Plein Air with Mark Boedges
February 15-19, 2016 (9am-4pm) — "When I paint I am trying to tell the truth about my subject. Every time I put brush to canvas I am trying to find what is essential about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an authentic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my subject on that day and at that time -everything else in my painting flows from this." This workshop will focus primarily on giving students the tools to render authentic light by carefully using correct values and rigorously maintaining color temperature relationships between light and shadow. Quick Sketch Figure Painting
February 22-26, 2016 (9am-4pm) — English professes, "Immediacy is important not only because it is often the nature of people, but for me, it is the most instinctive way to paint." In this workshop, students will concentrate on developing their ability to paint quickly and accurately, a skill that can be useful in many situations. Students will work from models in natural situations (chatting, playing music, walking around, but not strictly "posed") both indoors and outdoors. The goal of this workshop is not to create a finished painting, but numerous very quick, spontaneous, yet controlled studies. Many studies may even be wiped out during the day, as students practice their oil sketching technique. Visit website

Making a Painting Work
February 29 - March 4, 2016 (9am-4pm) — A good painting tells as much about the artist as the painting itself. Ned will talk about the whole process of putting a painting together; from the first concept to small idea and value composition studies, the use of a color study and on to the finished painting. Students will also do direct painting without preliminary studies. The emphasis will not be on the finished piece but on the process of making a more successful painting. Remember, most paintings are ruined at the start, not at the end, as not enough preliminary thought is given to them. Starts, mistakes and failures could be the order of the day, but Ned says, "We will make mistakes, work hard, and have a good time doing it!" Visit website

Painting the Figurative Subject
February 29 - March 3, 2016 (9am-4pm) — Working from the model, students will explore the art of painting portraits, nude, and costumed subjects. Through lecture and demonstration students will gain a further understanding of the interrelated components of painting: shape, value, color and edges. "The gamut of paint is far smaller than the gamut of our visual reality. Values, color and edges must be painted relative to one another; not piecemeal." These concepts and suggestions regarding value, color and edge relationship will be reinforced through exercises designed for that purpose. A direct simplified interpretation will be encouraged. A consideration of the temperature of the light source will precede painting the subjects in both cool and warm light sources. Visit website

Beyond Mud – Techniques of Working Wet-Into-Wet with Oil
March 5, 2016 (9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) — Every oil painter, at one time or another, has experienced the frustration of working in oil. We love its buttery consistency and blend-ability, but those are the same qualities that can lead to overworking and “mud.” Keeping your colors fresh and clear is not something that happens by accident – it’s a practice that involves a series of technical maneuvers that you must learn to apply with every stroke. This workshop covers everything you need to start improving your wet-into-wet practice: the law of “thin > thicker > thickest,” layering order, paint consistency, transparency and opacity, touch, and the right kinds of brushes to use. You’ll practice several techniques and then do a painting of your own choosing, under Mitchell’s guidance. Visit website

Perfecting the Painting Process
March 11-13, 2016 — Learn how to put a painting together; from the first concept to small idea and value composition studies, the use of a color study and on to the finished painting. Students will also do direct painting without preliminary studies. The emphasis will not be on the finished piece but on the process of making a more successful painting. Remember, most paintings are ruined at the start, not at the end, as not enough preliminary thought is given to them. Students will work on counter-change, color harmony and the balance of masses and shapes in size, value and color. Students will work from still life set ups and from the live model if time allows. April 15-17, 2016 (9am-4pm) — Anders Zorn was a Swedish painter who is known not only for his beautiful paintings, but also for his extensive use of a limited palette of four colors – Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, and Ivory Black. In this three-day workshop we will explore the Zorn palette, mixing a full range of portrait-perfect colors using only four tubes of paint. Working from a live model, we’ll delve into likeness, composition, and brushwork. Sarah will demonstrate all stages of the painting process, from color mixing to lighting the model. Visit website

