"Essentials of Composition for Representational Painters"
March 16-18, 2018

For many artists, composition remains the most elusive area of their practice. Why? Because its energies are fundamentally abstract and often hidden beneath the surface of the painting. The goal of this workshop is to make the invisible visible — to discover the underlying energies that drive a composition. We will take a “real world” approach to composition by learning to work with the shapes and forces we actually see. Working from both photographs and life, with practical exercises, ongoing critiques, and analysis of master compositions, you will learn: how value differences are used to identify the shapes a composition is built upon; the essential principle of intervals; the power of the “picture window” in selection and arrangement; movement and directional energy; and how to activate negative space.

"Landscape Painting: Smart Starts Using Underpainting to Build Value, Composition and Color"
April 21-22, 2018

We invest a great deal of effort in finishing a painting, but the success of a painting hinges on a well thought out start. This workshop focuses on the critical first steps of a painting. An underpainting (or “block-in”) is a holistic method that works out issues of composition, value, and even preliminary color at the very start. This “smart start” can avoid costly mistakes and the need to rework the painting later on. On Saturday, we explore the traditional monochromatic block-in, which serves as a primer on values. On Sunday, we learn the technique for the color-block method: building the composition with color blocks based on a well-defined value study. You’ll add successive layers to each of your starts.

"The Contemporary Impressionist Landscape"
June 3-5, 2018

In many ways, Impressionism still defines the way contemporary landscape painters approach color. The Impressionists filled their paintings with brilliant color and created an entirely new coloristic metaphor for depicting natural light. In this workshop, you will learn the key to working with this “color-priority” system: that in order for the purer colors to serve as a stand-in for the luminosity of natural light, darker tonalities are rejected in favor of lighter-value colors. Strong value contrasts are replaced by color contrasts. Impressionists worked from life, but in this workshop, we will work from photographs, in the more controlled environment of the studio, where you will be able to absorb lessons at a comfortable pace. Suitable for oil, acrylic, pastel or watercolor.

This plein air painting workshop is open to all who want to capture with oil or acrylic paint the beauty that resides in everything that surrounds us: country, towns, people, things. We will start each session by spending a few minutes to take in the scene, its visual qualities as well as all other factors like the weather, the sounds, the scents and our own feelings. All senses must be engaged to achieve a successful piece. Part of the focus for this workshop will be learning how to see the world as a painter and bring out what’s inside of you: your own voice and your heart, in order to make art a vibrant part of your life.

"Plein Air: Painting the Beartooth Range, Montana"
June 25-29, 2018

Landscape painting is mostly about learning how to see; how to interpret, compare and edit the shapes and colors of the scene. We will try to see things in more of an “Abstract” way. In other words to not see literally the mountains, trees, grass, water, etc. but to see them as an interesting and beautiful arrangement of shapes and colors. This is to see them more as an artist which opens up more possibilities for things to paint and also helps us find our own voice. Students will work on what makes a plein air painting work; the mood, rhythm and movement along with an interesting and compelling arrangement of values, masses and color. Portable equipment and transportation required.

"Still Life: Structure and Variation"
July 9-13, 2018

Still life will be the starting point for exploration of pictorial structure, space and invention. This will lead us to create images in the simplest terms: a series of shapes and colors made of paint (not a beach ball or a flower). We will generate permutations of the chosen motif through reduction and analysis. As we walk the line between accuracy and abstraction, we will see through and around the meaning of things to grasp relationships between objects and space. Mediums will include graphite, charcoal, ink, acrylic or oil paint, and collage. The personal voice of each painter will come through in the diverse results. Looking at historical and contemporary still life paintings will place the practice in a larger context.

"Venetian Plaster and Acrylic Mixed Media Paintings"
July 12-15, 2018

Venetian Plaster plays well with acrylics, and here is the secret: one stays put when wet and the other can be removed. Simple, but there are many tips and tricks for combining the two. We are going to learn how to apply the plaster onto fabrics and then crackle the surface. You will learn how to create a background on panel using acrylic gels and pastes, layer color, add plaster and then start excavating. It is like a treasure hunt. I love this because it uses both sides of the creative brain. You follow the techniques, but then you intuitively layer and excavate. These techniques may be applied to any painting style.

"Abstract Acrylic Painting and the Spirit in Nature"
July 16-19, 2018

In this 4 day workshop you will practice abstract acrylic painting techniques that are connected to the spirit in nature. We will begin by identifying our spiritual and emotional connection to the four elements earth, air, fire and water. We will identify how each of these elements is sensed and perceived and then translated into abstract painting. Instruction will include demonstrations in acrylic painting techniques including painting with rust to create the patina of age, sumi ink and Stabillo pencils to create expressive mark making, handmade stenciling and printing to create patterns. The results are alive, authentic and exhilarating. Unveil the mysteries of abstraction by practicing techniques in form, rhythm and motion. Each student will receive individual instruction and group critique.

"Abstract Explorations in Acrylic Painting"
August 20-23, 2018

If the word “experimentation” causes your artistic juices to start flowing, then this is the workshop for you. Jo bases her fun filled workshop on the belief that if you approach your art with a playful attitude, you will be more apt to keep making art, and the more art you make, the better your art will be. To facilitate this attitude of experimentation and exploration, you will be creating small “practice samples” that are no larger than 10” x 10”. By working in this small manner, you will have more freedom to enjoy the process, learn the technique, and move away from your usual way of working. Jo will ignite your passion for “possibility” and rekindle your joy in the painting process.
