Etruscan Places Elements of Landscape
September 5-12, 2015 — The inspiration for this course is the writing of 18th century French painter P. H. Valenciennes. "Elements" is organized around morning slide shows focusing on one element of landscape: fields, trees, clouds and skies, water, time and nocturnes. Daily presentations will be followed by painting sessions dedicated to the subject element. No formal technical instruction is offered but two instructors will be available to work with participants individually. Daily reviews of work. Fees include most materials, surfaces, equipment, all meals, accommodation, field trips, local transportation. 12 student maximum. Visit website

Night Light: Capture to Print
September 6-11, 2015 — Northern New Mexico is blessedly bereft of the light pollution that plagues so much of the developed world. Here, the Milky Way is brilliantly illuminated against a velvet black sky. This ideal location, combined with cameras that can see in the dark, make it practically effortless to create unique landscape imagery all throughout the night. Marc has timed this workshop to correspond with a Balsamic Moon, which occurs when the moon is 45 degrees or less behind the sun. We spend three nights at the charming Abiquiú Inn, surrounded with the striking geography that Georgia O'Keeffe captured in her paintings. We then spend two days at the digital lab, where you learn how to process night shots using Adobe Lightroom. Visit website

Painting Plein Air will give students a firsthand view of Colley's approach to working outdoors in nature. Properties of Painting Water
September 28 - October 2, 2015 — In this class we will be closely examining the reflective and transparent qualities of water and how to achieve that feeling of movement in a painting. The movement of water is elusive to most painters, whether it's falling from rocks or rolling onto a beach there is an understandable way to approach it. We will be working from sketches and photos to understand and depict the true look of water movement. While we will make water the centerpiece for this workshop we will be painting everything that interacts with it. Trees, sky, rocks and figure will all be discussed and painted. Impressions of Tuscany en Plein Aire
October 10-17, 2015 — Rich's workshops are designed to teach the beginning plein aire painter to create impactful compositions by selecting dynamic shapes that work well together. The student will learn to accurately identify value and color, to guide the viewer's eye through a painting with the use of temperature shifts, textural variety, and effective edge treatment, as well as proper paint application. Rich's enthusiastic but patient teaching style is just right for those with little experience venturing outside to paint. For the more advanced student, Rich will help raise the level of their work by introducing them to new ideas about color use, shape containment, the psychology involved in viewing a painting, and the effective use of the these principles. The Art and Science of Landscape Photography
October 12-16, 2015 — A good landscape photographer has the brain of an engineer and the heart of a hopeless romantic. We start with the craft, which for a landscape photographer goes far beyond understanding photographic basics like aperture and shutter speed. It also includes the ability to locate promising subjects using topographic maps and computerized mapping tools, and having a working knowledge of atmospheric optics. Mastering the craft includes understanding how human vision affects the way we see the world and the way we view art. One of the fundamental problems for landscape photographers is finding the best way to compress the broad range of tones we see in the real world into the much narrower range of tones we can reproduce in a photographic print. Landscape Painting from Start to Finish: Creating Atmosphere, Space and Light
October 23-25, 2015 (9am-4pm) — The sky is an ocean of atmosphere many miles deep, a transparent sea of air. Plein Air Painting in Historic Tubac, Arizona
January 25-29, 2016 (9am-4pm) — There are many aspects to plein air painting, but two of the most important are creating a strong, expressive design and understanding how to interpret color outdoors. Focus will also be on how to understand the thought process of mixing color outside, using colors that will give the painting the effect of light not just copying what the student sees. Students will also work on understanding the painting process in the studio and the importance of setting and achieving goals in their work. Portable easel and transportation required.