Building Landscape Harmony with Color Strategies
May 7-8, 2016 (9am-4pm) — Landscape is an endless source of color inspiration, yet successful landscape paintings are only partially about referencing the colors we see in nature. More often than not, a successful depiction of landscape light is based on the implementation of a color strategy or “color plan.” Although we will reference photos in this workshop, we never copy photographic color; instead, we learn to build color harmony by becoming color strategists and inventors. This is not a class for first-time painters; however, it is ideally suited for either plein air or studio landscape painters who want to expand their color vocabulary. Visit website

And creating a pleasing landscape painting is no different. We will explore focal points, visual pathways, drawing execution, value and color, and one of my very favorite topics… Color Temperature! All of these elements play a huge role in creating a successful painting and we will work together to achieve just that. Visit website

Icon Writing Workshop
August 3-7, 2016 (9am-4pm) — Spend 5 full days learning the prayerful art of Iconography. Theology, the study of God in words, and iconography, the study of God in images, are two major expressions of one single faith, or we might say that an icon is a visible gospel. In making icons, the artist attempts to show this beauty and glory of God in relation to the human person, and human life immersed in God transfigured by His presence. In making icons the iconographer attempts to show the beauty and glory of God in relation to the human person. Each student will create their very own icon while they learn a brief history of Iconography and how icons are used in liturgy and prayer. Visit website

Capturing the Essence in Portraiture With Shana
August 7-11, 2016 (9:30am - 4:30pm) — All work in this course is done from a life model. Shana will show her delicate way of weaving with pencil and paint to achieve realism. We will break for lunch, and she will resume instruction by giving individual attention to each student's painting. Her workshop starts with transferring a drawing to the canvas. Next she will demonstrate a pan pastel underpainting. We'll finish with the oil painting. The techniques Shana uses to create her contemporary pieces were developed by her life partner, David Kassan. In fact, David may assist Shana in teaching these workshops if his schedule allows. This is an incredible opportunity to learn portraiture from one of today's top artists, in a comfortable home atmosphere. Visit website

We'll explore the entire process of creating a strong landscape painting: from building an effective composition to working with value and color and, finally, to finishing with sensitively chosen details. An emphasis will be placed on proper seeing - looking closely at the existing color and tonal relationships - and on understanding and manipulating what is seen. Understanding Simplification and Massing for Landscape Painters
October 1-2, 2016 (9am-4pm) — The ability to simplify — to translate nature’s complexity into fewer and more readable shapes and patterns — is the most important skill for a landscape painter. Painting or drawing a shape is not that difficult, but seeing a shape through layers of color, detail and complexity requires a practiced shift in perception — an ability to see the forest and the trees. In this workshop, working from your own photos and those supplied by the instructor, you will do several guided painting and drawing exercises designed to encourage your eye and hand toward the broad, simplified shapes that are the backbone of any landscape composition. Time will also be set aside for a review of your own works (optional) as they relate to the workshop topic. Visit website

Painting Workshop with Gary Bodnar
November 11-12, 2016 — Students bring current paintings they have already started to this workshop where Gary will critique and assist them in completion. You will learn to develop energy by incorporating dramatic brushwork, color, and expression. Gary describes his work as strong and colorful with an expressionistic style. “The power of juxtaposing or placing one color on top of another to create an image is what drives my paintings,” he says. Primarily Bodner considers himself a colorist and is constantly looking for the interplay of colors on his canvases. He says he has been inspired by works of Cezanne, Van Gogh and Philip Johnson, architect. His medium is ever involving and he is currently exploring the use of oil based house paint. Visit website

Painting Workshop: Color and Shape
December 9-11, 2016 — Painting is an arrangement of colored shapes. This fact defines the most important truth of learning how to paint. No matter what the actual subject of the painting, an artist must learn to see the world in the language of colors and shapes rather that as nameable objects. Each artist then refines and develops this language in a personal way. Working from observation (still-life) this intensive workshop will stress the nuances of direct visual perception and the importance of selection and simplification (what not to paint) in making a strong, dynamic painting. We will focus on acquiring color sensitivity, seeing shapes of light and dark, attention to edges, using shape and brushwork for gestural unity, and good studio practices. Previous experience required. Visit website
