"Teens: Screen Printing Basics"
July 1-5, 2019
 

Silkscreen printing is a versatile process that can be used to transfer graphic images to a variety of materials, including paper and fabric. Working from imagery of their choosing, teens will learn how to plan compositions, separate and sequence colors, mix and apply ink, and successfully print. Monotype, stencil, and photo emulsion screen printing processes will be explored using water-based inks. No class on Thursday, July 4th.

"Cut and Paste: Collage and Montage (Ages 9-12)"
July 1-5, 2019
 

In this workshop, students will explore basic and more advanced collage and montage techniques, including using recycled materials, found objects, and printmaking methods to communicate an artistic vision. The works of Masters Robert Rauschenberg, Hannah Höch, Henri Matisse, Max Ernst, and more will be referenced for inspiration and instruction throughout the week. No class on Thursday, July 4th.

"Never Too Many: Printmaking Sampler (Ages 6-8)"
July 1-5, 2019
 

This workshop will focus on three different printmaking methods, including relief, collagraph, and monotype. Young artists will learn about the history and practice techniques unique to each process, followed by time to experiment and play. Single- and multi-color prints will be produced using each method. No class on Thursday, July 4th.

"Books that Fold, Twist, and Pop (Ages 3.5-5)"
July 1-5, 2019
 

In this workshop, children will learn how to design, illustrate, and engineer three-dimensional books with pockets, pop-up images, folds, scrolls, and moveable parts. Simple folded forms will be introduced first, followed by more complex, multi-page books. Pages and book covers will be created using drawing, painting, printmaking, and collage techniques. No class on Thursday, July 4th.

"Show of Hands: Puppet Art (Ages 3.5-5)"
July 8-11, 2019
 

Using a variety of materials and techniques, young artists will make a series of puppets. Children will gather inspiration for their puppets’ character traits from books, poems, and music. Individual and collaborative mixed media theaters will set the stage for everyone’s puppets to perform at PenArt and home.

"Creations in Papier-Mache (Ages 6-8)"

This workshop will introduce young artists to a variety of ways papier-mache can be used to create three-dimensional works that are sculptural and functional. Bowls, vases, sculptures, and piñatas are just a few of the possibilities. Completed with tempera paint and other media, pieces will be vibrant and durable.

"Sculptures Big and Small (Ages 6-8)"

Focusing on structure and form, this workshop will dive into the many materials and techniques of sculpture. Cardboard, papier-mache, wood, fabric, and found objects will all be used to create abstract and realistic, hard and soft sculptures. Students will look at the sculptural words of historical and contemporary artists for inspiration and instruction throughout the week.

"Painted Illusions (Ages 9-12)"

Throughout history, artists have used a variety of techniques to trick the eye of the viewer. This workshop will dive into the methods behind Optical Art, Trompe L’oeil, tessellations, and more. Children will use a variety of drawing and painting materials to create two-dimensional works that appear three-dimensional, imply movement, vibrate, hide images, and warp.

"Comics: From Beginning to End (Ages 6-8)"

Inspired by destinations both near and far, this ceramics workshop explores a variety of styles, forms, and surface design techniques. Each day, young artists will design and create functional and decorative pieces on the wheel based on the day’s global focus and lessons. "Fur, Feathers, and Scales: Clay Animal Sculptures (Ages 3.5-5)"

Nature and art cross paths in this ceramics workshop as students create their own pack of animal sculptures. Gathering inspiration from pets, creatures of Door County, and wild animals from throughout the world, children will use pinch, coil, and slab techniques to form each piece. "Lawn Ornaments: Ceramics for the Outdoors (Ages 6-8)"

Using the summer landscape as inspiration, young artists will create a series of functional and sculptural ceramic pieces for the outdoors. Lanterns, toad houses, small sculpture, garden tiles, and flower pots are just a few of the possible projects. "Teens: Mastering the Potter's Wheel"

This workshop offers the opportunity for teens to refine their skills on the potter’s wheel. Basic throwing techniques will be reviewed, and more advanced methods introduced as students create a series of plates, bowls, mugs, and more. "Teens: Mural Arts"

Murals are a powerful tool for starting conversation, building relationships, and empowering communities. Working collaboratively, students will brainstorm ideas, create preliminary drawings, transfer the final image to canvas, and render imagery with paint. The completed mural will be displayed temporarily with a community partner before returning to the PenArt campus. Small drawing and painting studies will be taken home.

In this workshop, students will learn how to use fundamental art elements to accurately draw and paint their favorite animals. Photo references, as well as possible class visits from furry, scaly, or feathered friends will provide inspiration throughout the week. Learn the history and techniques of book arts in this fundamental workshop. Students will learn how to prepare paper, design covers and pages using printmaking and marbling techniques, create simple forms, such as zines, and more complex books. A final journal will be created featuring hand painted covers, a Coptic stitch for binding, and blank pages to fill with writing and drawings.

Tunnel books are defined by their stage-like window containing different layers of images. In this workshop, students will begin by designing the image they want their book to show.
