From Source to Studio
November 1-6, 2014 — This workshop is designed to embrace the dialogue between plein air work and studio work. We will endeavor to put plein air painting back in its rightful context, i.e. that plein air painting is, more than anything else, about "learning to see" and being a dedicated student of nature. It is about being an effective "hunter gatherer" and harvesting information and ideas; it is the beginning not the end of a process. Then we will explore the notion that the studio is an extension of the work we do outdoors; it is where we explore, edit, experiment and refine ideas. I will demonstrate how you can keep your studio work fresh and impactful. There will be group critiques, discussions, and demos throughout. Visit website

Painting Landscapes from Photos
January 6-8, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Even if you prefer painting landscapes in plein aire, at some point you are going to use photographs as a reference, perhaps for the shape of a tree, the light on a canyon wall or the perfect color of a field of flowers. The instructor will encourage students to paint along with him and take a painting from start to finish. Throughout this fun and non-intimidating class, the fundamentals of good painting will be emphasized. There will be step-by-step demonstrations. Plein Air Painting in Historic Tubac, Arizona
January 26-30, 2015 (9am-4pm) — There are many aspects to plein aire painting, but two of the most important are creating a strong, expressive design and understanding how to interpret color outdoors. Focus will also be on how to understand the thought process of mixing color outside, using colors that will give your painting the effect of light not just copying what you see. "Drawing and Painting in Plein Air and the Studio"
February 7-14, 2015 (all day) — This workshop will be an intensively rewarding and meaningful experience of study and painting with Master Artist John MacDonald. This class will take participants through the entire process of creating strong landscape paintings: from building effective compositions to working tonality, color and finishing with sensitively chosen details. Following a traditional 19th century painting process focusing on the landscape, participants will hone their observational skills while coming to a clearer understanding of how a successful landscape painting is structured. Emphasis is placed on proper seeing--looking closely at the existing color and tonal relationships--and then onto understanding and manipulating what is seen. Spend a week relaxing in the tropics, learning and having fun with one of the great contemporary painting masters. Visit website

Landscape Painting en Plein Air
February 16-20, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Working on location, referencing nature directly, is the best and fastest way to grow as an artist. There are both philosophical and logical justifications and reinforcements to the experience we gain from working outdoors. Logically, we can construct our paintings using the Principles to design nature to the concepts that we choose to best express our ideas. Philosophically, we are attuning ourselves with what I call the spirit of nature; that unseen force which connects on a deeper level. It is intuitive, and guides us in a different way than the logical. Instructor demos, group and individual critiques and individual attention. Expect hard work and great rewards from this class. Watercolor Painting Workshop with Keiko Tanabe
April 7-17, 2015 — Japan, exotic, traditional, with wondrous sights, aromas and surprises. Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan for over 1,000 years, has numerous temples, gardens, and streets of historical significance. We are planning a 10 day painting trip to Kyoto, hopefully when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. We will visit cultural sites and take you to the famous street of the geishas. They will surely yield many painting opportunities and inspirations. We will also take a trip to the unusual, small, harbor village of Ine, where picturesque landscape/waterscapes will be ready for us to paint. We also may have time to visit Miyama. Both are among the most beautiful villages of Japan. Miyama has many traditional, thatched-roof houses surrounded by rural landscapes. Visit website

Painting Landscapes from Photos
April 10-12, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Even if you prefer painting landscapes in plein aire, at some point you are going to use photographs as a reference, perhaps for the shape of a tree, the light on a canyon wall or the perfect color of a field of flowers. Painting Outdoors in San Diego, California
April 15-18, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Painting outdoors is challenging. Learning what to select and what to omit to make a strong design and statement is the goal. We are not obligated to paint everything as it is. Emphasis will be to simplify and organize shapes. Beginning with a simple statement, we capture the shapes, values and light source quickly and from there we will work toward a finished work. Demonstrations supplemented with visual aids will help to clarify the key elements discussed. What is important to Budicin, is to share whatever knowledge he has with students and give each student all he can through personal attention, direction and group discussions. The Plein Air Primer: Essential Practices of the Outdoor Painter
April 18-19, 2015 (9am-4pm) — The landscape is beautiful, but it is also exceedingly large, overly complex, and highly changeable. This makes tasks like site selection, simplification and massing, and value and color control even more challenging. By exploring these concepts through guided exercises, in the relaxed and more structured environment of the studio, you will be better prepared to face them when you begin working outdoors. The workshop will cover limited focus as a means to simplify and build strong compositions, the value divisions of landscape, the proper way to plan and begin your painting, and how to approach color. We will also review the logistics of plein air: how to set up outdoors and organize a light pack of supplies. Suitable for oil, acrylic or pastel painters. Visit website

The mornings will be spent capturing dramatic sunrises, photogenic coastlines, a lighthouse, harbors, bays, beautiful madrones, and one or two gardens. During the afternoon, we'll direct our attention to the classroom where we'll discuss the basic tenets of photography that include light, color, form, and expression. During the instructional session, time will be spent working on your compositions and critiquing your daily work - then it's back out for an evening session in the field. This workshop will inspire your creative vision and enhance your technical abilities as you photograph the beautiful island coast. All levels welcome. Visit website

The Maine Landscape: Master Class
September 28 - October 2, 2015 — We are going to work together on making stronger and more personal paintings. Colin will talk about ways to build upon a good foundation of painting skills, and ways to bring those skills to more meaningful paintings. A good painting has to be well put together, but also have content that engages the viewer. We will split our time between discussion of painting ideas, studying other artists, time at the easel, and critiques. We will talk about all of the aspects of making art and how to grow as an artist. This class is not intended to teach the basics of oil painting, but is meant to help an artist develop and grow, and make their paintings stronger. Visit website

Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork
Begin your course any time — Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing. Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure. Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Visit website
