Using Plein Air as a springboard, the class is designed for the experienced artist to "Move Forward", to strengthen their unique approach and to deepen their relationship to painting on location. The class begins with an open critique at the Crockett Studio and moves outside to paint plein air - with locations TBD.

"Calvin Liang Artist Workshop"
August 15-18, 2017

Award-winning artist Calvin Liang will be teaching with a focus on painting on location from direct observation. Plein air painting is a foundational part of training the eye to better understand the concepts of composition, design, and color harmony. Plan a composition that will most effectively capture your vision. See and use warm and cool color in landscape. Learn to command hardness and softness of the edges to create space in a painting. Consider the reasons for different paint textures and brushstroke direction. Simplify the subject through the use of design, value, color, and drawing and get the best results in a short time. "Still Life Painting / Arts Benicia"

"'Carmel By The Sea' En Plein Air"
August 28-31, 2017

Paint along the Monterey and Carmel Coastline en plain air with Plein Air Painters of America member, Randall Sexton. Open to all levels, this 3 (or 4) day workshop is especially geared to encourage the experienced artist to reach greater heights in their work. Sexton will review the basics of solid picture making - while sharing his own methods for simplifying the complex. Three days (weather permitting) will be spent on location en plain air, while an (optional) fourth studio day will focus on simplifying the figure directly (with a model). Daily demonstrations will be followed up with individual assistance at the easel.

"Rich & Glowing Still Life"

Learn to paint thin layers of transparent color to create rich, luminescent still life paintings. Discover a fresh approach to sketching in and blocking out your still life. Amanda will show you how to simplify your palette and gain a better understanding of transparent and opaque colors. Painting from her own still life setup and a large format picture, Amanda will give a painting demonstration each morning. Each student will be provided with the same printed photograph to paint from. A different grouping of objects will be discussed and painted each day. Simple strategies and plenty of one-on-one instruction will help you master warm shadows, color harmony, brush work, and composition. Class size is limited to ensure individual instruction.
