Paper clay or as many people call it, fiber clay is the process in ceramics where artists add cellulose fibers to plastic clay. These fibers burn out after the first firing leaving only the clay remaining. Adding these fibers makes the clay easier to work with and more plastic. However, many of the rules that govern regular clay do not apply to paper clay. Jerry Bennett, a leading international paper clay artist, will conduct a hands-on course which will provide an opportunity for students to explore and experience new approaches to functional pottery and sculptural forms using paper clay. Casting molten metal is one of the oldest metal techniques dating back thousands of years. Students will learn how to work both hard and soft wax. Join us for a creative two-day ceramic workshop where you'll craft your own rainstick from clay, capturing the sound of rain in a ceramic form. We’ll begin by rolling out a slab of clay and adding texture and decoration to the surface. Once you're happy with your design, you’ll shape the slab into a tube, then insert three spiraling rows of nails that will create the signature rainstick sound once the many small clay balls are added. After sealing the top, your piece will be ready for bisque firing. You’ll bring your rainstick to life by applying underglaze and glaze, enhancing the textures and details you created. This workshop is a fun and rewarding way to make a unique musical instrument.

Tonal painting is the creation of form and dimension by modulating value of color from light mass to shadow mass. Color harmony is created through an understanding of temperature shift from light to dark. Working from the still life, this oil painting workshop relates the concepts of tone, temperature, and key. The palette will be “keyed” according to position of the painter to the light source. Students will be instructed how to mix oil color, organize their palette mixtures, and maintain color harmony, while painting wet-into-wet. The two-day workshop will explore the problem of depicting the meeting of indoor and outdoor light. A figure will pose on successive days in one of the center’s classrooms framed by a window view. On the first day, we will do two (or more) small paintings to vigorously achieve the silhouette energy released in the meeting of two lights of different color and degree. On the second day, the workshop will stretch out on a slightly larger image for an all-day picture. Part of the interest of this day’s study is to develop the detail and incident within the governing fields of light and shadow. This workshop will concentrate on painting one of the most beautiful and challenging aspects of a tree: its trunk and branches. Trunks are rarely perfectly round; instead, their surfaces present a combination of flat planes and rounded forms that interlock together. The pattern of its branches, roots and rippling bark tell each tree’s life story. Our goal in this class is to simplify the tree's structure and capture its essence as effectively as possible. We will describe tree trunks using intentional brush marks and explore how small adjustments in color and value will bend branches into the foreground and background. This workshop will focus on painting “alla prima” (all at once) as well as developing greater skills of observation, simplification and painting “wet on wet” to create strong “painterly” paintings. During Session I, students will learn the basics of coiling a pine needle basket, including how to start a basket around a cabochon center, how to weave so your stitches line up on both sides of the basket, and how to change thread. Students will have the opportunity to take their beginning basket home and continue working on it to make a larger basket or just return with the started basket the following week to finish it. Learn my approach to painting on vellum during this five-day workshop at the beautiful Clos Mirabel in the south of France. We will begin by doing some exercises on small bits of vellum to learn technique and to get a feel for painting on this surface.
