Making a Painting Work
March 9-13, 2015 (9am-4pm) — A good painting tells as much about the artist as the painting itself. Mueller will talk about the whole process of putting a painting together; from the first concept to small idea and value composition studies, the use of a color study and on to the finished painting. Students will also do direct painting without preliminary studies. The emphasis will not be on the finished piece but on the process of making a more successful painting. Remember, most paintings are ruined at the start, not at the end, as not enough preliminary thought is given to them. Students will work on counter-change, color harmony and the balance of masses and shapes in size, value and color. Visit website

Botanical Drybrush Watercolor
April 20-22, 2015 (10 - 5 on first day, then 9 - 4 with a one hour lunch) — One of the techniques most often missing in a beginner's watercolor paintings is "dry brush". "Dry Brush" can add a great deal of energy, detail and interest to any painting in any fluid medium. Paint is taken up with very little moisture and is applied with small hatching like strokes of color done in layers in a slow weaving like process. The results are truly beautiful. The instructor will provide flowers, vegetables and fruit as subjects. Watercolor Landscapes: Plein Air / Studio
June 1-5, 2015 — Francese's style employs the use of large brushes and a wet-on-wet method where in much of the color mixing is accomplished on the paper. The only limits are the artist's imagination and willingness to experiment with every combination of color on his palette. The Francese Watercolor Workshop consists of five days of classroom instruction. That classroom may be inside of a building, at a streams edge or on a city street. Watercolor in Santa Fe, designed for You
Ongoing thru June 30, 2015 (all day) — What happens when water and pigment meet is the magic of this medium. The "happy accidents" that really encourage the artist to "go with the flow", to sometimes "let the painting paint itself". Depth is created over time with rich layers that encourage the viewer to see a story or imagine one's own. It's a patient process that allows the painting to evolve and go deeper. Workshops are custom made, one two or three days of learning new techniques, painting intuitively and "going with the flow". You will take home a finished painting, ready to frame. Watercolor from A to Z
July 6-10, 2015 — A wide variety of watercolor techniques will be discussed and demonstrated including positive and negative painting, composition, using creative colors, glazing, charging color, etc. We will begin each day with a demonstration painting that will be finished before lunch. You will see a wide variety of subject matter and styles including landscapes, floral, stylized, and abstract. My preferred method of painting is to use large brushes for most of the painting and complete the painting will a small amount of detail towards the end using smaller brushes. The end result is a watercolor painting that is loose and fresh with expressive brushwork. Following lunch each student will have the afternoon to work on their own painting with assistance when needed. Visit website

There will be a wide variety of watercolor techniques that will be discussed and demonstrated including positive and negative painting, composition, using creative colors, glazing, charging color, and many more. I will begin each day with a demonstration painting so that you will see a wide variety of subject matter and styles. My preferred method of painting is to use large brushes for most of the painting and complete the painting will a small amount of detail towards the end using smaller brushes. The Architecture of Light!
August 24-28, 2015 — Light is the constant narrative in Tom's work. In this five day workshop, painting indoors and out, Tom will demonstrate the fundamental and crucially important, identification of strong compositional subjects. No amount of technical expertise or finesse evident in a final painting can compensate for a composition lacking in strength and clarity of a strong idea and solid value organization. Properties of Painting Water
September 28 - October 2, 2015 — In this class we will be closely examining the reflective and transparent qualities of water and how to achieve that feeling of movement in a painting. The movement of water is elusive to most painters, whether it's falling from rocks or rolling onto a beach there is an understandable way to approach it. We will be working from sketches and photos to understand and depict the true look of water movement. While we will make water the centerpiece for this workshop we will be painting everything that interacts with it. Trees, sky, rocks and figure will all be discussed and painted. John has developed an effective syllabus for the week, and will tailor the class to individual levels and needs. Visit website

Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure. Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Visit website
