Icon Writing Workshop
August 3-7, 2016 (9am-4pm) — Spend 5 full days learning the prayerful art of Iconography. Theology, the study of God in words, and iconography, the study of God in images, are two major expressions of one single faith, or we might say that an icon is a visible gospel. In making icons, the artist attempts to show this beauty and glory of God in relation to the human person, and human life immersed in God transfigured by His presence. In making icons the iconographer attempts to show the beauty and glory of God in relation to the human person. Each student will create their very own icon while they learn a brief history of Iconography and how icons are used in liturgy and prayer. Visit website

You will explore the structure of the landscape—what is important to include, as well as what to leave out. On Friday you will do color studies of the head and clothed figure in outdoor light. The Plein Air Landscape (Oil or Acrylic)
August 23-25, 2016 — The primary focus of this workshop will be painting landscapes en plein air, rain or shine. (In the case of inclement weather, we'll paint beautiful vistas from the comfort of the porch at the Gibson House.) We'll explore the entire process of creating a strong landscape painting: from building an effective composition to working with value and color and, finally, to finishing with sensitively chosen details. An emphasis will be placed on proper seeing - looking closely at the existing color and tonal relationships - and on understanding and manipulating what is seen. We will be working with the basic elements of painting, seeing them anew and in ways that can improve the craft of your painting. Visit website

Understanding Simplification and Massing for Landscape Painters
October 1-2, 2016 (9am-4pm) — The ability to simplify — to translate nature’s complexity into fewer and more readable shapes and patterns — is the most important skill for a landscape painter. Painting or drawing a shape is not that difficult, but seeing a shape through layers of color, detail and complexity requires a practiced shift in perception — an ability to see the forest and the trees. In this workshop, working from your own photos and those supplied by the instructor, you will do several guided painting and drawing exercises designed to encourage your eye and hand toward the broad, simplified shapes that are the backbone of any landscape composition. Time will also be set aside for a review of your own works (optional) as they relate to the workshop topic. Visit website

Oil Painting Essentials
November 29 - December 3, 2016 (9am-4pm) — In this workshop the core elements of successful oil painting will be explored. Drawing on lessons from his recently published book Oil Painting Essentials, Gregg Kreutz will teach and demonstrate the key factors in getting paintings to come to life. Factors such as how to create drama, how to create depth, how to make the paint dynamic, how to give vibrancy to the light, these and other critical issues will be taught through portrait, figure, and still life painting. Kreutz, a celebrated painter and teacher at New York’s Art Student’s League, believes that a hands-on familiarity with different genres helps painters gain proficiency with whatever subject they choose to paint. Mastering core principles–learning oil painting essentials–expands the painters options. Visit website

Painting Workshop: Color and Shape
December 9-11, 2016 — Painting is an arrangement of colored shapes. This fact defines the most important truth of learning how to paint. No matter what the actual subject of the painting, an artist must learn to see the world in the language of colors and shapes rather that as nameable objects. Each artist then refines and develops this language in a personal way. Working from observation (still-life) this intensive workshop will stress the nuances of direct visual perception and the importance of selection and simplification (what not to paint) in making a strong, dynamic painting. We will focus on acquiring color sensitivity, seeing shapes of light and dark, attention to edges, using shape and brushwork for gestural unity, and good studio practices. Painting Beautiful Florals
January 3-6, 2017 (9am-4pm) — Hedi Moran's workshop will focus on the process of creating impressionistic still life florals. Emphasis will be on basic concepts of composition, and the importance of transparent color lay in. Effective use of light and temperature to create vivid and lively oil paintings will also be covered, along with how to use soft and hard edges in and around the focal point. The painting process begins with laying in rough shapes (not objects) with initial colors. Refining the painting starts in the focal area and moves outward from there, with the paint getting thicker, edges sharper and color contrasts strengthened. Painting the Portrait
January 16-20, 2017 (9am-4pm) — There are many criteria that go into creating a successful portrait. While capturing a good likeness of the sitter is very important, it's not enough. A great portrait feels alive, evokes emotion, and captures the viewer through the beauty of its maker's compositional and aesthetic choices. In this portrait painting workshop, Jeff Hein will discuss what he believes to be the key elements of creating a great portrait. He will discuss creating a concept, formulating good composition and designing of marks, strokes and color. Jeff will also break down the formal process of painting a head into its most basic parts; drawing, value and color. As Jeff demonstrates daily, he will show his techniques and discuss key principles associated with these three areas. Visit website

