The Figure in Oil: In Studio and Plein Air
March 27-31, 2017 (9am-4pm) — In this workshop, the figure will be the subject matter; however, the focus will be on improving drawing skills and seeing values and colors correctly, along with understanding their relationships to each other. There will be daily demonstrations emphasizing the big shapes and establishing their relationships correctly. This provides a springboard to adding additional information, if the individual artist desires. Students will address design and technique in a manner in which the individual artist may express themselves in a personal way. Students will experience many specific assignments, which will help them to "get to the point a little more quickly." Be ready to cover a lot of canvas and to "learn through earnest mileage." Luminous Colors with Underpainting and Glazing
April 6-9, 2017 (9am-4pm) — Luminous color! As artists we are quickly attracted to and entertained by color. Creating jewel-like luminous colors is the focus of this workshop. Master artists of the past used the technique of underpainting and glazing to make their colors as beautiful and luscious as possible. Artists have traditionally used relatively slow drying media for this technique, but in this workshop students will be using an alkyd medium, which dries more quickly and is much easier and convenient to use. Students will work from still life photographs and drawings provided by Jane. Visit website

Image to Abstract 3
May 2-4, 2017 (9am-4pm) — This workshop is for the artist interested in exploring various approaches to creating completely abstract, non-representational paintings. Students will apply classical academic compositional strategies such as color theory, value structure, line, shape, proportion, contrast, repetition, harmony, unity, and more. Through a series of short exercises, students will experiment with multiple approaches to abstract painting including direct painting, layering, expressive mark-making, and geometric ordering. Acrylic paint is the preferred medium (due to its fast drying time) but oil, gouache, pastel, or watercolor are also acceptable. It is also acceptable to use an iPad/tablet with drawing software. May 3 - June 7, 2017 (Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.) — Have you always wanted to become a painter but aren’t sure how to start? This six-week course is designed for students who have very little to no painting experience and would like to learn techniques to create fresh, vibrant paintings of any subject in oils, water-mixable oils, or acrylics. Progressive exercises will be given to explore composition, value, color theory, and shape — helping you discover your innate ability to “see” as an artist. Working from photo reference, students will wrap-up the course by completing a painting of their choice. In a positive, casual, and supportive environment, you will receive one-on-one guidance. Building Landscape Harmony with Color Strategies, Limited Palettes and Color Groups
May 6 & 7, 2017 (9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) — Landscape is an endless source of color inspiration, yet successful landscape painting is only partially about referencing the colors we see in nature. More often than not, a successful depiction of landscape light is based on the implementation of a color strategy or “color plan.” Although we will reference photos in this workshop, we never copy photographic color; instead, we learn to build color harmony by becoming color strategists and inventors. You can work with your own photographs or work with those provided by the instructor. This is not a class for first-time painters; however, it is ideally suited for plein air or studio landscape painters who want to expand their color vocabulary. Visit website

Painting the Clothed Figure in the Environment: An Energized Start and Graceful Finish
May 9-12, 2017 — In this workshop, students will work from a live model to vigorously apply paint in simplified blocks. Using a limited palette, students will paint with both thin and thick paint, in conjunction with wiping paint out, to achieve a successful drawing. Students will then work on pushing values to paint in the fall of light and add a three dimensional effect. Using a grey toned canvas with paint scumbled over it, in conjunction with thick paint in the lighter areas, a fully realized figure can be achieved. Paint manipulation and brush handling will be discussed and demonstrated. Seth will discuss how this leads directly into a multiple layered studio figure painting. Seth will also discuss the similarity between painting from life and from photographs. Visit website

Painting en Plein Air with Intention: 100 Strokes or Less
June 27-30, 2017 (9am-4pm) — Discover an innovative approach to plein air painting that encourages you to be thoughtful, yet direct as you create a painting, from start to finish, in 100 strokes or less. With no opportunity to rework, this method helps you to form a clear intention with each piece. You will learn to capture the spirit of your surroundings quickly and with a limited palette. The first two days of this workshop will be devoted to completing quick studies. Deliberately counting each stroke, whether the mark is small or stretches across the entire canvas and back, these studies will provide you with practice in your decision-making process. The following two days will be spent on location applying the same methods while working on more developed, final pieces. Visit website

Painting the Portrait with James Tennison

On the first day I will give a demonstration of my painting procedure and will discuss my approach to capturing a likeness. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of accurate drawing, analyzing the planes of the head, determining correct values, mixing clean flesh tones and controlling hard and soft edges. On the following days, workshop participants will paint from the model and I will give personalized instruction and demonstrate as needed. You will then bring your observed work into the studio to use as inspiration for landscapes of your own imagining. Working on a toned ground, we’ll start by sketching and placing the subject on the canvas. Then we block in three simple values: light, dark and mid tone. Speed Portrait Painting with Dominique Medici
August 5-6, 2017 — Gaining the ability to work quickly, and with precision, is key in your development as a painter. The most efficient way to develop your observation and intuition is to practice with short poses. The time restraint forces you to forego detail, see the big picture, and focus on gesture and large masses. This is the secret behind all great works. In this class, we will work with a systematic and disciplined technique that is uniquely designed to achieve this aim. I will provide frequent demos, breaking down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps, as well as critique and instruction each session. Since simplicity is one of our goals, we will be using a limited palette of only 6 colors. Visit website

Discover a New Way of Seeing Color
August 21-25, 2017 (9am-4:30pm) — We'll start out the first two days doing still life study out of doors which will prepare us to tackle the landscape. Next two days we'll be on location painting the landscape. I'll be teaching the structure of the landscape - what is important to include as well as what to leave out. On the last day we'll do color studies of the figure (in the Hensche/Hawthorne "mudhead" tradition). We'll focus on the development of strong starts, and expressing the big masses, light key and aerial perspective with color. I'll be doing demos throughout the workshop. Painting Barns and Buildings on Whidbey Island with TJ Cunningham
September 9-12, 2017 — During this comprehensive landscape class both plein air and studio painting will be thoroughly discussed. Often, work created in the studio lacks the energy of paintings created outdoors from direct observation. However, time constraints generally limit the design, finish, and size of a plein air piece. The focus of this class will be the process of taking information from both life studies and photographs and combining them into authentic, fully realized, studio paintings - bringing the best of both worlds together. TJ will give daily demonstrations and individual attention to each student over this four day workshop. Beyond Mud – Techniques of Working Wet-Into-Wet with Oil
October 28-29, 2017 — Every oil painter, at one time or another, has experienced the frustration of working in oil. We love its buttery consistency and blend-ability, but those are the same qualities that can lead to overworking and “mud.” Keeping your colors fresh and clear is not something that happens by accident – it’s a practice that involves a series of technical maneuvers that you must learn to apply with every stroke. This workshop covers everything you need to start improving your wet-into-wet practice: layering order and the principle of “thin … thicker … thickest”, paint consistency, transparency and opacity, pressure and touch, and the right kinds of brushes to use. You’ll practice several techniques and then do a painting of your own choosing, under Mitchell’s guidance. Visit website
