"Watercolor Unleashed! Watercolor on Canvas"
August 25-26, 2017

Is watercolor on canvas new to you? Explore techniques to conquer this challenging watercolor support that allows framing without glass or mat. Painting methods – both traditional and non-traditional – will be presented during the workshop. Students will learn to use minimal “acrylic underpinnings” to set the stage for vibrant colors in their paintings and pave the way for loose watercolor washes on the canvas. A landscape scene will be used for the demo painting and a photo will be provided for use, but students are always welcome to paint from their own reference material. There will be demos, exercises, critique and lots of painting time. Class time will be structured, yet open enough to accommodate the artistic spirit within us all!

"Saturated Wet Watercolor"
November 17-18, 2017

Students will experience an exciting way to paint in watercolor as they begin with a loose, abstract painting and then lift paint from the damp surface to create movement and flow, thinking only in terms of warm and cool, light and dark. Students will then slowly refine the painting by both lifting and adding paint. The saturated wet application allows easy lifting, gives soft edges, and maintains a unified background. This two day workshop will give students a real sense of this method, as timing is extremely important. Details like scales and eyes are added at the very end. The results are rich, vibrant paintings that have a few tight details surrounded by loose, painterly color.

Each day will include demonstrations of elements of landscape painting with lots of personal instruction. Develop your ability to look at the complexity of the scene in front of you, and focus your vision so that you can design a good painting that speaks of the essence of the scene, rather than merely reporting the things in it. Every painting should have a concept, and your composition, colors and techniques must work towards bringing your concept to life. The goal of Evelyn’s workshops is to share her painting knowledge and experience with each student in the way that will best help them to further their own personal development.

Unlike most watercolorists who gradually add pigment to paper (from light-to-dark), Shuptrine was influenced by Andrew Wyeth, and his father, Hubert Shuptrine, who painted from dark-to-light, much like an oil painter. We'll sketch iconic market scenes, fields of lavender in bloom, hillside towns and panoramas. My students have given me the nickname "The Art Whisperer" so I hope that you will find something to inspire, move you to engage more each day with art and the creative process in my workshop. I will give you the tools you need to simplify what you see when painting on location and break it up into manageable shapes and values. We will build on those strong foundations and learn about colour mixing, colour harmony, colour temperature and mood to help express yourself fully and paint what you really feel.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan"
Begin your course any time

Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork"

Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing.

"Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music"
Begin your course any time

In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting.
