Saturated Wet Watercolor: Flowers or Koi Fish
February 18-19, 2017 (9am-4pm) — Students will experience an exciting way to paint in watercolor as they begin loosely painting the negative background, thinking only in terms of warm and cool, light and dark. Students will then slowly refine painting by both lifting and adding paint. This method is perfect for Koi Fish and flowers as they have soft edges. The saturated wet paper allows easy lifting, gives soft edges, and maintains a unified background. This two-day workshop will give students a real sense of this method, as timing is extremely important. The class will begin with a loose abstract painting and then lift paint from the damp surface to create the movement and flow. Students will add details like scales at the very end. The results are stunning with rich, vibrant colors. Create beautiful paintings that have a few tight details surrounded by loose, painterly color. Visit website

A Modern Approach to Watercolor
February 20-24, 2017 (9am-4pm) — The goal of this workshop is to show the untapped power of watercolor. The focus will be on how to approach this medium from a contemporary point of view, powerful, emotional and delicate, not the traditional transparent way it is looked upon. Antonio applies watercolor in a thick and juicy manner, giving his subjects a startling boldness. Learn how attention to details and unusual perspective make for poetic, moody works with strong textural qualities. Antonio's presentation will show the materials he uses (paints, paper, palettes, brushes, etc.), his set-up and how he applies colors. He will demonstrate a modern approach to water media, while students watch and ask questions. The remainder of the day will be one-on-one instruction. Visit website

Sketchbook to Studio
June 5-9, 2017 — In this workshop you will learn how to sketch on location in preparation for more studied studio pieces. After working on-site you will return to the studio, equipped with sketches and photographs, to begin a refined painting. Iain will show you how to translate the expressive energy from your sketch into a dynamic and thoughtful studio piece. You will learn how to choose dynamic views, create a pleasing composition, and most importantly how to edit information that is not needed to tell a story in your painting. There will be plenty of one-on-one time with Iain, as well as individual and group critiques. Visit website

Let’s Boss Around Color (Pastel, Acrylic, Oil, Watercolor)
June 12-13, 2017 (9am-4pm) — Many artists are afraid to turn up the colour volume in their paintings. Most artists become stuck painting only the colours they see and are missing out on taking their work to the next level — and to making artistic statements. This session will help you bring more creative interest to your work no matter what subject matter you enjoy painting. During our time together we will also touch on these foundational topics as they relate to colour: harmony, values, underpainting and the power of greys. There will be many exercises designed to ground your learning by doing! There will also be time to work on your own paintings with plenty of support as you gain insight into a new way of looking at and bossing around colour. Visit website

Elements of Landscape
June 17-24, 2017 (All Day) — The inspiration for this course is the writing of 18th century French painter P. H. Valenciennes. In his famous treatise on open air painting published in 1800 Valenciennes advocated the separate study of the individual “elements” of landscape. “Elements” is organized around morning slide shows focusing on one element of landscape: fields, trees, clouds and skies, water, time and nocturnes. Daily presentations will be followed by painting sessions dedicated to the subject element. No formal technical instruction is offered but two instructors will be available to work with participants individually. Daily reviews of work. Painting in Spain: Watercolor Sketching Workshop
June 19-26, 2017 — Join us for a week of sketching with watercolor as we explore the breathtakingly beautiful landscape and architecturally unique villages of the Costa Brava. As a practicing architect, architectural illustrator and watercolor painter, I am passionate about travel sketching and painting, and love to share that passion with others. It does not matter if you have never sketched or painted (or think you can do neither) since I believe everyone can do this with just a little coaxing and coaching. The focus will be on individual expression and exploration. There is nothing that anchors memories (the view; the feel of the sun; the sounds; the smells; the immediacy of the moment) quite like the act of sketching and painting on location. Visit website

Since moving to Vermont in 1977, he has focused his work on landscape and architectural studies. The artist finds beauty in the ordinary, subtle reminders of everyday life in rural New England. Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure. Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork
Begin your course any time — Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing. Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Visit website
