Just like telling a story in the words of a poem, you can also tell a story in thread and fabric. Unlike a canvas of threads, narrative stitching - uses very simple line. Narrative stitching is imperfect and beautiful showing the hand of the maker. Listen to the process of journaling with thread, talk about the meditative process of daily stitch practice. Learn simple stitches such as the running stitch and the back stitch. Learn simple techniques of "drawing" with thread. See examples of Journal stitches used on cotton napkins, pillows and eatables. Go home with an 8x8 block which is the beginning of your stitch journey. Bring your own scissors, and any embroidery threads you own. Everything else will be provided.

Students will learn what makes a great watercolor painting - the tools associated with watercolor and why they are so crucial to producing desirable results. We will practice gradated washes, form from shadows, drybrush, texture, highlights and value delineation. We will then focus on the process of developing a dynamic composition - a resolved, thoughtful, design sketch can be the difference in a successful watercolor painting. The instructor will demonstrate his painting process in a full color project with students replicating each step of the process to complete a painting. Finally, we will explore ways to utilize color to suggest the mood and ambiance of your subject. Emphasis will be placed on simplifying color theories and utilizing limited areas of the color wheel.

Fresh flowers in the studio will greet artists for the beginning of this dynamic and energetic workshop to focus on creating in a fun, intuitive and spontaneous way. After painting flowers, we will focus on an inspirational demo of “head construction” that will help students as they learn to paint people. We will continue with learning flesh tones, features, hair and background. We will also experience the joy of producing unexpected color movement. Some of our goals – capturing the gesture of the figure, discovering design, exciting flesh tones, avoiding mud, and keeping the white of the paper in our paintings. Working with clay is messy. Clay washes off easily, but students are encouraged to wear clothing suitable for studio work. Students with long hair are required to wear a hair tie. Hair ties will be available in the studio if needed. The instructor will provide guidance as students work. At the end of class, students will choose their favorite 1-2 pieces of their art to keep. Students will select a glaze for their finished pieces. Once works are bisque fired, glazing will be handled by the instructor. Completed pottery will be ready for pickup approximately 2–4 weeks after the final class. If you are unable to pick up your work, small shipping boxes are available for $15 each.

Sarah will walk the class through how to throw on the wheel step by step. If you prefer to hand build, you are welcome to bring your own idea to create. After Sarah gets the class through the first piece on the wheel, she will guide those who are hand building. At the end of the lesson, if you made more than one piece, you will choose your favorite 1 piece and select 1 glaze color. The teacher will finish the pottery by dipping it in the selected glaze and it will be ready in 2-4 weeks. Or you can have it shipped (Small boxes are $15).
