Properties of Painting Water
September 28 - October 2, 2015 — In this class we will be closely examining the reflective and transparent qualities of water and how to achieve that feeling of movement in a painting. The movement of water is elusive to most painters, whether it's falling from rocks or rolling onto a beach there is an understandable way to approach it. We will be working from sketches and photos to understand and depict the true look of water movement. While we will make water the centerpiece for this workshop we will be painting everything that interacts with it. Trees, sky, rocks and figure will all be discussed and painted. John has developed an effective syllabus for the week, and will tailor the class to individual levels and needs. Visit website

Furry Friends: Paint your Pet
January 29, 2016 (9am-4pm) — Students will experience an exciting way to paint in watercolor as they begin loosely painting the negative background, thinking only in terms of warm and cool, light and dark. Students will then slowly refine the painting by both lifting and adding paint. This method is perfect for Koi Fish and flowers as they have soft edges. The saturated wet paper allows easy lifting, gives soft edges, and maintains a unified background. This two-day workshop will give students a real sense of this method, as timing is extremely important. Students will add details like scales at the very end. A Modern Approach to Watercolor
February 29 - March 4, 2016 (9am-4pm) — The goal of this workshop is to show the untapped power of watercolor. The focus will be on how to approach this medium from a contemporary point of view, powerful, emotional and delicate, not the traditional transparent way it is looked upon. Antonio applies watercolor in a thick and juicy manner, giving his subjects a startling boldness. Learn how attention to details and unusual perspective make for poetic, moody works with strong textural qualities. Antonio's presentation will show the materials he uses (paints, paper, palettes, brushes, etc.), his set-up and how he applies colors. He will demonstrate a modern approach to water media, while students watch and ask questions. The remainder of the day will be one-on-one instruction. Visit website

Deeply inspired by the French Impressionists, Lisa has developed her own impressionist style to express the beauty of nature through forms and colors. We will do plein air painting in beautiful and spectacular villages, in colorful markets, by charming water canals and in Van Gogh’s garden in St Remy de Provence. The lavender will be in full bloom so you will also have a chance to paint these gorgeous blue fields. You will be able to follow Lisa’s loose and fresh painting approach through her demonstrations. She will help you understand perspectives better, simplify a complex scene and teach you tone values, color mixing, light/shade and composition. Visit website

Born 1954, in Rochester, NY, Robert O'Brien has been painting in the watercolor medium for thirty years. Since moving to Vermont in 1977, he has focused his work on landscape and architectural studies. The artist finds beauty in the ordinary, subtle reminders of everyday life in rural New England. Watercolor Impressions
August 1-5, 2016 — Fresh flowers in the studio will be the inspiration for the beginning of this dynamic workshop – progressing to the portrait and figure. Through a series of “fun” painting exercises, students will develop a more loose and natural approach – giving them an opportunity to be more spontaneous and expressive in their paintings. A few drawing exercises will be included for the portrait. We will work with photographs and progress to the model. Janet will demonstrate her intuitive approach throughout the workshop and work individually with each student. Some of the goals for the workshop will be to discover new color and design, applying transparent flesh tones, finding the “life” in paintings, and for students to experience their own unique “connections” in watercolor. Exploring Watercolor
August 15-18, 2016 — Watercolor paintings can be so much more than a checklist of watercolor technique. David Daniels goes beyond the basics of paint application, and teaches how to construct strong, vibrant, personality filled paintings. Technique is very important to this discipline, but it is the composition of your painting that will engage your viewer. When strong compositions and thoughtful technique are combined, it is an unbeatable combination. David shows how to carefully construct a watercolor using preliminary sketches and value studies. He will also demonstrate his methods of using multiple glazes of wet-into-wet passages to achieve unsurpassed brilliance as well as the use of masking agents to achieve jewel-like clarity. Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure. Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork
Begin your course any time — Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing. Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Visit website
