The Renaissance in Europe 1300 to 1700
February 10 - April 14, 2010 (Wednesdays, 9:30-11am) — The Renaissance began quite suddenly about 1300 with the work of Giotto, who broke with his Byzantine masters to devote himself to the concerns of man rather than the concerns of God. Giotto was a Florentine, and for several generations the Renaissance thrived in that city with Masaccio, Leonardo, and Botticelli, and then shifted to Rome, where Caravaggio, Raphael, and Michelangelo found the environment tumultuous but motivational. Later and brilliantly, the Netherlands developed great wealth triggering a Renaissance of its own, with a radical shift from the high drama of the Italian saints to an intense scrutiny of life and love in the household. The course concludes with Vermeer and a glance at his infamous forger, still the subject of bitter controversy.  Website: http://www.ringling.edu/cssp

The Van Dyke process is one of the most basic of all the silver salt emulsions — photographs are of a light brown to chocolate brown in color. This process has been called “the poor man's platinum” and rightly so, since the finished prints are beautiful! The course is offered in conjunction with the McNay Art Museum's exhibition TruthBeauty: Pictorialism and Photography as an Art, 1845–1945, and will include a Thursday evening lecture and tour of the exhibition at the McNay.  Website: http://www.swschool.org
