"Magical Oil Portraits"
September 28, 2018

The method I teach is classified as "alla prima" or “wet on wet”. We will use reference photos of portraits, prepare substrate, and create overall strokes to plan the face and fill in details in a manner that captures the essence of the face. Though we will use our intuition, this is more of a technical class where we observe deeply, measure accurately, and apply strokes of paint that are true to the colors and values of our subjects. We will discuss concepts of realism, while aiming for magical realism, where we look within to make adjustments to the paint that we transfer from our brushes to our substrates, to make real, the vision of what we are painting.

Working on a toned ground, we’ll start by sketching and placing the subject on the canvas. Then we block in two simple values: light and dark tone. After that we begin adding mid-tones. On the first day, Joe will lecture and paint a demo explaining his process. The rest of the week will be spent painting outdoors at Joe’s favorite Island locations. Students can expect to paint two images daily — one in the morning and another in the afternoon.

"Creating Visual Impact with Strong Design and Color Harmony"
August 19-23, 2019

This workshop will help you make informed design and color decisions, therefore giving you more creative control over your chosen subject. If you cannot place your shapes correctly, and with tonal accuracy, in the beginning of your process, your chances of finishing will diminish. Finding a way to control small movements in both tone and color temperature is the key. If you want to capture the light and atmosphere of a place you have to be organized and execute your design with confidence. This class is taught both in and out of the studio for maximum learning retention and understanding. A series of skill building exercises that I have designed will help you steadily improve your paintings.
