Beginning Plein Air Painting
September 4-6, 2014 (9am-4pm) — Learn to refine your skills in drawing, observing value, and applying color as you paint in the field. Together with Stuart, select an effective composition and then organize and simplify its shapes through averaging the colors. The goal of the workshop is to learn methods to successfully paint in an environment of changing light rather than to create finished paintings. Each day begins with a demonstration and discussion, followed by work in the field and individual coaching from Stuart. First paint small black-and-white value studies, then move to color studies up to 9" x 12" size. As the light changes and fluctuates, you will begin a new canvas. Landscape Photography: The Way of the Land
September 12-14, 2014 (9am-4pm) — This workshop in landscape photography will invite the interpretation of both natural and man-made landscapes. One of photography's classic themes, landscape photography can reveal much about how both time and memory can cultivate a 'sense of place'. We'll examine how the 'grace of line', can weave together 'disparate elements' to provide meaning in a landscape photograph. In addition, the role of 'light' and the notion of 'quiet beauty' will be considered. And the psychology of color will be discussed though black & white imagery will also be welcomed during the workshop. Local field trips will provide opportunities to explore approaches and methods covered in class. And finally, time will be spent evaluating previous student work along with imagery taken during the workshop. Visit website

Landscape Painting
October 6-8, 2014 (9am-4pm) — In this three day workshop, we will investigate the process of landscape painting, both in the studio and en plain air. Painting directly from observation is a difficult task at best, and many students struggle to process the overwhelming amount of information when faced with the great outdoors. Sound familiar? By breaking down the process into smaller, manageable problems, solutions present themselves. We will work on finding logical ways to solve problems of design, value structure, color, and edges, through demos and exercises. Visit website

David Lussier's Taos New Mexico Plein air Workshop
October 6-10, 2014 (9:00 - 4:00) — This is a 5-day outdoor oil painting workshop. We will paint in Taos and also some of the surrounding towns. We are looking forward to teaching and painting in this beautiful location and I hope you will be able to join us. We strive to teach the building blocks of landscape painting while nurturing each person's individual style and personality. Every good landscape painting is rooted in sound painting principles and the truth that we find in nature. In order for a painting to be of personal expression, the artist must infuse it with his or her own imagination, personality and inventiveness. We work with each student toward this goal. From Source to Studio
November 1-6, 2014 — This workshop is designed to embrace the dialogue between plein air work and studio work. We will endeavor to put plein air painting back in its rightful context, i.e. that plein air painting is, more than anything else, about "learning to see" and being a dedicated student of nature. It is about being an effective "hunter gatherer" and harvesting information and ideas; it is the beginning not the end of a process. Then we will explore the notion that the studio is an extension of the work we do outdoors; it is where we explore, edit, experiment and refine ideas. I will demonstrate how you can keep your studio work fresh and impactful. There will be group critiques, discussions, and demos throughout. Visit website

The instructor will encourage students to paint along with him and take a painting from start to finish. Throughout this fun and non-intimidating class, the fundamentals of good painting will be emphasized. There will be step-by-step demonstrations. Plein Air Painting in Historic Tubac, Arizona
January 26-30, 2015 (9am-4pm) — There are many aspects to plein aire painting, but two of the most important are creating a strong, expressive design and understanding how to interpret color outdoors. The workshop will focus on developing a sense of design and rhythm, learning to take what the landscape gives you and improve upon it. Focus will also be on how to understand the thought process of mixing color outside, using colors that will give your painting the effect of light not just copying what you see. Tubac is backed up against the Santa Rita Mountains and is surrounded by cotton woods, streams and canyons. Old adobe street scenes, as well as the Tumacacori Mission, are excellent examples of its old Spanish architecture. Visit website

The Value of Watercolor
February 3-7, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Andy's workshop will concentrate on getting students to see the large shapes vital to a strong composition. The focus will be on connecting shapes of similar value to help students paint bold, loose watercolors. Andy will complete at least one demo painting per day, and will cover how to handle several topics from skies, trees, water and reflections to buildings, cars and figures. Students will be asked to work on small value studies from the beginning, gradually working toward making the transition to larger color paintings. There will also be discussion and practice on drawing skills, which are extremely important in watercolor. "Drawing and Painting in Plein Air and the Studio"
February 7-14, 2015 (all day) — This workshop will be an intensively rewarding and meaningful experience of study and painting with Master Artist John MacDonald. This class will take participants through the entire process of creating strong landscape paintings: from building effective compositions to working tonality, color and finishing with sensitively chosen details. Following a traditional 19th century painting process focusing on the landscape, participants will hone their observational skills while coming to a clearer understanding of how a successful landscape painting is structured. Emphasis is placed on proper seeing--looking closely at the existing color and tonal relationships--and then onto understanding and manipulating what is seen. Landscape Painting en Plein Air
February 16-20, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Working on location, referencing nature directly, is the best and fastest way to grow as an artist. There are both philosophical and logical justifications and reinforcements to the experience we gain from working outdoors. Logically, we can construct our paintings using the Principles to design nature to the concepts that we choose to best express our ideas. Philosophically, we are attuning ourselves with what I call the spirit of nature; that unseen force which connects on a deeper level. It is intuitive, and guides us in a different way than the logical. Instructor demos, group and individual critiques and individual attention. Expect hard work and great rewards from this class. Plein Air Extreme to Studio
February 23-26, 2015 (9am-4pm) — This workshop will be about efficiency in collecting field sketches and converting them to studio paintings. It will be imperative to pare down your outdoor gear to hike to some spots that are further out, but worth it. We will be catching those moments in the day that make the Sonoran Desert the worthwhile subject matter it is to paint. There are also specific exercises designed to help you see and capture the essence of your scene. Back in the studio, we'll be combining our fresh field sketches and information from our cameras to produce paintings where all aspects of this process will be condensed and consolidated; color, design, drawing and personal expression. This will be a productive workshop. Visit website
