Abstract Painting: Series as a Process
May 4-7, 2014 (9am-4pm) — When we say "abstract painting", we usually mean a painting that is not in the business of representing an object outside itself. You will learn a variety of playful and accessible techniques for applying paint to paper, and discover how to create variety, contrast, layering and rhythm, to make unique, personal abstract compositions. Color Strategies for Landscape Painters
May 10-11, 2014 (9am-4pm) — The landscape painter strives to use color in ways that capture the beauty of outdoor light and convey a sense of atmosphere. Through a series of short paintings referencing photos and masterworks, you will learn how a color strategy serves as a framework to focus your color intention and keep you on track. The workshop will cover limited palettes as a means to guide color direction; "color wheel" strategies like analogous and complementary; the power of limited color groups; and color studies as a means to test various strategies. This workshop supports the notion that although a color strategy may partially borrow from nature, it is largely orchestrated in the mind of the artist. You will be encouraged to be a color explorer. Figure Workshop: Drawing, Painting, Collage and Relief
July 20-26, 2014 (Monday-Friday, 9:15 am-12:15 pm) — In this unique figure workshop we will take a fresh and creative approach by focusing on subjectivity - where the artist is encouraged to explore the subject from his or her own unique perspective. To accomplish this, the focus will be on exploring a combination of ways to work with the model that will steer us away from rendering, toward the more thrilling approach of composing and, closer to the excitement of reality. We will create using a variety of methods: drawing, painting with acrylic, collages with cut color paper, and relief sculptures. Landscape Painting From the Inside Out
August 14-17, 2014 — Working both in the studio and outdoors, this workshop takes an organized approach to learning the essential concepts of landscape painting. Topics include site selection and limited focus, simplification and massing, composition, starting a painting with a simple color-based block-in, and color. Though not a workshop for first-time painters, it is ideal for those who have painted before and now want a strong foundation in landscape painting, or for those who want to hone their existing landscape skills. Artistic Explorations - Individual critiques
August 18-22, 2014 (9am-4pm) — Without a clear declaration of what one wants to say in one's painting, it can become just an imitation. Skip challenges painters to rewrite the rules their way, to consider their choices and shake up their status quo. Through lecture, demonstration and critique, Skip guides each painter to refine their intention and express it in new and honest ways. With insight, warmth and humor, Skip brings out the best in each painter. Everyone will bring his or her chosen subject: figure, landscape, still life, or abstraction. This can be from a photo, drawing, sketch, or imagination. The week will be given to exploring that choice in every way possible to produce work that is most appropriate and personal for each student. Demonstrations will be done in water mediums. Big Fat Art
September 8-11, 2014 (9am-4pm) — Big Fat Art is all about process, and about working on multiple pieces. We start on big fat cheap drawing paper with inexpensive paints and drawing materials so that you can't possibly worry about Wasting Good Paint. We work on multiple pieces at once, starting each one using specific materials within given parameters. Then we do another "pass" on all of them, with a different set of parameters. After the second pass, we use the pieces-in-process as playgrounds for trying many different things. Loosening up is key. Then, we move on to good paper. We start the pieces in a similar spontaneous mode, but work on them longer, and make the effort to bring them to resolution. Visit website

Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure. Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Visit website

Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork

If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing.
