"Painting on the Brandywine"

"Flower Painting"

"The Oil Sketch: The Landscape"

"Painting the Costumed Figure"
June 10-14, 2019
 

Work with esteemed artist and PAFA alum David Graeme Baker to envision, compose, and execute figure paintings that embody your personal vision. Working from a costumed model in an interior setting with still life elements, learn how to effectively tackle issues of pose, placement and detail through preparatory drawings and oil sketches. Use your drawn and painted studies to progress to a thoughtfully composed long pose painting that demonstrates your personal design and expressive intent. Demonstrations and discussion will address capturing the proportions and gestures of the figure, tactics for painting fabric and surrounding elements, strategies for planning extended projects, and sources of inspiration. "Figure Painting: Light & Form with Alexander Soukas"
June 13-15, 2019
 

In this three day workshop, students will be introduced to a direct painting method for painting the human figure with gesture, rhythm, accuracy, and solid structural form that can be applied to short and long term paintings. Starting with short poses, students will learn how to draw on the canvas with their brush to capture the dynamic shapes of light and shadow. The next two days will be a long pose where students will learn to control paint application, values and limited color to model three-dimensional form. "Alla Prima Still Life"
June 17-21, 2019
 

Brooklyn-based painter and PAFA alum Christine Lafuente considers her paintings “poetic responses to visual experience.” Responding to the still life motif, learn how to build an oil painting directly, with the emphasis on color. The workshop will begin with a painting demonstration, followed by painting sessions in which students will be guided through a series of focused procedures: composing a painting and establishing tonal design, mixing color, achieving harmony and palette organization, applying large color masses, and using principles of oil viscosity to build form into wet-into-wet painting.

"Plein Air Lanscapes with Aaron Schuerr"

From thumbnail sketches to planning a studio painting, we will explore the possibilities of landscape painting. Find “the story” in the landscape and paint it in a way that is direct, simple, fresh, and honest. Engage in fun exercises designed to focus on value, color, and shape. From that foundation, you’ll explore edges, atmospheric perspective, color and shape relationships, composition, and mood. Most importantly you’ll learn to paint with greater intention. Through demonstrations, group discussions, composition walks, painting exercises, and plenty of individual instruction, you will learn to approach the landscape in enthusiasm and confidence. Drawing from plaster casts is a traditional and effective way to learn to draw accurately from observation. PAFA’s beautiful and historic Cast Hall contains life-size copies of antique and Renaissance sculpture – a unique resource that has been part of the school’s curriculum for over 200 years. Master the drawing elements of gesture, proportion, volume, anatomy, tone, and composition with charcoal and colored chalk on toned paper. Progress to oil painting materials and techniques using a limited palette. Ideal for all levels, with options to draw- or paint-only based on experience. "Bringing Animals to Life with Bill Suys"

Through demonstrations, examples, and individual attention, this 4-day workshop will enhance each student’s ability to develop and execute paintings that will bring animals to ‘life’ while also building form, structure and surface.
