Trompe l'Oeil Painting (Super-Realism) and Scientific Painting
March 8-12, 2010
(9 AM - 4 PM)
In this workshop, Hodge will present various ideas and tricks for lighting, shadows and styles used to obtain extremely realistic qualities in a painting or drawing. Students will have the option to create a super-realistic painting, sometimes called "trompe l'oeil" (French for "fool the eye") or a scientific painting. Students who do trompe l’oeil will paint several flat objects, such as family mementos, old photographs, envelopes with interesting stamps, jewelry, leaves, keys or feathers. Students creating a scientific illustration may work on flowers, insects, seashells, Native American pottery or a medical subject. Students may work with any media in which they are comfortable, including oil, alkyd, acrylic or watercolor. Hodge will introduce and demonstrate gouache, colored pencil and silverpoint.
