Painting People
May 30 - June 3, 2016 — In my workshop, we will paint from life. Our purpose is to paint what we see, observing form carefully to express the unique image of the person posing. The method of painting is Alla Prima, painting wet on wet directly on canvas. Our concerns will be design, gesture, proportions, perspective, foreshortening, mixing cool and warm colors and the relationships of shapes, values and color in order to describe the reality and naturalism of the subject. Along with technique we will paint and discuss the aesthetic, poetic and human concerns in painting inspired by the Old Masters and evaluate contemporary realists. The Alla Prima Still Life
July 18-20, 2016 (9am-4pm) — Unlike most other subjects, the still life genre offers the artist complete control over every aspect of the final painting. The unlimited choices in color, key, arrangement and lighting one’s subject makes still life one of the most popular genres. Design begins with a concept, and ends in an arrangement of elements and lighting which is then translated into paint. Through demonstration, lecture and individual instruction, students will be offered guidance in composing, lighting and painting their subject. This class is suitable for all levels of experience, as students will compose their own arrangements in order to paint in an Alla Prima fashion (paintings which are done in a single session). Landscape Painting/Observation and Concept
July 19-21, 2016 — The purpose of this class is multifold: to paint from the landscape as a means of investigating exterior space, color and light; to incorporate into these paintings your comprehensive understanding of art historical styles; and to develop a contemporaneous manner in utilizing the landscape motif within your own work. We will go out to paint for the three hours of class with the purpose to better visualize color, light and space in this short time. This will lead to a richer understanding of color interaction that can benefit successive paintings that you do on your own. Understanding Simplification and Massing for Landscape Painters
October 1-2, 2016 (9am-4pm) — The ability to simplify — to translate nature’s complexity into fewer and more readable shapes and patterns — is the most important skill for a landscape painter. Painting or drawing a shape is not that difficult, but seeing a shape through layers of color, detail and complexity requires a practiced shift in perception — an ability to see the forest and the trees. In this workshop, working from your own photos and those supplied by the instructor, you will do several guided painting and drawing exercises designed to encourage your eye and hand toward the broad, simplified shapes that are the backbone of any landscape composition. Time will also be set aside for a review of your own works (optional) as they relate to the workshop topic. Visit website

Painting Workshop: Color and Shape
December 9-11, 2016 — Painting is an arrangement of colored shapes. This fact defines the most important truth of learning how to paint. No matter what the actual subject of the painting, an artist must learn to see the world in the language of colors and shapes rather that as nameable objects. Each artist then refines and develops this language in a personal way. Working from observation (still-life) this intensive workshop will stress the nuances of direct visual perception and the importance of selection and simplification (what not to paint) in making a strong, dynamic painting. We will focus on acquiring color sensitivity, seeing shapes of light and dark, attention to edges, using shape and brushwork for gestural unity, and good studio practices. Alla Prima Figure Painting
July 13-16, 2017 (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.) — This class is about painting the figure alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects. The class will paint from the model. Students will learn to look at the nude figure and see it in terms of large, overall basic shapes. Working on a toned ground, we’ll start by sketching and placing the subject on the canvas. Then we block in three simple values: light, dark and mid tone. By learning to simplify form, values and color, we begin to interpret and break down the figure into more understandable tones and shapes. This is the time we open our light-filled, generously appointed studios to individuals and groups in search of a space for self-directed creativity. Some groups have even made it an annual tradition! You're free to utilize special equipment like potter's wheels, jewelry torches, an etching press, or substantial easels for large-scale work. If you have special equipment or studio needs, please let us know ahead of time. Shared studio space is available for rent Tuesday through Saturday. Enjoy the luxury of an expansive workspace without having to set up or take down your materials during the continuous length of your rental.
