"Plein Air Painting: The How and Why of Landscape Painting"
September 10-14, 2018

This five day workshop will focus on painting on location (plein air) as a form of study and not as a performance art. Working on location started hundreds of years ago as a way of studying the mutable effects of weather and atmosphere and to help painters develop a closer, truer and more intimate relationship with nature. The practice is intended to heighten the artist's knowledge of nature and to elevate the artistic sensibility to it. We will discuss and examine not only "how" to create work outdoors, but also "why". This conceptual aspect of painting is the very essence of artistic intent. All media are welcome, however the daily demos will be conducted in oil.

"Painting the Figure with Expression"
October 29 - November 2, 2018

In this workshop, students will start with a loose, quick acrylic underpainting, then work over it in oil paint. The acrylic paint dries within a few minutes, making it ideal for underpainting. On the first morning there will be a demonstration, then the class will paint from the model. Painting over an underpainting allows for more building up of paint so that parts can be scraped and wiped away to expose the underlying tones and forms. This process lends itself to an expressive, more abstract approach, while creating an interplay between tones, forms, and color. In addition to brushes, students will be using plastic scrapers to add and remove paint.

"Abstract Painting: Experimenting, Risk Taking and Growth"
February 4-8, 2019

All great paintings in every style and time period are built on the abstract structure underneath the image -the use of line, space, value, color, and texture. At a primal level, it is this abstract language that moves us. Abstract painting explores the power of the purely visual. Students will not be taught to paint like the instructor. Instead, students will be encouraged to explore, take risks, and become the best version of themselves as artists. Students will be encouraged and inspired in a fun, upbeat atmosphere and go home ready to create their best work yet.

"The Art of Seeing: Making a Painting Work"
February 26 - March 1, 2019

A good painting tells us as much about the artist as the painting itself. Ned will talk about the whole process of putting a painting together; from the first concept to small idea and value composition studies, the use of a color study, and on to the finished painting. Students will also do direct painting without preliminary studies. The emphasis will not be on the finished piece but on the process of making a more successful painting. Students will work on counter-change, color harmony, and the balance of masses and shapes in size, value, and color. "Landscape Painting: Plein Air to Studio"
April 22-25, 2019

This workshop is designed to help students make sense of the chaotic landscape. Since painting is about creating a work of art, learning to interpret what you see and not just copying what you see will be emphasized. Students will learn how to find a subject and then compose and simplify the information. Value, color, and edges will be used as students work towards larger studio paintings. Daily demonstrations by the instructor as well as individual attention will be given. Plein air studies, reference photographs, and sketches will become inspiration for larger studio work. Some experience in plein air is helpful, but there is something for everyone in this workshop. In the event weather prevents outdoor work, photographs will be used.

"The Body of Work: Freedom and Focus"
July 22-26, 2019

Many artists feel that their work is all over the map, they are pulled in too many different directions, and that their creative output lacks a cohesive voice. I believe that you can work in many styles, and still have a unique and recognizable voice as an artist. In this workshop we will explore the issue of style and voice in the context of the body of work. You will choose your own focus and work deeply into it for the whole five days. Learn how deep focus allows you more freedom to explore, not less. Leave the workshop with a body of work in progress, and a broader appreciation of your own creative capacity.
