"Abstract Art - Encaustic Monotype Workshop"
March 30-31, 2019

Abstract Art is a 20th-century movement characterized by the reduction of natural appearances into simplified forms; for example, constructing art on the basis of geometric shapes or intuitive gestures. The nonobjective art definition is the art that doesn’t depend on the appearance of the visual world as a starting point; the assumption is that art doesn’t have to be about anything other than formal elements: shape and color. This intense workshop is for artists who are motivated to learn more about creating expressive, simple yet bold and elegant encaustic abstract monotypes through several exercises and presentations about techniques and experimentation. Be prepared to paint looser, bolder, freer, lighter and more intuitively. Location: The Encaustic Art Institute

There is no better way of knowing and remembering what a place is really like than by drawing and writing. Our affection for the earth-toned architecture, the winding cobbled streets, the smell of incense in mysterious interiors of churches, the taste of culinary delights, overflowing textures and colors of the street markets, a late afternoon latte at a sidewalk cafe are just a few of the delights of carrying a sketch journal while traveling. Slowing down and taking it in, and filling the senses is all that is required. So, with our simple tools of paper, pencil, pen, and watercolors we will breathe in its historic charm in word and image.

Our most memorable quilts are often those that speak to special times, places, things, and people in our lives. Using your photographs as the place to begin the design process offers a personalized and memorable look to your quilts. Based on the design methods developed by Ruth McDowell, this class takes you through the design process – from photo to pictorial quilt. This style of quilt emphasizes the use of patterned cotton fabrics in unique ways yet is grounded in traditional piecing methods. The result is a quilt design with a somewhat abstract quality that is uniquely your own. This course is best suited for the confident beginner to advanced student.

June 10-13, 2019

The children’s picture book is a unique art form with visual storytelling at its heart. The unfolding of a story relies on sequential images to carry the reader from beginning to end. Add to this, the interweaving of word with image and you have a richly complex storytelling form. In this workshop, you will experiment with a variety of styles, materials, and techniques to create your own hand-bound picture book, as well as learn about the children’s book publishing process. The picture book maker has many elements available with which to shape their story; word, image, pacing, structure, format, and cover design. Each day, you will engage in playful exercises, demonstrations, and in-class activities exploring these essential elements.

"Complex Forms, Elegant Procedures: Inventive Approaches to Unconventional Materials"
June 14-15, 2019

This workshop is designed for students with an interest in experimenting with materials and exploring new artistic directions based on those experiments. The majority of artwork we encounter in the world reflects a divide between media and subject, where the media is used to create the illusion of something else. In our quest for representation and illusion, we often miss the potential of various media to exercise wonderful internal qualities. Like swimming with the current, it’s often easier to use the natural qualities of a material to locate composition than to bend it against its will. Working through an array of materials, you will examine them for their natural qualities.

"Dye-Paint Your Images: Bring Them to Life with Quilting"
July 15-19, 2019

In this workshop, you will first learn how to paint images with Procion dyes on cotton. Among other things, we will cover blending, layering, special effects and painting without bleeding. These techniques can be used to create images as complex as portraits or as simple as a line. Each student is asked to bring two or three 18" x 20" designs or drawings that they will transfer onto cloth and then paint. Then, we will explore how to use quilting to enhance the look of your painted cloth. The main objective is to use quilting lines to create depth, texture, tension, or shadowing which will give a new dimension and add visual interest to your quilt. Quilting experience required.

"The Best of Both Worlds: A New Approach to Botanical Printing"
July 15-19, 2019

Botanical printing– also known as eco-printing– has a large and dedicated following. The sustainability of materials and inherent organic beauty of the imagery is deliciously appealing. But consider a new twist on beloved printing methods. This workshop explores ten additions to botanical printing on paper/fabric substrates to create a series of collages suitable for framing, stitch, or other distinctive and personal use. Techniques include adding color or collage elements prior to printing, the use of a variety of mordants and chemical applications to enhance and shift color. Dunnewold’s unique methods for adding new and unexpected additions to the eco-printing repertoire are not for the faint hearted. It’s just too exciting!

