Plein Air with Mark Boedges
February 13-17, 2017 (9am-4pm) — "When I paint I am trying to tell the truth about my subject. Every time I put brush to canvas I am trying to find what is essential about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an authentic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my subject on that day and at that time -everything else in my painting flows from this." This workshop will focus primarily on giving students the tools to render authentic light by carefully using correct values and rigorously maintaining color temperature relationships between light and shadow. Building Landscape Harmony with Color Strategies, Limited Palettes and Color Groups
May 6 & 7, 2017 (9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) — Landscape is an endless source of color inspiration, yet successful landscape painting is only partially about referencing the colors we see in nature. More often than not, a successful depiction of landscape light is based on the implementation of a color strategy or “color plan.” Although we will reference photos in this workshop, we never copy photographic color; instead, we learn to build color harmony by becoming color strategists and inventors. You can work with your own photographs or work with those provided by the instructor. Gardens of Portland
August 26-27, 2017 (9am-4pm) — Field locations: Swan Island Dahlias & Portland Japanese Garden. These two locations, though drastically different offer some of the best possible experience for both landscape and close up photography. This is certainly not the Grand Canyon, or Death Valley National Park, where the expanse is the order of the day. Here we will learn to take our time, look, see and take in the beauty all around us, and “work the subject” to come away with nothing less than amazing, almost surreal images. If you own a macro lens, certainly bring it. However, great close up images are available with all lenses available. Great images can be made with telephoto lenses. I strongly suggest using a tripod. Painting Barns and Buildings on Whidbey Island with TJ Cunningham
September 9-12, 2017 — During this comprehensive landscape class both plein air and studio painting will be thoroughly discussed. Often, work created in the studio lacks the energy of paintings created outdoors from direct observation. However, time constraints generally limit the design, finish, and size of a plein air piece. The focus of this class will be the process of taking information from both life studies and photographs and combining them into authentic, fully realized, studio paintings - bringing the best of both worlds together. TJ will give daily demonstrations and individual attention to each student over this four day workshop. No formal technical instruction is offered but two instructors will be available to work with participants individually. Daily reviews of work. Beyond Mud – Techniques of Working Wet-Into-Wet with Oil
October 28-29, 2017 — Every oil painter, at one time or another, has experienced the frustration of working in oil. We love its buttery consistency and blend-ability, but those are the same qualities that can lead to overworking and “mud.” Keeping your colors fresh and clear is not something that happens by accident – it’s a practice that involves a series of technical maneuvers that you must learn to apply with every stroke. This workshop covers everything you need to start improving your wet-into-wet practice: layering order and the principle of “thin … thicker … thickest”, paint consistency, transparency and opacity, pressure and touch, and the right kinds of brushes to use. You’ll practice several techniques and then do a painting of your own choosing, under Mitchell’s guidance. Visit website

Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure.
