Warm and Cool Light, Warm and Cool Colors
November 30 - December 4, 2009 (9 AM - 4 PM) — This workshop will use still life as a means to study light, an artist's greatest gift. In the first three days of class students will paint from "warm" studio light on larger canvases, with emphasis on composition, drawing, and value. The last two days, students will have the opportunity to paint from "cool" north daylight, indoors. The set ups will be for smaller canvases and quicker studies. The purpose is to understand the difference between the two different temperatures of light and the effect it has on color relationships. Students of all levels will find these studies valuable no matter what subject matter they may ultimately wish to pursue.  Website: http://reg129.imperisoft.com/SAS/ProgramDetail/33373332/Registration.aspx

The Value of Color
December 1-3, 2009 (9 AM - 4 PM) — The focus of this workshop will be comprehension in the use of color in your paintings. You will learn how an artist analyzes the color of objects, and the importance of using complements. Students will learn the discipline of mixing colors using a limited palette by understanding how color works. We will orchestrate a painting by exploring different palettes, and mix those shadow colors we all struggle with. Students will learn the importance of mixing their colors instead of running out to buy them. Although you will learn to mix and see color and its effects, this class will not be about endless color charts. You will learn how to bring a photo to life, and more importantly you will be learning values and discerning temperature, while keeping your paintings in harmony.  Website: http://reg129.imperisoft.com/SAS/ProgramDetail/33373335/Registration.aspx

Copperplate Calligraphy with Anne Elser
January 6 - February 10, 2010 (Wednesdays, 6-8:30pm) — Are you fascinated with how beautiful calligraphy looks and want to try it yourself? This is an introductory look at Copperplate, an elegant and elastic hand frequently used for formal invitations, documents and bridal events. After we learn each upper and lower case character, we'll spend the last two classes learning layout techniques for envelope addressing, a bit of flourishing and color experimentation. Calligraphy is less about pretty handwriting, but more about drawing each and every letter. It's about establishing a pace and rhythmic motion as you write - giving you a consistency of shapes, letters, and spaces in between words and lines. It is highly relaxing and meditative. How to Plan a Painting: A Design Boot Camp
January 13 - March 3, 2010 (Wednesdays, 6:30-9:30 PM) — Robert Henri said "a good painting is a remarkable feat of organization". Get ready to explore the first and foremost demand of picture making - good design. Composition is not being able to fit your subject matter on the canvas. Good composition is creating a beautiful and dynamic visual statement through the adaptation of an intentional plan - a coordination of parts to produce a harmonious whole. Intent and purpose trumps all particulars in the planning of a painting. The artist will go on an exploration of all the elements of picture making: proportion, dominance, subordination, movement, creating emphasis, and space. We will exploit the elements of art: value, line, texture, shape and color in our search for a unity of effect.  Website: http://reg129.imperisoft.com/SAS/ProgramDetail/33383437/Registration.aspx

Learning to Paint What You See
January 25-29, 2010 (9 AM - 4 PM) — This week of intensive study is aimed at helping the artist to see first then learn to translate the subject into the medium of paint. Seeing the end, knowing what you are after and how, will determine the way you travel there. Making a clear statement and defining your intentions comes from a solid foundation of the basic vocabulary of painting. How the principles of light work to create value and color relationships, edges, gradations and three-dimensional forms are some areas of study where we will work hard. Once the artist has a grasp of the foundational aspects of painting, they will find a freedom that allows for a clear communication and an open path to creating. Painting the Colors of St Lucia
January 27 - February 3, 2010 (sessions daily) — Put life into your landscapes. Students will use the 'alla prima' method to capture and interpret a moment in time. You will learn the importance of observation (rather than use formulas and recipes) to paint what you actually see. Through instruction, demonstration, and critique, this workshop explores composition and design, value and color harmony, and brushwork and edges. Any medium is welcome! Demonstrations will be directed at oil painters, but concepts and principles will apply to all media. Whether you are a novice just learning to mix color, or a professional needing advanced problem solving, Lori's individualized instruction will address needs at your level and push you to the next step in your personal development.  Website: http://www.toscanaamericana.com/lputnamstlucia.html

3-D Design
January 31 - April 11, 2010; no class on April 4 (Sundays, 9am-Noon) — This class uses the basic principles of Modernist Sculpture. The Renaissance in Europe 1300 to 1700
February 10 - April 14, 2010 (Wednesdays, 9:30-11am) — The Renaissance began quite suddenly about 1300 with the work of Giotto, who broke with his Byzantine masters to devote himself to the concerns of man rather than the concerns of God. Giotto was a Florentine, and for several generations the Renaissance thrived in that city with Masaccio, Leonardo, and Botticelli, and then shifted to Rome, where Caravaggio, Raphael, and Michelangelo found the environment tumultuous but motivational. Later and brilliantly, the Netherlands developed great wealth triggering a Renaissance of its own, with a radical shift from the high drama of the Italian saints to an intense scrutiny of life and love in the household. The course concludes with Vermeer and a glance at his infamous forger, still the subject of bitter controversy.  Website: http://www.ringling.edu/cssp
