and group classes will make more sense. Individual attention speeds your progress. All materials are provided for your first lesson. Online classes are available if you can't come to Houston. Near downtown, close to all freeways.