"Process, Purpose, Passion: Introduction to Abstract Painting with Oil and Cold Wax"
July 15-18, 2019

This workshop explores the versatility and possibilities of combining oil paint with cold wax medium. Unlike encaustic, cold wax is used at room temperature to both extend the paint and serve as a medium. Utilize cold wax, tube oils, pigment sticks, powdered pigments, and a variety of implements to create meaningful abstractions filled with texture, color, and mark making. Focused on process, demonstrations and discussions will feature tools and techniques to push the limits of the medium, invite surprise, and explore possibilities of how it can be incorporated into your individual artistic practice. This workshop is well suited for those who have had some prior painting experience and who enjoy the sharing, flexibility, and happenstance of a group environment.

"The Body of Work: Freedom and Focus"
July 22-26, 2019

Many artists feel that their work is all over the map, they are pulled in too many different directions, and that their creative output lacks a cohesive voice. I believe that you can work in many styles, and still have a unique and recognizable voice as an artist. In this workshop we will explore the issue of style and voice in the context of the body of work. You will choose your own focus and work deeply into it for the whole five days. Learn how deep focus allows you more freedom to explore, not less. Leave the workshop with a body of work in progress, and a broader appreciation of your own creative capacity.

Moving beyond the traditional rectangular, flat sheet of paper, this workshop investigates the relationship between experiences in the landscape and representing those experiences in the studio. With consideration for the viewer’s interaction, create works that encompass space, tactility, and personal content. Through demonstrations, readings, and lectures, you will be introduced to the idea of creating a sense of place through materials and forms. Emphasis will be placed on the production of work. This workshop is more of an exploration of process or a way of approaching the creation of work than a tutorial on how to paint or draw. August 2-4, 2019

In this workshop, we will "play" with ways to build up layers of fabric using quilting, stitching, applique, rearranging, deconstructing, and collage. You will make at least two 12" square flat panels of thick quilting each day. (This is the basic technique I developed that I use in all of my work. I quilt first - before stitching any imagery or patterns. It is the opposite of traditional quilting.) These panels are the structures that are like your prepared canvases. They'll be used for our experiments. We'll cut parts out, reconfigure them, and, although in this class we'll be working in two dimensions, we'll start to add three-dimensional elements. Discover unexpected combinations, learn new techniques, and begin something magnificent!

"Gouacheamole! (Cubism with Gouache)"
August 2, 2019

Cubism (a style of art that preceded Abstract Expressionism), incubated a grand rebellion against Realism. Basically, cubists argued that a still life painting of a tomato fell short of showing the entire truth of that tomato and that the way to remedy that was to show all aspects of the fruit at the same time. And in order to do that, the tomato needed to be shattered/fragmented and then all its parts and pieces painted on the canvas at the same time. In this workshop we will paint with gouache on paper..... and instead of smashing tomatoes, we'll learn to use photo references to paint a portrait showing different aspects of a face all at the same time.

"Pareidolia: Collaborations with Nature"
August 23, 2019

Have you ever seen the man in the moon or a flock of sheep in the clouds? This phenomenon is pareidolia: the ability to discern a specific, often meaningful, image in a vague or ambiguous visual pattern. Begin with a photographic image of clouds, rocks, bark, and other plant matter from the workbook “Journal Starters: Nature Backgrounds, Textures & Collaborations” and use it to create an object hinted at in the patterns, textures, and designs found in the image. This transmutation will be accomplished with the use of colored pencils and/or paint. This class will not focus on the ability to create realism, but will emphasize using your imagination.