Alla Prima Figure Painting
January 16-20, 2017 (9am-4pm) — This workshop is about painting the figure Alla Prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to the subjects. On the first morning there will be a demonstration then students will paint from the model. Students will learn to look at the nude figure and see it in terms of large, overall basic shapes. Working on a toned ground, students will start by sketching and placing the subject on the canvas. Then they will block in three simple values: light, dark and mid-tone. This helps artists to paint the subject with greater clarity and directness. This workshop will be particularly helpful to students who wish to paint more loosely and to paint their subject with greater economy. Visit website

Beyond Mud – Techniques for Working Wet-Into-Wet with Oils
January 21, 2017 (9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) — Every oil painter, at one time or another, has experienced the frustration of working in oil. We love its buttery consistency and blend-ability, but those are the same qualities that can lead to overworking and “mud.” Keeping your colors fresh and clear is not something that happens by accident – it’s a practice that involves a series of technical maneuvers that you must learn to apply with every stroke. This workshop covers everything you need to start improving your wet-into-wet practice: the law of thin > thicker > thickest, layering order, paint consistency, transparency and opacity, touch, and the right kinds of brushes to use. You’ll practice several techniques and then do a painting of your own choosing, under Mitchell’s guidance. Visit website

Plein Air with Mark Boedges
February 13-17, 2017 (9am-4pm) — "When I paint I am trying to tell the truth about my subject. Every time I put brush to canvas I am trying to find what is essential about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an authentic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my subject on that day and at that time -everything else in my painting flows from this." This workshop will focus primarily on giving students the tools to render authentic light by carefully using correct values and rigorously maintaining color temperature relationships between light and shadow. Quick Sketch Figure Painting
February 20-24, 2017 (9am-4pm) — English professes, "Immediacy is important not only because it is often the nature of people, but for me, it is the most instinctive way to paint." In this workshop, students will concentrate on developing their ability to paint quickly and accurately, a skill that can be useful in many situations. Students will work from models in natural situations (chatting, playing music, walking around, but not strictly "posed") both indoors and outdoors. The goal of this workshop is not to create a finished painting, but numerous very quick, spontaneous, yet controlled studies. Through lecture and demonstration students will gain a further understanding of the interrelated components of painting: shape, value, color and edges. "The gamut of paint is far smaller than the gamut of our visual reality. Values, color and edges must be painted relative to one another; not piecemeal." The Art of Seeing: Making a Painting Work
February 28 - March 3, 2017 (9am-4pm) — A good painting tells as much about the artist as the painting itself. Ned will talk about the whole process of putting a painting together; from the first concept to small idea and value composition studies, the use of a color study and on to the finished painting. Students will also do direct painting without preliminary studies. The emphasis will not be on the finished piece but on the process of making a more successful painting. Remember, most paintings are ruined at the start, not at the end, as not enough preliminary thought is given to them. Building Landscape Harmony with Color Strategies, Limited Palettes and Color Groups
May 6 & 7, 2017 (9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) — Landscape is an endless source of color inspiration, yet successful landscape painting is only partially about referencing the colors we see in nature. More often than not, a successful depiction of landscape light is based on the implementation of a color strategy or “color plan.” Although we will reference photos in this workshop, we never copy photographic color; instead, we learn to build color harmony by becoming color strategists and inventors. You can work with your own photographs or work with those provided by the instructor. Alla Prima Figure Painting
July 13-16, 2017 (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.) — This class is about painting the figure alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects. The class will paint from the model. Students will learn to look at the nude figure and see it in terms of large, overall basic shapes. Working on a toned ground, we’ll start by sketching and placing the subject on the canvas. Then we block in three simple values: light, dark and mid tone. By learning to simplify form, values and color, we begin to interpret and break down the figure into more understandable tones and shapes. This class will be particularly helpful to students who wish to paint more loosely. Visit website

Alla Prima Portrait Painting
September 15-17, 2017 (10am-5pm) — Alla Prima painting, or wet into wet, single session painting is a stimulating method which teaches you to be present in every brush stroke, focusing on only the essentials, ultimately teaching you great dexterity and control. With demonstration and gentle critique, Felicia will challenge you to correctly observe and record the fundamentals: shapes, values, edges and color. You will paint with the Zorn Palette, a limited primary color palette that allows for easier color harmony by eliminating the need to choose between cool or warm versions of each primary.
