Just like telling a story in the words of a poem, you can also tell a story in thread and fabric. Unlike a canvas of threads, narrative stitching - uses very simple line. Narrative stitching is imperfect and beautiful showing the hand of the maker. Listen to the process of journaling with thread, talk about the meditative process of daily stitch practice. Learn simple stitches such as the running stitch and the back stitch. Learn simple techniques of "drawing" with thread. See examples of Journal stitches used on cotton napkins, pillows and eatables. We will practice gradated washes, form from shadows, drybrush, texture, highlights and value delineation. We will then focus on the process of developing a dynamic composition - a resolved, thoughtful, design sketch can be the difference in a successful watercolor painting. The instructor will demonstrate his painting process in a full color project with students replicating each step of the process to complete a painting. Finally, we will explore ways to utilize color to suggest the mood and ambiance of your subject. This mosaics workshop includes all materials. Students will hear a brief history of mosaics and see examples of ancient and contemporary mosaics. We will write out a positive message to put in our bottles. Then, using the pinching technique, we will make a small bottle to keep the message in. Traditionally, a mezuzah is kept in a doorway; you can choose to put a hole in it, to hang it, or leave it solid, creating a message of positivity that you can keep anywhere. Learn how to make colorful earrings, bracelets and/or pendants using "skins" of abstract paint. In this class we will cut or punch out shapes from dried "skins" of acrylic paint. We will glue them into trays of varying shapes and sizes. Then we will glue a glass or acrylic cabochon over the skin to finish off each piece. You will have many different colors and patterns of "skins" to choose from as well as a few shapes of earrings. You will make at least 2 pieces of jewelry. All jewelry is stainless steel. Working with clay is messy. Clay washes off easily, but students are encouraged to wear clothing suitable for studio work. Students with long hair are required to wear a hair tie. Hair ties will be available in the studio if needed. The instructor will provide guidance as students work. At the end of class, students will choose their favorite 1-2 pieces of their art to keep. Students will select a glaze for their finished pieces. Once works are bisque fired, glazing will be handled by the instructor. Completed pottery will be ready for pickup approximately 2–4 weeks after the final class. If you are unable to pick up your work, small shipping boxes are available for $15 each.
