"Beyond Mud – Techniques of Working Wet-Into-Wet with Oil"
October 28-29, 2017

Every oil painter, at one time or another, has experienced the frustration of working in oil. We love its buttery consistency and blend-ability, but those are the same qualities that can lead to overworking and “mud.” Keeping your colors fresh and clear is not something that happens by accident – it’s a practice that involves a series of technical maneuvers that you must learn to apply with every stroke. This workshop covers everything you need to start improving your wet-into-wet practice: layering order and the principle of “thin … thicker … thickest”, paint consistency, transparency and opacity, pressure and touch, and the right kinds of brushes to use. You’ll practice several techniques and then do a painting of your own choosing, under Mitchell’s guidance.

In this workshop you will learn how to create a tonalist color palette, and how to simplify your compositional structure. In a friendly and nonjudgemental classroom environment there will be a balance of structured lessons with a flexibility that accommodates the natural pace and expression of each student. "Plein Air with Mark Boedges"
February 19-23, 2018

“When I paint I am trying to tell the truth about my subject. Every time I put brush to canvas I am trying to find what is essential about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an authentic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my subject on that day and at that time-everything else in my painting flows from this.” This workshop will focus primarily on giving students the tools to render authentic light by carefully using correct values and rigorously maintaining color temperature relationships between light and shadow.

"Painting the Old West: Tubac, Arizona"
February 19-23, 2018

Phil Starke’s focus will be helping students simplify the plein air subject and mix colors that suggest light not detail. Two of the most important aspects to plein air painting are creating a strong, expressive design and understanding how to interpret color outdoors. While staying at the Tubac Golf Resort, a restored 1800’s ranch, students will be near the Santa Rita Mountains on the Santa Cruz River. The historic village of Tubac provides old adobe buildings and street scenes to paint. Nearby, students will paint the beautiful Spanish Church built in 1828. I began my art journey travelling, just me and my dog. I was in the woods every day and I had a dirtbike which I'd ride to remote places to paint and be inspired by nature. I've been working in Oils for about 25 years. Today I'm a nationally recognized artist. I've been featured in numerous magazines and I get invited to several national events each year. I've won some meaningful awards along the way. The real reason I paint though, is simply because I love it. My workshop in Wimberley is with an All Inclusive structure. One price takes care of tuition, lodging (4 nights), meals and wine. We just paint and learn in Texas' beautiful Hill Country.

"Plein Air Sketch and Quick Studies to Studio"
March 19-22, 2018

This workshop will be about efficiency in collecting field sketches and converting them to studio paintings. Students will be catching those moments in the day that make the Sonoran Desert the worthwhile subject matter it is to paint. There are also specific exercises designed to see and capture the essence of a scene and concept which will be presented during the workshop. With their fresh field sketches in hand, students will be painting in the studio combining the color from the field with the information from their cameras. Students will be working with both to produce studio pieces where all aspects of this process will be condensed and consolidated: color, design, drawing and personal expression.

"Plein Air Workshop with George Van Hook: Approaches and Techniques"
March 20-22, 2018

George thinks of his paintings as primarily a visual response to the selected environment, be it landscape, figure or still life. “I want the color to be beautiful and the drawing firm and secure. The paintings are a marriage of external and internal forces – what emerges on the canvas should be a reflection of both the beauty of the world and the artist’s most inner response." Van Hook has been involved in Plein Air competitions, and has won numerous awards. He was invited by Plein Air magazine to be a live instructor at the Plein Air National Convention, 2015 in Monterrey, CA and released an instructional film, “How to Paint Impressionism Outdoors” by George Van Hook.

April 30 - May 7, 2018

Painting “en plein air” means being fully present to the experience of painting on location. As you observe and paint, every sight, sound, smell, and experience in the environment becomes part of your painting. That’s part of the joy that comes with working from life rather than a photo. We’ll go through the process of creating on location step-by-step, from choosing what you’re going to paint, to simplifying the scene, to drawing up a thumbnail, to blocking in the big shapes, and then to adding detail. We’ll go over the importance of understanding values and how this knowledge can liberate your colour choices and interpretation of a scene. The workshop is suitable for all levels but some experience with drawing and pastels would be helpful.

"Plein Air & Studio Workshop"
May 22-24, 2018

Painting the landscape in the studio and in the field each has its own limitations. As landscape artists, our objective must be to learn how to best utilize the advantages, and how to compensate for the inherent disadvantages, of each. This workshop will take place in both in the studio and at a nearby outdoor location, and students will practice exercises that will focus on the skills most crucial to each venue. Much of what we'll cover will emphasize simplifying the landscape into a concise visual message, looking past the overwhelming details of the landscape, especially in the beginning stages, and composing a well-edited painting. Instructor demos will be in the studio, and will include both oil and pastel.

