Plein Air: An International Call for Works Made Outdoors

Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, OH seeks entries for a juried art exhibition, Nov 9 - Dec 7, 2018. Selected works will be eligible for an annual award ($2,500) given to a single work selected as the 'best of the entire season'. At Manifest we wonder what the context of creation does to the content of the creation. Obviously plein air can be interpreted in a traditional way, ostensibly painting the outdoors. But we are also interested in what else it could mean, in today's world. What other processes and results may be occurring in current art that qualify as plein air, regardless of whether or not they appear related to the traditional images we might conjure from art history? And what does the process of making art outdoors do for the art itself? This exhibit has no predefined expectation for type or style of work to be considered or selected. Submissions can range from the most traditional to the most conceptual or experimental two-dimensional or three-dimensional works. The only criteria is that works must somehow fulfill the theme of being made outdoors (but be exhibitable in our indoor gallery space) as primary subject, form, or content. $40 entry fee. Deadline: August 31, 2018. More info. Contact: email or call 513-861-3638.

Damned 11 - An Exhibition of Enlightened Darkness

Artists are invited to enter the 11th Annual Damned Exhibition, held October 25-27, 2018 at the Tangent Gallery/Hastings Ballroom in Detroit, MI. Within the word "damned", it is easy to envision devils and hellfire. However, it also reflects the eternal condemnation of self and the subtle mind against itself. It may reflect the emotional trappings within the haunting ghosts of the past. Perhaps the binding tendrils of our deepest longings or deprivations. Damned is an exhibition of those extraordinary artists who know that without darkness, there is no light, that beauty does reside within the repulsive and enlightenment within our darkest hours. This art may be the one true reflection of self that make us balanced within our personal damnations...or possibly it is an expressive visual therapy...or simply a sign that there is amazingly inexplicable inside without comparison. Artists of all mediums from anywhere in the world are welcome to submit their work. There are no restrictions on genre or content but the more deeply personal and powerfully introspective, the better. No entry fee. Deadline: September 13, 2018. More info.
