Plein Air: An International Call for Works Made Outdoors

Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, OH seeks entries for a juried art exhibition, Nov 9 - Dec 7, 2018. Selected works will be eligible for an annual award ($2,500) given to a single work selected as the 'best of the entire season'. At Manifest we wonder what the context of creation does to the content of the creation. Obviously plein air can be interpreted in a traditional way, ostensibly painting the outdoors. But we are also interested in what else it could mean, in today's world. What other processes and results may be occurring in current art that qualify as plein air, regardless of whether or not they appear related to the traditional images we might conjure from art history? And what does the process of making art outdoors do for the art itself? This exhibit has no predefined expectation for type or style of work to be considered or selected. Submissions can range from the most traditional to the most conceptual or experimental two-dimensional or three-dimensional works. The only criteria is that works must somehow fulfill the theme of being made outdoors (but be exhibitable in our indoor gallery space) as primary subject, form, or content. $40 entry fee. We realize that the learning they inspired (or insisted upon) is a chain-reaction process that develops across our lifetime. Out of respect for the artist-teacher bond, and in honor of instructors working hard to help artists tap into a higher mind relative to art and life, we offer an annual exhibit that presents works of art by current or former professor/student pairs. $40 entry fee.
