The Classical Approach to Still Life in Oil
January 6 - February 10, 2015 (Tuesdays, 1-4pm) — This workshop is geared towards all levels, but a background in drawing is helpful. The focus will be on the importance of composition and lighting to create compelling still life paintings. Through demonstrations, instruction and one-on-one guidance, students will learn how to break down the painting process using classic techniques. These steps include setting up a harmonic and dynamic still life composition, creating a linear drawing, oil transfer of the drawing to the canvas, a raw umber wash in (grisaille), the ebauche underpainting followed by subsequent layers or passages of paint. Suzanne provides an interesting array of still life objects for student use during the workshop, and participants are welcome to incorporate objects from home into their still life painting. Animal Narratives
January 7 - February 11, 2015 (Wednesdays, 1-4pm) — Animal Narratives will address finding the personality of your animal subject whether a domestic pet or wild animal in your paintings and creating a story with your images. The goal is to complete 2 paintings during the course of our six weeks together. We will discuss at length your choices for photo reference in the first class. You will need one photo of an animal to do a small portrait no larger than 9 x12 for your first painting and then your second painting will consist of a larger canvas/board/panel no smaller than 18 x 24. This larger painting will be more complex in nature. We will discuss a variety of materials and techniques used to create an oil painting. Visit website

Sargent through the eyes of a Devotee
January 22-25, 2015 (9am-4pm) — You will have the opportunity to learn the terminology, methodology, and philosophy of John Singer Sargent and his teacher Carolus Duran. Both had the ability to paint the essence of a portrait in less than an hour, and both sought to capture the effect of light in a methodical way. This class will help guide students to better understand what to really look for in an organized method. After doing an informative lecture, the instructor will demo how to capture the effect of light through massing. Students will also learn about the significance of paint quality, brushwork, edge work, color notations, squinting, glancing, and likeness. Things like fashion, harmony, rhythm and lighting will be discussed to reveal their role in a beautiful composition. Visit website

Figure Drawing & Painting with Tim Rees
March 20-22, 2015 (9am-4pm) — In painting, composition involves much more than a system of rules or the placement of objects. Composition is the entire relationship of parts to whole, from the individual brushstroke to the largest shape. Brushstrokes themselves, far from being just surface texture, are carriers of direction and intent: every mark has a character and is part of the composition, moving the eye through the canvas, creating structure and meaning in painting. It's all about connections and movement. This oil painting workshop will focus on the gesture of brushwork and its role in making strong compositions. Work will be from still life. We will also use some Chinese ink painting techniques as a path to understanding the gesture of brushstrokes and gestural unity in painting. Visit website

Some knowledge in the figure is a plus, but not necessary. Students will learn how to "suggest" rather than "render" what they see. Students will create many quick drawings and paintings, as well as, work on more finished paintings. Demonstrations will occur every morning with the students painting afterwards to explore what was learned. Visit website

Classical Oil Portraiture
May 14-17, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Learn how to lay in an accurate underdrawing in vine charcoal and create a small color poster study as a tool for making color choices. Then we will create an underpainting, a wash in a thin layer of color over your underdrawing. Next we will learn to execute the overpainting. There is an emphasis on turning form and use of color in doing so. The goal is to finish the painting region by region. Finally, we will learn a glazing technique. We will be using an alkyd medium that will help our overpainting to dry overnight so that we can apply a glaze to it the next day and continue with the overpainting. Visit website
