Landscape Painting/Observation and Concept
August 11-13, 2015 — The purpose of this class is multifold: to paint from the landscape as a means of investigating exterior space, color and light; to incorporate into these paintings your comprehensive understanding of art historical styles; and to develop a contemporaneous manner in utilizing the landscape motif within your own work. We will go out to paint for the three hours of class with the purpose to better visualize color, light and space in this short time. This will lead to a richer understanding of color interaction that can benefit successive paintings that you do on your own. I will begin with a demonstration and end with a short critique in order to get the necessary feedback and to establish a better student/instructor understanding. Visit website

Painting and Exhibiting in beautiful Costa Rica
August 18-27, 2015 — With the beautiful settings of Costa Rica's marine and volcano sites, I share my experience with oil paint and how it allows me to grasp a moment of light and atmospheric effects, something painters go after since Turner and Monet. This 9 day workshop covers theory of design and composition, tonal maps, the application of the medium, drawing, basic perspective, light and color to paint scenes with value control and chromatic harmony. I give demonstrations (including palette knife technique) with oil (and other mediums as requested), although this workshop is mainly for oil painters, I believe that the medium is only the vehicle to send a message, so instead of focusing on the medium I give the foundations I was given to paint anything! The Architecture of Light!

In this five day workshop, painting indoors and out, Tom will demonstrate the fundamental and crucially important, identification of strong compositional subjects. No amount of technical expertise or finesse evident in a final painting can compensate for a composition lacking in strength and clarity of a strong idea and solid value organization. Properties of Painting Water
September 28 - October 2, 2015 — In this class we will be closely examining the reflective and transparent qualities of water and how to achieve that feeling of movement in a painting. The movement of water is elusive to most painters, whether it's falling from rocks or rolling onto a beach there is an understandable way to approach it. We will be working from sketches and photos to understand and depict the true look of water movement. While we will make water the centerpiece for this workshop we will be painting everything that interacts with it. Trees, sky, rocks and figure will all be discussed and painted. John has developed an effective syllabus for the week, and will tailor the class to individual levels and needs. Visit website

Landscape Painting from Start to Finish: Creating Atmosphere, Space and Light
October 23-25, 2015 (9am-4pm) — The sky is an ocean of atmosphere many miles deep, a transparent sea of air. As we look out into the vista, we may not be conscious of actually seeing the air but we plainly see its effects on the landscape. When painters began to go outside and use natural lighting, we found that nature's value scale was immeasurably beyond our own puny value scale. Learn how to make a true representation of any scene in nature using "relative" rather than "absolute" or actual values and color relationships. Expect concept lectures, demonstration and individual instruction as Doug winds you through the myriad of knowledge needed for you to develop your skills for painting beautiful and believable space. You will be paintings from photos. Visit website
