"Painting en Plein Air with Intention: 100 Strokes or Less"
June 27-30, 2017

Discover an innovative approach to plein air painting that encourages you to be thoughtful, yet direct as you create a painting, from start to finish, in 100 strokes or less. With no opportunity to rework, this method helps you to form a clear intention with each piece. You will learn to capture the spirit of your surroundings quickly and with a limited palette. The first two days of this workshop will be devoted to completing quick studies. Deliberately counting each stroke, whether the mark is small or stretches across the entire canvas and back, these studies will provide you with practice in your decision-making process. The following two days will be spent on location applying the same methods while working on more developed, final pieces.

July 8-9, 2017

Using his instructional brochure "Wild Ink" as your guide, Hal Dean will guide you through his 10 steps for sketching the environment in ink. Each step builds on techniques to develop drawing and composition skills to create a sketch. The idea behind ‘sketch drawing’ is to develop three dimensional views of what you see or are thinking. Unlike a photograph, street sketching recaptures the entire sensorial experience. We are all artists! Drawing is a craft, and like any craft, its finesse is directly proportional to how much attention is paid toward technique and practice.

Field locations: Swan Island Dahlias & Portland Japanese Garden. These two locations, though drastically different offer some of the best possible experience for both landscape and close up photography. Here we will learn to take our time, look, see and take in the beauty all around us, and “work the subject” to come away with nothing less than amazing, almost surreal images. If you own a macro lens, certainly bring it. However, great close up images are available with all lenses available. Great images can be made with telephoto lenses. September 9-12, 2017

During this comprehensive landscape class both plein air and studio painting will be thoroughly discussed. Often, work created in the studio lacks the energy of paintings created outdoors from direct observation. However, time constraints generally limit the design, finish, and size of a plein air piece. The focus of this class will be the process of taking information from both life studies and photographs and combining them into authentic, fully realized, studio paintings - bringing the best of both worlds together. TJ will give daily demonstrations and individual attention to each student over this four day workshop. We will spend most of the time outdoors painting Whidbey Island barns en plein air then finish the paintings in the studio.

"Beyond Mud – Techniques of Working Wet-Into-Wet with Oil"
October 28-29, 2017

Every oil painter, at one time or another, has experienced the frustration of working in oil. We love its buttery consistency and blend-ability, but those are the same qualities that can lead to overworking and “mud.” Keeping your colors fresh and clear is not something that happens by accident – it’s a practice that involves a series of technical maneuvers that you must learn to apply with every stroke. This workshop covers everything you need to start improving your wet-into-wet practice: layering order and the principle of “thin … thicker … thickest”, paint consistency, transparency and opacity, pressure and touch, and the right kinds of brushes to use. You’ll practice several techniques and then do a painting of your own choosing, under Mitchell’s guidance.

"Exploring the Light of Tonalism"
November 18-19, 2017

A tonalist landscape painting typically portrays a twilight sky setting behind hills, meadows and trees, filling the painting with solitude and peaceful warmth. Some have even said that Tonalism carries the fragrance of the spiritual dimension. Tonalism began in 1880’s with the explorations of George Inness, James McNeil Whistler and others. In this workshop you will learn how to create a tonalist color palette, and how to simplify your compositional structure. In a friendly and nonjudgemental classroom environment there will be a balance of structured lessons with a flexibility that accommodates the natural pace and expression of each student. Although tonalism originated with landscape painting, you will also learn how it can be applied to still life and urban subjects.

There will be extensive studies on color temperature and value that will make the students’ paintings “sing” and vibrate with evocative color. "Painting in Spain: Pastel Workshop"
April 30 - May 7, 2018

Painting “en plein air” means being fully present to the experience of painting on location. As you observe and paint, every sight, sound, smell, and experience in the environment becomes part of your painting. That’s part of the joy that comes with working from life rather than a photo. We’ll go through the process of creating on location step-by-step, from choosing what you’re going to paint, to simplifying the scene, to drawing up a thumbnail, to blocking in the big shapes, and then to adding detail. We’ll go over the importance of understanding values and how this knowledge can liberate your colour choices and interpretation of a scene. The workshop is suitable for all levels but some experience with drawing and pastels would be helpful.

"Painting in Provence: Travel Sketching in Watercolor"

In our week together I'll teach you techniques for capturing the close-up and colourful in villages and towns, as well as the distant and scenic in French landscapes. We'll sketch iconic market scenes, fields of lavender in bloom, hillside towns and panoramas. In true travel sketching tradition, we'll pack light — carrying a small bag for art materials and a folding stool. This workshop is designed to give you confidence sketching wherever you are. We'll work spontaneously, and I'll show you how to keep your watercolour sketches fresh and colourful.

"Plein Air Flower Painting"
August 9-11, 2018

This workshop will consist of plein air in some of Whidbey Island's beautiful gardens, and also one or two studio days. I will show you how to simplify a flower scene. I will demo in the morning, and the students will paint in the afternoon. On the second day we will return to the site and I will demo on how to finish a painting. The students will either work on the same painting or start a new one, whichever they prefer. For the studio day, I will again demo, with the focus on how to design a floral still life that has a fresh and natural look with lots of movement. The students then will set up their own still lifes.

Although students are encouraged to work in whatever medium they prefer, Rae will be demonstrating her techniques in pastels and some watercolor; however she will give ‘at easel’ instruction in the medium of the individual’s choice. A painter of many genres, Rae’s style is loose and free in whatever media she chooses.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan"
Begin your course any time

Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork"
Begin your course any time

Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music"
Begin your course any time

In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting.