"Realistic Watercolor Landscapes"
June 1-2, 2018

Learn to paint the dogwood tree and incorporate it into realistic watercolor landscapes. Using both wet-in-wet technique and detailed dry brush, Alan Shuptrine will teach how to literally “sculpt” a floral subject into a painting from back to front, and utilize the white of the paper to create dramatic light and shadow. Unlike most watercolorists who gradually add pigment to paper (from light-to-dark), Shuptrine was influenced by Andrew Wyeth, and his father, Hubert Shuptrine, who painted from dark-to-light, much like an oil painter. Don’t miss this unique opportunity! Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced. "The Contemporary Impressionist Landscape"
June 3-5, 2018

In many ways, Impressionism still defines the way contemporary landscape painters approach color. The Impressionists filled their paintings with brilliant color and created an entirely new coloristic metaphor for depicting natural light. In this workshop, you will learn the key to working with this “color-priority” system: that in order for the purer colors to serve as a stand-in for the luminosity of natural light, darker tonalities are rejected in favor of lighter-value colors. Strong value contrasts are replaced by color contrasts. Impressionists worked from life, but in this workshop, we will work from photographs, in the more controlled environment of the studio, where you will be able to absorb lessons at a comfortable pace. Suitable for oil, acrylic, pastel or watercolor.

The goal is to paint a tonalist painting without losing the poetry and mystery that tonalism conveys. "Plein Air: Painting the Beartooth Range, Montana"
June 25-29, 2018

Landscape painting is mostly about learning how to see; how to interpret, compare and edit the shapes and colors of the scene. We will try to see things in more of an “Abstract” way. In other words to not see literally the mountains, trees, grass, water, etc. but to see them as an interesting and beautiful arrangement of shapes and colors. This is to see them more as an artist which opens up more possibilities for things to paint and also helps us find our own voice. Students will work on what makes a plein air painting work; the mood, rhythm and movement along with an interesting and compelling arrangement of values, masses and color. Portable equipment and transportation required.

In our week together I'll teach you techniques for capturing the close-up and colourful in villages and towns, as well as the distant and scenic in French landscapes. We'll sketch iconic market scenes, fields of lavender in bloom, hillside towns and panoramas. In true travel sketching tradition, we'll pack light — carrying a small bag for art materials and a folding stool. This workshop is designed to give you confidence sketching wherever you are. This workshop will focus on plein air landscape painting with some classroom instruction and will be open to all abilities. Born 1954, in Rochester, NY, Robert O'Brien has been painting in the watercolor medium for thirty years. Since moving to Vermont in 1977, he has focused his work on landscape and architectural studies. The artist finds beauty in the ordinary, subtle reminders of everyday life in rural New England. July 16-19, 2018

During this comprehensive landscape class both plein air and studio painting will be thoroughly discussed. We will spend time outdoors painting Whidbey Island landscape, barns, buildings, boats and more.

"The Visual Journal"
July 21-22, 2018

The visual journal can tap valuable inner resources to discover self-guidance as an artist. The primary goal is to enhance your ability to find the inspiration, the spirit of play, and the creative flow to establish the daily practice of image making as fun exploration. We will employ practices to deepen your perception, and hone the craft of editing and expressing. Through journaling one discovers art making as an integral part of life and as an ongoing personal dialogue, giving the artist a wealth of ideas to work from in the studio. This approach is especially valuable when traveling and wishing to record memories — making the opportunity to slow down, draw! --and allow new experiences to leave a deeper impression.

August 16-18, 2018

Every human being is born with a creative potential and a unique destiny. . . discover their real talents and find the resources and inspiration to make a living at the work they are most equipped to do. Keith explains that his watercolors are an attempt to communicate not only what he sees visually but also what he feels and senses. To watch Keith paint is to see the blank paper come to life with strong design, bold colors, and a unique “painterly” style that combines wit, philosophy, and reporting into a single work of art. His approach to watercolor painting encourages the student to loosen up and paint with confidence. Skill Level: Beginners through all levels of advancement.

Designed for those who would like to gain a better understanding of methods and techniques that create paintings with strong impact. The goal is to capture the essence of the subject through the simplification process. The ability to do so and quickly is especially useful when painting en plein air. The process of simplification begins with visualization. In representational art, this ability to see the result of a painting is instrumental in realizing an artist’s vision. Through various exercises and step-by-step demonstrations, Keiko shows how you can take the initial inspiration through the simplification process to an expressive painting that is strong in composition and content. We will paint different subjects every day, en plein-air weather permitting.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan"
Begin your course any time

Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure.

This module introduces all the basic concepts in design and composition. We cover all the key principles and illustrate them with both examples of how to do it, and how not to do it. These courses cover important principles such as: how to layout the space in your painting effectively, how to increase the interest in your painting, how to control your viewer's eye movement, and how to utilize design elements effectively. A solid understanding of the principles in this module is essential to the visual music of your work.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork"
Begin your course any time

Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music"
Begin your course any time

In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting.
