"Luminous Colors with Underpainting and Glazing"
February 13-16, 2020

Luminous color! As artists we are quickly attracted to and entertained by color. Creating jewel-like luminous colors is the focus of this workshop. Master artists of the past used the technique of underpainting and glazing to make their colors as beautiful and luscious as possible. Artists have traditionally used relatively slow drying media for this technique, but in this workshop, students will be using an alkyd medium, which dries more quickly and is much easier and convenient to use. Students will work from still life photographs and drawings provided by Jane.

Robert will teach the importance of an understanding of values, edges, light, and color to create a powerful and memorable painting. "Still Life Painting as Fine Art"
April 6-10, 2020

Painting still life has long been a way to learn the fundamentals of painting as it is perhaps the most convenient way to study values, color relationships, form and drawing. Conundrums like what goes together, what to do with the background, how to not overwork the painting and how to set up a still life that tells a story with impact will be solved. Students will gain independent skills by setting up their own still life with relative feedback so they can go back to their own studios with new critical thinking skills. Each student will work at their own pace and at their own skill level. Daily demonstrations, critiques and discussions will be given.

"Still Life Composition and Painting"
May 1-3, 2020

This workshop will explore a powerful and rational approach to still life composition and oil painting techniques with brushes and palette knives. David adjusts his advice according to each person’s ability – from raw beginner to advanced professional. However, more advanced students will find it easier to focus on the subtleties of composition. A solid drawing background is highly recommended. David will work individually with each student to compose a still life setup. He will then give painting demonstrations while answering questions, and will help students while they work on their own paintings. Students may choose to create a new composition every day if desired, or may dig in and explore the finishing stages.

"Painting the Rose"
May 4-8, 2020

Garden roses are some of the most beautiful forms in the botanical world. They have been cultivated for centuries and bear little resemblance to the stiff generic varieties that are commonly available. In this intensive workshop painters will have an opportunity to study their complex geometry and exquisite color subtlety. The course will include an indirect method of painting and the introduction of a specific limited palette. A brief slide lecture on the history of the genre will inspire us as we explore this timeless motif. Previous painting experience is encouraged.
