"The Figure in Pastels"
January 5-7, 2018

In this three-day workshop, Margaret teaches a simple step-by-step pastel painting method. Working with live models, students explore drawing, composition, anatomy, proportion, value, color, and pastel application. Emphasis is on developing form using light and shadow, and layering color for a translucent effect. This workshop is for students who want to learn about color and who want to speed up and become less tight in their work. Students do not need prior pastel experience.

"Let Fechin Help You Paint Sunflowers"
March 23-24, 2018

Teacher Judith Spitz has always believed that painting “with the Masters” should be a vital part of every artist’s training. Towards that end, the student will spend the first day of class painting from Nicolai Fechin’s Sunflowers. In that capacity, the student will get a more complete understanding of the basis of Great Paintings (value, color, temperature, edges, and of course composition). On the second day, the students will set up their own still life of Sunflowers, keeping in mind the principles they learned. In this way the student and the teacher will take a journey of learning and understanding to make great paintings. Judith will demonstrate along the way. Students can work in oil or pastel.

"Pastels, Portraits, Shapes, Colors and Values 2"
March 23-24, 2018

Allen will focus on the elements of shape, value and color in creating an expressive portrait painting. The first day will start with a demonstration where he will talk about facial structure and proportion followed by specially designed exercises to help students better understand pastels and the relationships of color, value and shape. The remaining first and second day, participants will work from the model and apply the principles that have been discussed. For more advanced students, there will be discussion on creating more beautiful paintings through the manipulation of edges and value/color. Allen will work individually with each student to help them find solutions to their problems. Allen’s thoughtful and positive approach will guide students to create more successful paintings.

Learn to use the elements that make a painting stronger and exciting: creative use of color & edges, visual movement, paint application/brush handling, distribution of abstract shapes and strong design.
