Transcending the Media in Painting
December 2-6, 2014 (9am-4pm) — Light is space. Color is how we see light. Paint is only a colored substance, spread on a surface. The magic of painting is turning paint into color. How do we get there? We will deal with paint, medium, and support in order to know what we can do and what we should not do - when paint is alive and when it is not. Transparency makes the color breathe, opacity gives the color body. You will see the magic of white and the beauty of black. Medium makes paint look like a jewel or a whisper. You will not be doing pretty pictures but you will see the world in a different light. Visit website

Plein Air Painting in Historic Tubac, Arizona
January 26-30, 2015 (9am-4pm) — There are many aspects to plein aire painting, but two of the most important are creating a strong, expressive design and understanding how to interpret color outdoors. The workshop will focus on developing a sense of design and rhythm, learning to take what the landscape gives you and improve upon it. Focus will also be on how to understand the thought process of mixing color outside, using colors that will give your painting the effect of light not just copying what you see. Tubac is backed up against the Santa Rita Mountains and is surrounded by cotton woods, streams and canyons. Old adobe street scenes, as well as the Tumacacori Mission, are excellent examples of its old Spanish architecture. Visit website

Landscape Painting en Plein Air
February 16-20, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Working on location, referencing nature directly, is the best and fastest way to grow as an artist. There are both philosophical and logical justifications and reinforcements to the experience we gain from working outdoors. Logically, we can construct our paintings using the Principles to design nature to the concepts that we choose to best express our ideas. Philosophically, we are attuning ourselves with what I call the spirit of nature; that unseen force which connects on a deeper level. It is intuitive, and guides us in a different way than the logical. Instructor demos, group and individual critiques and individual attention. Expect hard work and great rewards from this class. Making a Painting Work
March 9-13, 2015 (9am-4pm) — A good painting tells as much about the artist as the painting itself. Mueller will talk about the whole process of putting a painting together; from the first concept to small idea and value composition studies, the use of a color study and on to the finished painting. Students will also do direct painting without preliminary studies. The emphasis will not be on the finished piece but on the process of making a more successful painting. Remember, most paintings are ruined at the start, not at the end, as not enough preliminary thought is given to them. Students will work on counter-change, color harmony and the balance of masses and shapes in size, value and color. Visit website

Emphasizing Abstraction - Master Class Intensive
March 16-18, 2015 — The first 2 days we will be working in the studio from reproductions including older and 20th century masters, we'll move through a guided series of exercises to understand that abstraction - composition with color and shape - is THE foundation, the great engine behind all painting. Significant emphasis will also be placed on drawing interpretively from the images, as the most abstract graphic language, with part of each day spent engaged in a series of exercises using crayons and graphite to complement our examination of form with acrylic paints. On the third day, in downtown Sedona, we will focus on noticing how everyday architectural space is really extraordinary visually, and translate that awareness into drawing. Visit website

March 20-22, 2015 (9 am-4 pm Friday-Saturday, 10 am-3 pm Sunday) — Create a new, controlled impressionistic styled painting every day during this workshop. Gruppé shares his unique techniques in which he uses a palette knife and brush in a rapid wet-on-wet approach with tonal colors. A combination of impressionistic-styled, clean color and a sense of detail produce a wonderfully loose painting in either oils or acrylics. Charles Gruppé comes from a family dedicated to art for several generations. He studied at Yale, Columbia Universities and the National University of Mexico. He also painted on a Fulbright Fellowship Grant in Italy where he received the Italian Government Award. He is represented in many private and public collections and has had commissions by universities and companies. Visit charlesgruppe.com. Visit website

The Plein Air Primer: Essential Practices of the Outdoor Painter
April 18-19, 2015 (9am-4pm) — The landscape is beautiful, but it is also exceedingly large, overly complex, and highly changeable. This makes tasks like site selection, simplification and massing, and value and color control even more challenging. By exploring these concepts through guided exercises, in the relaxed and more structured environment of the studio, you will be better prepared to face them when you begin working outdoors. The workshop will cover limited focus as a means to simplify and build strong compositions, the value divisions of landscape, the proper way to plan and begin your painting, and how to approach color. We will also review the logistics of plein air: how to set up outdoors and organize a light pack of supplies. Suitable for oil, acrylic or pastel painters. Visit website

Abstract Painting: Series as a Process
May 31 - June 3, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Working in series gives your art practice focus and momentum; rather than face the blank canvas with too many possibilities to choose from, the parameters of a series create clarity of a starting point. You shed the preciousness of the individual piece, the fear of "ruining" it, which can keep you stuck. Explore multiple possibilities, try out different solutions to visual "problems", and develop confidence in uncertainty. Using acrylic paints, collage, and drawing media, we will work in multiples based on specific guidelines and examples. As the workshop progresses, you will work more independently, setting your own parameters and starting points. Most importantly you will learn the practice of working in series as a way to keep your creativity alive and thriving! Visit website

Daily presentations will be followed by painting sessions dedicated to the subject element. The Plein Air Landscape (Oil or Acrylic)
July 28-30, 2015 — The primary focus of this workshop will be painting landscapes en plein air, rain or shine. (In the case of inclement weather, we'll paint beautiful vistas from the comfort of the porch at the Gibson House.) We'll explore the entire process of creating a strong landscape painting: from building an effective composition to working with value and color and, finally, to finishing with sensitively chosen details. An emphasis will be placed on proper seeing - looking closely at the existing color and tonal relationships - and on understanding and manipulating what is seen. We will be working with the basic elements of painting, seeing them anew and in ways that can improve the craft of your painting. Visit website

Building Strong Foundations through Underpainting for Oil or Acrylic Painters
October 17-18, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Underpainting is a powerful and reliable method that works out issues of composition, placement, and value at the very start, helping you to avoid costly mistakes and the need to rework your painting later on. Many painters have tried underpainting, or what they thought was underpainting, but were unsuccessful because they did not fully understand the method. The workshop will cover the specific technique (for oil or acrylic painters) for building strong and successful underpaintings, as well as the conceptual framework behind underpainting: that the simplified value structure and simplified shapes developed in the underpainting create stronger and more enduring compositions. The technique for underpainting in oil or acrylic is slightly different, and the instructor will demonstrate in both media. Visit website

Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure. Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork
Begin your course any time — Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Visit website
