Brooklyn-based painter and PAFA alum Christine Lafuente considers her paintings “poetic responses to visual experience.” Responding to the still life motif, learn how to build an oil painting directly, with the emphasis on color. The workshop will begin with a painting demonstration, followed by painting sessions in which students will be guided through a series of focused procedures: composing a painting and establishing tonal design, mixing color, achieving harmony and palette organization, applying large color masses, and using principles of oil viscosity to build form into wet-into-wet painting.

"The Still Life: From Drawing to Painting"

This workshop will focus on the different stages of capturing a still life with particular attention to accurate drawing and color. Hone your individual skills as you address formal and technical concerns within your work through various approaches to the subject matter. Engaging in the process from beginning to end, you will design and light a still life with the goal of achieving balance and rhythm. Color temperature will be addressed, as there will be a setup in warm light and one in cool light. From there, you will gain hand-on practice composing and drawing from the still life in charcoal. Master artists of the past used the technique of underpainting and glazing to make their colors as beautiful and luscious as possible. Sink your toes into the sand (or surf) and paint with Fabio. Learn to take advantage of transparent watercolor to create loose, intuitive, free and spontaneous effects in your paintings. Join Fabio Cembranelli and explore wet-on-wet techniques, practicing how to paint with no preliminary drawing. You will learn how to take advantage of your own mistakes and capture the essentials of each subject. Participants will be encouraged use their personal view, moving through the bridges that connect unexpected effects, shapes, colors, tones, lines and textures. Fabio is a regular contributor to several art magazines in South America, US, UK, Norway, France, Japan and Australia.

"Working in Pastel"

Louise Eaton has worked in oils, watercolor, acrylic, tempera, pen & ink, and pastels. She has found pastels to be the perfect medium because it is direct, spontaneous and easy to work with. She has been teaching pastels and drawing classes for over 15 years. Registration is required.