"Layers, Lines and Image"
September 20-22, 2019

Art always makes reference to other images and narrative. For our purposes we reference book pages, maps, cloth and other found materials as a starting point to inform our process from layering and cutting techniques through to stitch, paint and mark. During this workshop you will make small personal works with narrative and meaning (and humor). Low-tech methods will transform raw materials and found objects into textile art. Simple drawings, staining and coloring of cloth and paper, cutting, pasting, stitching, and collage will be our primary tactics to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. We'll make a book form, but this is not a book-binding course. (This is a 3-day workshop)

“Where do you get your ideas?” is a question I am often asked. This class has some of the answers. I designed it to teach some of my techniques along with some of my ways of finding and using source material in my own work. I think about it as my Ways and Means class. My idea is to create assignments that will be fun and straightforward, yet can lead to infinitely complex and artistic statements if students want to pursue them further. Using my clear, simple exercises, quilters will learn techniques they can apply as they wish to any quilt project they undertake.

"Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain"
September 23-27, 2019

This intensive class is designed for individuals with little or no prior drawing training and perhaps believe that learning to draw well is only possible for those lucky people with “inborn talent”. However, it has been proven that the global skill of drawing any perceived object, person or place requires five basic component perceptual skills – perception of edges, spaces, relationships, lights and shadows, and the whole or gestalt. Students participate in daily drawing exercises and critiques. Bomeisler received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute Brooklyn, New York in 1975, and has been a working and showing artist since then. He taught alongside his mother, Betty Edwards, since 1988 and since her retirement in 1998. Visit drawright.com.

We’ll explore our emotional response to the beauty of the area and paint from that perspective. A few writing exercises will help bring to the surface our responses to our travels.

This workshop is also about learning to loosen-up and paint more freely. All who attend will be able to apply the lessons learned to their own style of painting. This workshop is non media specific. "Sewing the Land I and II: fused, collaged, and quilted landscapes"
January 6-10, 2020

Each participant will create one or two landscape quilts along with several small studies. The class will explore different approaches to representing landscape, including those of artists in a variety of media. Sue will then show students how to look at the landscape, analyze it, and translate it to fabric using several fused construction methods to help them each accomplish their goals. For those that are taking this workshop for the second time, a more ambitious project can be pursued. Sue began making landscape images from raw edges, selvedges, and other odds and ends from scrap bags. From there she has gone on to add other techniques and develop a large series of work inspired by wetlands and prairies.

"Intuitive Acrylic Painting with Joan Fullerton at Tanque Verde Ranch"
January 13-17, 2020

Let’s discover deeper meanings to the intricacies of shape, line and color. You’ll learn to coax hints of reality from an abstract background, how to control values and colors for emotional emphasis, and how to suggest rather than delineate. You’ll explore working intuitively, responding to what shows up; working in a series; and learn the mixing and utilizing of neutrals for softer, more ethereal abstracts. We’ll touch on notions of confidence, procrastination, vulnerability, curiosity, courage, play, metaphor, symbolism, and competition. You will create compelling art not only by focusing on technique, but you will discover your unique "content". Beginning students will find encouragement and confidence, while more advanced students will benefit from Joan's insightful solutions to their artistic challenges.

"Five-Day Art Quilt Design Intensive"
September 13-19, 2020

Denise’s workshops are highly interactive and very hands-on, and are focused more on the development of participant creativity, confidence, and experiential exploration and learning than on rigid, one-size-fits-all lesson plans or patterns – her goal is to teach re-useable and replicable techniques. The first two days are dedicated to fabric painting – how best to mix, use, and layer (Seta sun-reactive transparent) paint; how to create and use resists; and how to cause (and control) layer-by-layer paint absorption, diffusion, blending, patterning, and mottling. The following three days focus on construction techniques and “best practices” re: turned edge appliqué, raw edge appliqué, reverse appliqué, insetting, free-form strip piecing, couching, and quilt finishing – all thematically integrated within a project-focused “working from photographs” framework.

Emphasis will be placed on forming new configurations that could be used as the motif or subject matter of a figure/ground composition.
