Plein Air with Mark Boedges
February 13-17, 2017 (9am-4pm) — "When I paint I am trying to tell the truth about my subject. Every time I put brush to canvas I am trying to find what is essential about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an authentic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my subject on that day and at that time -everything else in my painting flows from this." This workshop will focus primarily on giving students the tools to render authentic light by carefully using correct values and rigorously maintaining color temperature relationships between light and shadow. “Painting Landscape” Plein Air Workshop
March 15-18, 2017 (9am - 4pm) — Paint PleinAir with nationally recognized and award-winning artist Mark Boedges. "Given the priority of authentic light in my work, it is this element that I like to focus on during the three-day workshop. As such, we will focus on value and color temperature relationships above all else. There is no question that good drawing is paramount to our effort since nothing wrecks a painting faster than drawing errors. But I typically tell students that no one needs to spend good money to have me tell them to measure harder. Our time is better spent on the more difficult and crucial concepts of value and color temperature. Elements such appropriate edges, surface texture, composition, and others will also be discussed." Building Landscape Harmony with Color Strategies, Limited Palettes and Color Groups
May 6 & 7, 2017 (9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) — Landscape is an endless source of color inspiration, yet successful landscape painting is only partially about referencing the colors we see in nature. More often than not, a successful depiction of landscape light is based on the implementation of a color strategy or “color plan.” Although we will reference photos in this workshop, we never copy photographic color; instead, we learn to build color harmony by becoming color strategists and inventors. You can work with your own photographs or work with those provided by the instructor. This is not a class for first-time painters; however, it is ideally suited for plein air or studio landscape painters who want to expand their color vocabulary. Visit website

Elements of Landscape
June 17-24, 2017 (All Day) — The inspiration for this course is the writing of 18th century French painter P. H. Valenciennes. Daily presentations will be followed by painting sessions dedicated to the subject element. No formal technical instruction is offered but two instructors will be available to work with participants individually. Daily reviews of work. Painting in Spain: Watercolor Sketching Workshop
June 19-26, 2017 — Join us for a week of sketching with watercolor as we explore the breathtakingly beautiful landscape and architecturally unique villages of the Costa Brava. As a practicing architect, architectural illustrator and watercolor painter, I am passionate about travel sketching and painting, and love to share that passion with others. It does not matter if you have never sketched or painted (or think you can do neither) since I believe everyone can do this with just a little coaxing and coaching. The focus will be on individual expression and exploration. There is nothing that anchors memories (the view; the feel of the sun; the sounds; the smells; the immediacy of the moment) quite like the act of sketching and painting on location. Visit website

June 26-30, 2017 (9:30am-4pm with 1/2 hour break) — Designed for those who would like to gain a better understanding of methods and techniques to create paintings with strong impact. Painting en Plein Air with Intention: 100 Strokes or Less
June 27-30, 2017 (9am-4pm) — Discover an innovative approach to plein air painting that encourages you to be thoughtful, yet direct as you create a painting, from start to finish, in 100 strokes or less. Shape-Shifting: Abstracting Nature in Watermedia
July 19-22, 2017 (9am-4pm) — In this workshop, you will examine the natural world through the lens of abstraction. Focusing on the relationships of color and shape within the landscape, instead of individual objects, will lead you to practical solutions in shifting your painting practice toward more innovative avenues of expression. Using design principles as the underpinning of each composition, you will work from sketches and photo references. In addition to sharing technical strategies in watermedia, Dale will demonstrate how to use subjects as a source for abstraction by simplifying images and breaking them down to their core visual elements. This workshop will consist of demonstrations, slide lectures, individual instruction, and group critiques. Visit website

Sense of Place
July 24-26, 2017 (9am-4pm) — Moving beyond the traditional rectangular, flat sheet of paper, this workshop investigates the relationship between experiences in the landscape and representing those experiences in the studio. With consideration for the viewer’s interaction, create works that encompass space, tactility, and personal content. Through demonstrations, readings, and lectures, you will be introduced to the idea of creating a sense of place through materials and forms. Emphasis will be placed on the ‘production’ of work. This workshop is more of an exploration of a process or way of approaching the creation of work than a tutorial on how to paint or draw. Using found materials, as well as photographs, paintings, and drawings, students will create a unique document that expresses their understanding of a place. Visit website
