"Landscape in the Studio with Dee Beard Dean"
April 26-28, 2018

Artists will receive challenging group and individualized instruction in studio painting. Dee will observe the artists’ works and help them to improve rather than change their individual styles. There will be extensive studies on color temperature and value that will make the students’ paintings “sing” and vibrate with evocative color. The remainder of the day will be spent painting and Dee will be working with artists on an individual basis. Instruction will be with oils, however all mediums are welcome.

"The Contemporary Impressionist Landscape"
June 16-17, 2018

In many ways, Impressionism still defines the way contemporary landscape painters approach color. The Impressionists filled their paintings with brilliant color and created an entirely new coloristic metaphor for depicting natural light. In this workshop, you will learn the key to working with this “color-priority” system: that in order for the purer colors to serve as a stand-in for the luminosity of natural light, darker tonalities are rejected in favor of lighter-value colors. Strong value contrasts are replaced by color contrasts. Impressionists worked from life, but in this workshop, we will work from photographs, in the more controlled environment of the studio, where you will be able to absorb lessons at a comfortable pace. Suitable for oil, acrylic, pastel or watercolor.

September 10-14, 2018

This five day workshop will focus on painting on location (plein air) as a form of study and not as a performance art. The practice is intended to heighten the artist's knowledge of nature and to elevate the artistic sensibility to it. We will discuss and examine not only "how" to create work outdoors, but also "why". This conceptual aspect of painting is the very essence of artistic intent. All media are welcome, however the daily demos will be conducted in oil.
