"Plein Air Painting: Landscape Concepts - Value of A Limited Palette"
August 6-10, 2018

This workshop is designed to remove the imitative burden we all seem to start with and to introduce orchestration of the landscape, especially color harmony, for strong personal statements. We are under no obligation to copy what is before us, that’s what the camera is designed to do. Concentration will be on the intellectual process of interpreting landscape to “fit” your motive. Emphasis will be placed on selecting which limited palette (of 3-6 colors) will best suit our concept. Although this is an outdoor workshop much of the discussion will apply equally to studio work and procedures. We will work on defining and developing what constitutes a strong pictorial concept and selection of only those elements in the landscape, which support that end.

"Plein Air Painting: The How and Why of Landscape Painting"
September 10-14, 2018

This five day workshop will focus on painting on location (plein air) as a form of study and not as a performance art. Working on location started hundreds of years ago as a way of studying the mutable effects of weather and atmosphere and to help painters develop a closer, truer and more intimate relationship with nature. The practice is intended to heighten the artist's knowledge of nature and to elevate the artistic sensibility to it. We will discuss and examine not only "how" to create work outdoors, but also "why". This conceptual aspect of painting is the very essence of artistic intent. All media are welcome, however the daily demos will be conducted in oil.

"Niagara Falls- Finding your focus outdoors"
September 24-25, 2018

I often see artists confused about what to focus on outdoors. Some truly don't know where to begin painting something in front of them. A better solution is not to paint a specific subject, instead, look for 'light'. An ordinary object in the right light becomes extraordinary! When you have excitement starting your painting, you can more easily carry that through to the finished piece, instead of deciding at the finish what you can do to make the painting more exciting. Learn to find a strong composition, value pattern, and you'll learn how to work with color temperature for atmospheric effects.

"A Different Approach to Painting; Cropping & Rethinking the Landscape"
September 29, 2018

Invite the viewer into your painting. Cutting off objects at the edges can have the effect of bringing the viewer into the painting and can create the illusion of events happening beyond the paper’s edge. Learn to decide where the outer edges of the painting should be and how they should contain the subject through careful cropping. Pre- and post-cropping techniques will be explored as you complete a painting. This workshop will explore creating multiple pastel paintings of the same landscape using techniques such as cropping and reformatting. Your instructor will share her clever ways of squeezing the last bit of energy out of an idea. Experience the rush of creative thinking!

"Landscape Painting from Start to Finish: Creating Atmosphere, Space & Light"
December 1-3, 2018

The sky is an ocean of atmosphere many miles deep – a transparent sea of air. As we look out into the vista, we may not be conscious of actually seeing the air but we plainly see its effects on the landscape. When painters begin to use natural lighting, they will find that nature’s value scale is immeasurably beyond their own tiny value scale. Learn how to make a true representation of any scene in nature using “relative” rather than “absolute” or actual values and color relationships. Expect concept lectures, demonstration, and individual instruction as Doug winds students through the myriad of knowledge needed for artists to develop their skills for painting beautiful and believable space. Students will be painting from photos.

"Painting for the Love of Animals and the Landscape"
December 3-6, 2018

This workshop will focus on animal portraiture and the landscape. The first two days will have animals as the subject matter – capturing their amazing spirit on canvas. Whether painting a portrait of a cow, lamb, or one’s beloved pet(s), students will take advantage of the beauty of animals to work on creating good composition, interesting brushwork and focus on values, edges, and color mixing. Students will then explore these techniques to develop exciting landscape paintings. Julee will stress the idea of taking risks, being energetic in one’s painting marks, and approaching their painting fearlessly. Students will work from their own photos and studies. Please bring good photos with interesting light and subject matter to make the most of this workshop.

"Plein Air with Mark Boedges"
February 18-22, 2019

“When I paint I am trying to tell the truth about my subject. Every time I put brush to canvas I am trying to find what is essential about that scene and to give it life on the canvas. Invariably, a significant part of this goal is achieved by simply rendering an authentic light. Whether direct sunlight or indirect ambient light, I aim to capture the particular effect that the light is having on my subject on that day and at that time everything else in my painting flows from this.” This workshop will focus primarily on giving students the tools to render authentic light by carefully using correct values and rigorously maintaining color temperature relationships between light and shadow.

"Suggesting Reality"
April 15-19, 2019

By observing and creating, the artist suggests themes that are essential to their character, and perpetuates the making and sharing of experiences. Through lecture and demonstration, this workshop will not only reinforce an understanding of composition and form, but will also explore methods to break up and strip down the subject, then reconstruct it in new and surprising ways. Students will participate in discussions regarding the subtleties, variations, lines, textures and colors that enliven our senses and captivate our interest; the way our eyes perceive things and how we make choices regarding their relative importance.

"Landscape Painting: Plein Air to Studio"
April 22-25, 2019

This workshop is designed to help students make sense of the chaotic landscape. Since painting is about creating a work of art, learning to interpret what you see and not just copying what you see will be emphasized. Students will learn how to find a subject and then compose and simplify the information. Value, color, and edges will be used as students work towards larger studio paintings. Daily demonstrations by the instructor as well as individual attention will be given. Plein air studies, reference photographs, and sketches will become inspiration for larger studio work. Some experience in plein air is helpful, but there is something for everyone in this workshop. In the event weather prevents outdoor work, photographs will be used.

"Creating Visual Impact with Strong Design and Color Harmony"
August 19-23, 2019

This workshop will help you make informed design and color decisions, therefore giving you more creative control over your chosen subject. If you cannot place your shapes correctly, and with tonal accuracy, in the beginning of your process, your chances of finishing will diminish. Finding a way to control small movements in both tone and color temperature is the key. If you want to capture the light and atmosphere of a place you have to be organized and execute your design with confidence. This class is taught both in and out of the studio for maximum learning retention and understanding. A series of skill building exercises that I have designed will help you steadily improve your paintings.

"Painting in Tuscany: Travel Sketching in Watercolor"
September 17-24, 2019

The best thing about our itinerary for travel sketching in Tuscany is the sheer breadth of subjects to choose from — that, and the near-magical light and colour of this unique part of the world. In our week together I’ll teach you techniques for capturing the close-up and colourful in villages and towns, as well as the distant and scenic in Italian landscapes. We’ll sketch, rolling hills with vineyards, olive groves, hillside towns and panoramas. In true travel sketching tradition, we’ll pack light — carrying a small bag for art materials and a folding stool. This workshop is designed to give you confidence sketching wherever you are. We’ll work spontaneously, and I’ll show you how to keep your watercolour sketches fresh and colourful.
