Color Strategies for Landscape Painters
May 10-11, 2014 (9am-4pm) — The landscape painter strives to use color in ways that capture the beauty of outdoor light and convey a sense of atmosphere. Through a series of short paintings referencing photos and masterworks, you will learn how a color strategy serves as a framework to focus your color intention and keep you on track. The workshop will cover limited palettes as a means to guide color direction; "color wheel" strategies like analogous and complementary; the power of limited color groups; and color studies as a means to test various strategies. This workshop supports the notion that although a color strategy may partially borrow from nature, it is largely orchestrated in the mind of the artist. You will be encouraged to be a color explorer. Extraordinary Everyday Seeing
July 21-25, 2014 (9am-4pm) — Based on Brenda and Jed's popular book, Extraordinary Everyday Seeing, this class will be a fantastic way to put concepts into practice. We'll have specific exercises to relax and open our vision, and to practice acting from a place of curiosity and exploration, and we'll combine those with discussions on what makes a good picture - including how to create strong compositions, utilizing the light we have, paying attention to color relationships, and creating visual depth in our images. We'll have at least twice daily field sessions, daily image reviews, and lots of discussions about the process of creative photography. We'll use the towns, harbors, gardens and other areas of Whidbey as our 'field' for practicing these new ideas. Visit website

The Whidbey Island Landscape - Plein Air Painting in Oil
July 21-25, 2014 (9am-4pm) — Visit scenic locations around Whidbey Island and develop paintings from your impressions of the landscape. Richard provides easygoing, individual instruction and encourages group interaction. While demos for this workshop will be in oil, most concepts of composition are universal, so pastel painters and watercolorists are welcome. The workshop concentrates upon strong composition and lively color while examining the difference between working on location and in the studio. Through demonstrations and discussion we will consider various ways to plan a painting, apply color, and make adjustments to works in progress. Participants will learn about materials, technique, and composition, and will gain a fresh understanding of color, value, and structure. Some outdoor painting experience is helpful, but you needn’t be an expert. Visit website

The Emotional Landscape: At Water's Edge
July 28 - August 1, 2014 — This class is not about making 'pretty' pictures or 'postcard' like records of one's travels. It is about making a deeper, more authentic connection to the land and it's surrounding waters, then learning to express that connection through our photography. Inspiration will be sparked by a balance of conversation, readings, photographic exercises, meditative walks along the beach, photo examples, portfolio reviews, instructor presentations and by our fellow participants. The merging water and shore as a metaphor will loom large in our images. Daily photographic assignments and exercises will be a big part of this experience, with individual attention given. Included in this class is a sunset boat cruise to the world renowned sea caves of the Apostle Islands. Visit website

Capturing Coastal Reflections / Watercolor
July 28 - August 1, 2014 — In this workshop Janet will be focusing on capturing the light and reflections of boats on the water. We will start off in the studio working together on achieving luminous underpaintings. Janet will demonstrate several different approaches using big round brushes and full size watercolor paper. Then we will all venture out (weather permitting) to find a subject that we want to paint. Along with cameras and a sketch pad we will do a bit of plein aire to capture the fleeting light, make notes and then head back into the studio to get our drawings in place and get started. This workshop will be full of demonstrations, inspiration, and fun as Janet shows the techniques of achieving beautiful vibrant watercolors. Visit website

The Architecture of Light
July 28 - August 1, 2014 — The theme of this workshop is finding the dialogue between the architecture of man and the architecture of nature, and how to see compositions in the most grand and most humble of scenes. You will also cover the basics of perspective composition and fundamentals of drawing, and see how these basics are the root of a successful painting. Simple black and white pencil sketches from site observation, or photographs will be completed, and you will discuss how the three basic values, black/white/grey can be arranged to form the basis of a final watercolor painting. You will explore exercises that highlight the depiction of skies, water, architecture, landscapes and atmospheric conditions. Tom will provide individual attention for all students. Visit website
