Watercolor Painting Workshop with Keiko Tanabe

Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan for over 1,000 years, has numerous temples, gardens, and streets of historical significance. We are planning a 10 day painting trip to Kyoto, hopefully when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. We will visit cultural sites and take you to the famous street of the geishas. They will surely yield many painting opportunities and inspirations. We will also take a trip to the unusual, small, harbor village of Ine, where picturesque landscape/waterscapes will be ready for us to paint. We also may have time to visit Miyama. Painting Landscapes from Photos
April 10-12, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Even if you prefer painting landscapes in plein aire, at some point you are going to use photographs as a reference, perhaps for the shape of a tree, the light on a canyon wall or the perfect color of a field of flowers. Painting Outdoors in San Diego, California
April 15-18, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Painting outdoors is challenging. Learning what to select and what to omit to make a strong design and statement is the goal. We are not obligated to paint everything as it is. Emphasis will be to simplify and organize shapes. Beginning with a simple statement, we capture the shapes, values and light source quickly and from there we will work toward a finished work. Demonstrations supplemented with visual aids will help to clarify the key elements discussed. What is important to Budicin, is to share whatever knowledge he has with students and give each student all he can through personal attention, direction and group discussions. The Plein Air Primer: Essential Practices of the Outdoor Painter
April 18-19, 2015 (9am-4pm) — The landscape is beautiful, but it is also exceedingly large, overly complex, and highly changeable. This makes tasks like site selection, simplification and massing, and value and color control even more challenging. By exploring these concepts through guided exercises, in the relaxed and more structured environment of the studio, you will be better prepared to face them when you begin working outdoors. The workshop will cover limited focus as a means to simplify and build strong compositions, the value divisions of landscape, the proper way to plan and begin your painting, and how to approach color. We will also review the logistics of plein air: how to set up outdoors and organize a light pack of supplies. Suitable for oil, acrylic or pastel painters. Visit website

The Art and Science of Landscape Photography
April 20-24, 2015 — A good landscape photographer has the brain of an engineer and the heart of a hopeless romantic. We start with the craft, which for a landscape photographer goes far beyond understanding photographic basics like aperture and shutter speed. It also includes the ability to locate promising subjects using topographic maps and computerized mapping tools, and having a working knowledge of atmospheric optics. Mastering the craft includes understanding how human vision affects the way we see the world and the way we view art. One of the fundamental problems for landscape photographers is finding the best way to compress the broad range of tones we see in the real world into the much narrower range of tones we can reproduce in a photographic print. Landscape Painting with Michael Workman
April 20-24, 2015 (9 am - 4 pm) — For Michael Workman, the act of painting usually starts with an emotional response to the landscape and is ultimately completed by the viewers through their emotional responses to the painting. The Modern Landscape
April 29 - May 1, 2015 — This photography workshop is for all levels. In this fresh new course, The Modern Landscape, students will be challenged to remove the clutter, the obvious and the cliche from their landscapes to create memorable images with a distinct visual voice. By using negative space, scale and a restrained color palette, the modern landscape abstracts the obvious, subtracts the unnecessary and leaves behind the scene in only its purest form. Sedona has long been an artist's paradise. The canyons and red sandstone rock formations have been photographed time and time again. This class will inspire working landscape photographers, as well as those new to the field to create distinctive imagery that embraces the minimal while transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. The Francese Watercolor Workshop consists of five days of classroom instruction. That classroom may be inside of a building, at a streams edge or on a city street. Watercolor Energies and Composition
June 29 - July 2, 2015 — Frank Webb is one of the nation's premier watercolor teachers and brings enthusiasm and energy to his classes, making painting an exhilarating enterprise. "My work proceeds from on-the-spot graphite drawings made from a lifetime of travels. Each drawing is edited, fused with design principles, and used as the model. With large flat brushes and plenty of water I approach the paper in a slam-bang initial wash, and end with the caress of a butterfly wing." Visit website

The Art of Landscape Painting
June 30 - July 2, 2015 — This workshop is suitable for beginners, intermediates, and advanced students who work with oils, acrylics, or pastels and wish to master the challenges of painting the landscape. Beautiful as they may be, landscapes are often expansive, complex and constantly changing. This makes tasks like massing, simplification, color, and lighting very challenging for the painter. Each day we will focus on a different aspect of landscape painting to learn proportion, light, energy, value, and color. There will be a short lecture each morning. The rest of the day will be spent outdoors creating a new painting. The small size of the class will allow for plenty of individual attention. Peter is a teaching faculty member of the Truro Center for the Arts. Visit website
