"Mixed Media Collage Painting"

"Abstract Mixed Media Collage"
Tuesdays, September 22 - December 15, 2026
 

This 12-week course invites students into the exciting world of abstract mixed media art. Students will explore a wide range of materials, techniques, tools and compositional strategies to create richly layered artwork. Students will receive practical advice, creative prompts, and individualized guidance as they develop their own pieces over time. Students will explore essential topics such as mark-making, texture, layering, contrast, intuitive composition, adding and subtracting, similar but different, balance, and focal points. The course encourages experimentation with tools like brushes, palette knives, color shapers, and unconventional materials. Participants will develop and refine at least one (or more) large cohesive abstract collage artwork, while also creating smaller exploratory pieces throughout the course as part of learning new techniques and materials.

"Pushing Towards Abstraction"
Wednesdays, September 23 - December 16, 2026
 

In this 12-week class we will explore ways to move beyond blending and over-polishing toward a more semi-abstract approach. With a focus on shape, color, and composition, your work can become more powerful. Bring your current work to develop each week. The instructor will help you strengthen your existing approach and refine your paintings. All subject matter and mediums are welcome- still-life, figure, landscape, et al. There will be weekly discussions or lessons, and the instructor will provide weekly one-on-one guidance for each student. Please note: This is a semi-abstract class. We will begin with representational subject matter while exploring ways to abstract it. All mediums welcome (instructor works in oil).

"The Painted Lineage"
Wednesdays, September 23 - December 16, 2026
 

In this intermediate-advanced painting course students will work from personal family photographs (historic or contemporary) to cultivate a deeper connection with one's family history, or simply to create a strong painting based on photographs that have been stashed away for years in family archives. We will address issues such as the head, proportion, simplification, and color mixing. Students will work from full color images or in sepia- this will be determined based on the references used. Students work at their own pace and will receive one-on-one instruction. Lessons will be supplemented by discussions of notable figurative painters. All mediums welcome (instructor works in oil).

"Monoprinting, Collagraph and Collage"
Tuesdays, September 29 - October 27, 2026
 

This workshop will focus on helping students transform their works on paper, including drawings, paintings and prints into mixed media pieces, with a focus on collage. Students are encouraged to bring in previous work that they consider unfinished or unsuccessful as a starting point for their mixed media experiments and creations. Students will have access to the etching press and printing inks to make new prints to add to their pieces. Instruction will be based on a student’s individual interests and skills and thus is appropriate for beginners through advanced level. See materials list for detailed information on supplies.

"Mixed Media Collage Workshop"

Mixed media art and collage offer a myriad of possibilities to combine papers, photographs, and 3D elements to make a statement, convey something personal, or create something textural, colorful, and beautiful. Develop rich and complex imagery finding inspiration from memory, literature, films, and other sources, while working in a variety of traditional and non-traditional materials. Sessions will discuss the characteristics of adhesives, paper and fabric cut-outs, wood, and plastics. Students will receive one-on-one instruction and participate in open discussions about their ideas and work. Topics include construction, storage and presentation strategies. Open to all levels.

"Paint-and-Print Monotype Abstraction"
Mondays, November 2 - December 7, 2026
 

Learn to let loose, and just make through the painterly medium of monotype! Explore the limitless possibilities of oil-based and water-based monotype, drypoint monoprint, and screenprint monotype through experimentation and spontaneous creation. Learn to break out of rigid thinking and just play with the materials with no judgment, no prerequisite skills, and no pressure. Work back into prints with mixed media techniques to expand the scope for abstraction and expression. Content includes technical advice from an artist-instructor ideally skilled in a variety of media, as well as critiques to expand your creative boundaries. Class time prioritizes access to the printing facilities, and students will be encouraged to continue developing their prints with the media of their choice outside of class.

Experience the joy of watercolor painting in combination with gouache and ink to create a range of effects! Learn techniques for layering ink and watercolor to develop a deep, rich surface as well as direct, alla prima methods while you work from your own photographs. "Painting with Paper Workshop"
