Watercolor from A to Z

You will see a wide variety of subject matter and styles including landscapes, floral, stylized, and abstract. My preferred method of painting is to use large brushes for most of the painting and complete the painting will a small amount of detail towards the end using smaller brushes. The end result is a watercolor painting that is loose and fresh with expressive brushwork. The Architecture of Light!
August 24-28, 2015 — Light is the constant narrative in Tom's work. When he decides on what to paint, he concentrate less on specific objects - and more on the strength of a strong abstract value composition of darks and lights. In this five day workshop, painting indoors and out, Tom will demonstrate the fundamental and crucially important, identification of strong compositional subjects. No amount of technical expertise or finesse evident in a final painting can compensate for a composition lacking in strength and clarity of a strong idea and solid value organization. You'll practice looking for the beautiful and infinite compositions in the most grand and most humble of scenes; Mid Coast Maine offers a great variety of scenic choices that will challenge and excite you! Properties of Painting Water
September 28 - October 2, 2015 — In this class we will be closely examining the reflective and transparent qualities of water and how to achieve that feeling of movement in a painting. The movement of water is elusive to most painters, whether it's falling from rocks or rolling onto a beach there is an understandable way to approach it. We will be working from sketches and photos to understand and depict the true look of water movement. While we will make water the centerpiece for this workshop we will be painting everything that interacts with it. Trees, sky, rocks and figure will all be discussed and painted. A Modern Approach to Watercolor
February 29 - March 4, 2016 (9am-4pm) — The goal of this workshop is to show the untapped power of watercolor. The focus will be on how to approach this medium from a contemporary point of view, powerful, emotional and delicate, not the traditional transparent way it is looked upon. Antonio applies watercolor in a thick and juicy manner, giving his subjects a startling boldness. Learn how attention to details and unusual perspective make for poetic, moody works with strong textural qualities. Antonio's presentation will show the materials he uses (paints, paper, palettes, brushes, etc.), his set-up and how he applies colors. He will demonstrate a modern approach to water media, while students watch and ask questions. The remainder of the day will be one-on-one instruction. Visit website

September 11-21, 2016 — Paint the spectacularly beautiful Amalfi Coast. We like to stay in Ravello because there are fewer tourists, no cruise ships, you can walk all over town, and, although we do take you to Amalfi and Positano, you will be happy you are not staying there. The views from Ravello are fabulous. Don’s paintings have received numerous awards in national competitions, including many awards from the American Watercolor Society. A nationally known artist and teacher, Don has conducted over 200 painting workshops throughout North America and Europe. Watercolor Energies and Composition
September 12-14, 2016 — Frank Webb is one of the nation's premier watercolor teachers and brings enthusiasm and energy to his classes, making painting an exhilarating enterprise. "My work proceeds from on-the-spot graphite drawings made from a lifetime of travels. Each drawing is edited, fused with design principles, and used as the model. With large flat brushes and plenty of water I approach the paper in a slam-bang initial wash, and end with the caress of a butterfly wing." Visit artshow.com/webb/. Visit website

Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure. Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork
Begin your course any time — Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing. Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Visit website
