Landscape Painting/Observation and Concept
July 19-21, 2016 — The purpose of this class is multifold: to paint from the landscape as a means of investigating exterior space, color and light; to incorporate into these paintings your comprehensive understanding of art historical styles; and to develop a contemporaneous manner in utilizing the landscape motif within your own work. We will go out to paint for the three hours of class with the purpose to better visualize color, light and space in this short time. This will lead to a richer understanding of color interaction that can benefit successive paintings that you do on your own. The Plein Air Landscape (Oil or Acrylic)
August 23-25, 2016 — The primary focus of this workshop will be painting landscapes en plein air, rain or shine. (In the case of inclement weather, we'll paint beautiful vistas from the comfort of the porch at the Gibson House.) We'll explore the entire process of creating a strong landscape painting: from building an effective composition to working with value and color and, finally, to finishing with sensitively chosen details. An emphasis will be placed on proper seeing - looking closely at the existing color and tonal relationships - and on understanding and manipulating what is seen. We will be working with the basic elements of painting, seeing them anew and in ways that can improve the craft of your painting. Visit website

Painting with Pastels in Tuscany!
September 17-24, 2016 — More than other mediums, a pastel in the hand can bridge the gap between left and right brain involvement in the creative process. They are immediate, direct and tactile, require no delay or premeditation for mixing, and can be used both for intuitive quick drawing as well as for more strategically planned work. The same stick can be used to apply the pastel in many ways, the broad side to quickly cover wide areas, the edges for lines and smaller shapes, the tip for texture or detail. The workshop is suitable for beginners, intermediate or advanced students, as well as people working in other mediums who might enjoy playing with the mark-making potential of the pastel.
