Underpainting Techniques for Oil Painting
July 27 - August 17, 2015 (Mondays, 6:30-9:30pm) — Have you wanted to achieve the effects of light and vibrancy that you see in Old Master paintings? Do you want to improve the accuracy of the composition and values in your work? This class will teach traditional underpainting techniques with oil paint that can help you accomplish those goals. Breaking a painting down into as many discreet steps as possible allows you to focus on one small part of the process at a time. The result is a more accurate representation of what you are depicting and an easier journey to the finished painting. Additionally, there are effects of light that can only be achieved through layering over underpainting. The class will work from still lifes. Visit website

Think Before You Paint
August 3-5, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Much of the success of a painting is established before you ever touch brush to canvas, or pastel to paper. Taking time to plan will result in consistently better work. Look at specific elements that make up a painting and learn how to improve each one. Topics include choosing subject matter, finding a point of view, arranging elements (composition), developing a strong value structure, enhancing the focal point, making color decisions, and many other principles. This is not a theoretical class; hands-on exercises explain and reinforce each principle. Study successful paintings and explore what makes them work. Finally, apply these principles to a project that you want to develop. Lodging available. Visit website

Landscape Painting/Observation and Concept
August 11-13, 2015 — The purpose of this class is multifold: to paint from the landscape as a means of investigating exterior space, color and light; to incorporate into these paintings your comprehensive understanding of art historical styles; and to develop a contemporaneous manner in utilizing the landscape motif within your own work. We will go out to paint for the three hours of class with the purpose to better visualize color, light and space in this short time. This will lead to a richer understanding of color interaction that can benefit successive paintings that you do on your own. Properties of Painting Water
September 28 - October 2, 2015 — In this class we will be closely examining the reflective and transparent qualities of water and how to achieve that feeling of movement in a painting. The movement of water is elusive to most painters, whether it's falling from rocks or rolling onto a beach there is an understandable way to approach it. We will be working from sketches and photos to understand and depict the true look of water movement. While we will make water the centerpiece for this workshop we will be painting everything that interacts with it. Trees, sky, rocks and figure will all be discussed and painted. Painting the Classical Still Life
October 9-12, 2015 — This 4-day workshop will be dedicated to teaching my approach to still life painting. I will teach and demonstrate each step of my painting process from beginning to end. I will discuss composition, prop selection ideas, sight-size drawing, paint application, proper brush selection and handling, materials etc. Students will start with a pencil drawing of the subject which will then be transferred onto canvas and painted first with a thin color lay in. Over the next several days the student will gradually bring it to a higher degree of finish. Each day I make sure to reinforce what I teach with a demonstration to help give the students a more thorough understanding of the process and techniques involved. All levels are welcome, but drawing skills helpful. Visit website

Painting Sedona
October 10-11, 2015 — This will be an enjoyable and intense weekend workshop involving painting on-site in the Sedona landscape. We will learn the advantages of plein air painting, as well as the various approaches to working on-site and how to efficiently compose and complete plein air paintings. Emphasis will be placed on how to effectively translate the often complex three dimensional landscape onto a two dimensional plane using thumbnail sketches, limited palettes and the thoughtful use of colors, values, shapes, edges and textures. Further emphasis will be placed on the creative process to make paintings that are more than strict representations of the landscape we see. Painting from Photo Reference
October 12-16, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Some subjects are almost impossible to paint from life. Artists often use photographs for reference. Dawn teaches you how to use the photograph as something to "refer to" in the process of creating a painting rather than an image to copy. Bring your own reference photographs, either print or digital. Subject matter can be people, landscapes, interiors, or anything else that interests you. Learn techniques through lecture, power point presentations, and demonstrations as well as one-on-one instruction. Dawn's goal is to help you incorporate reference material into completed paintings that reflect your personal point of view as an artist. Instruction is primarily directed to oil painters, but acrylic painters are welcome. Visit website

Bold Brush Plein Air
October 14-16, 2015 (10 - 5 on first day, then 9 - 4 with a one hour lunch) — This plein air workshop in oils is open to artists of all levels. One of the biggest challenges for plein air painters is to successfully narrow down infinite amounts of detail and express the essence of a scene. Students will learn and apply strategies for simplification, value accuracy, compositional uniqueness and much more. Shelby will share her method of applying complimentary colors as an underpainting to the white canvas, and jumping in with both feet to grab the light before it changes. She will demonstrate her technique every morning and then help each student one-on-one throughout the rest of the day. Building Strong Foundations through Underpainting for Oil or Acrylic Painters
October 17-18, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Underpainting is a powerful and reliable method that works out issues of composition, placement, and value at the very start, helping you to avoid costly mistakes and the need to rework your painting later on. Many painters have tried underpainting, or what they thought was underpainting, but were unsuccessful because they did not fully understand the method. The workshop will cover the specific technique (for oil or acrylic painters) for building strong and successful underpaintings, as well as the conceptual framework behind underpainting: that the simplified value structure and simplified shapes developed in the underpainting create stronger and more enduring compositions. The technique for underpainting in oil or acrylic is slightly different, and the instructor will demonstrate in both media. Visit website

Abstraction from Realism: An Exploration of Basic Abstract Elements
October 27-30, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Many of the students who come to Michael have a thorough understanding of more representational painting, yet their paintings lack that certain "something" which separates their work of art from the rest. This workshop is an in-depth look at how to take any object (still life, landscape or urban landscape) and use several basic compositional devices to create a finished work of art. Some knowledge in the figure is a plus, but not necessary. Students will learn how to "suggest" rather than "render" what they see. Students will create many quick drawings and paintings, as well as, work on more finished paintings. The Power of Perception
November 6-9, 2015 — Painting is an arrangement of colored shapes. This fact defines the most important truth of learning how to paint. No matter what the actual subject of the painting, an artist must learn to see the world in the language of colors and shapes rather than as nameable objects. Each artist then refines and develops this language in a personal way. Working from observation (still-life) this intensive workshop will stress the nuances of direct visual perception and the importance of selection and simplification in making a strong dynamic painting. We will focus on acquiring color sensitivity, seeing shapes of light and dark, attention to edges, using shape and brushwork for gestural unity, and good studio practices. Previous experience required. Visit website

The Figure in Oil: In Studio and Plein Air
November 9-13, 2015 (9am-4pm) — In this workshop, the figure will be the subject matter; however, the focus will be on improving drawing skills and seeing values and colors correctly, along with understanding their relationships to each other.
