We will write out a positive message to put in our bottles. Then, using the pinching technique, we will make a small bottle to keep the message in. Traditionally, a mezuzah is kept in a doorway; you can choose to put a hole in it, to hang it, or leave it solid, creating a message of positivity that you can keep anywhere. This 12-week course invites students into the exciting world of abstract mixed media art. Paper clay, or as many people call it fiber clay, is the process in ceramics where artists add cellulose fibers to plastic clay. These fibers burn out after the first firing leaving only the clay remaining. Adding these fibers makes the clay easier to work with and more plastic. However, many of the rules that govern regular clay do not apply to paper clay. Jerry Bennett, a leading international paper clay artist, will conduct a hands-on course which will provide an opportunity for students to explore and experience new approaches to functional pottery and sculptural forms using paper clay.

Intuitive Painting with Stan Kurth in watercolor and gouache. Join Stan in this experimental workshop and learn to shift from the fixed mindset that separates traditional representational painting from abstraction to one that incorporates both. This workshop will help you learn to paint intuitively. Working with clay is messy. Clay washes off easily, but students are encouraged to wear clothing suitable for studio work. Students with long hair are required to wear a hair tie. Hair ties will be available in the studio if needed. The instructor will provide guidance as students work. At the end of class, students will choose their favorite 1-2 pieces of their art to keep. Students will select a glaze for their finished pieces. Once works are bisque fired, glazing will be handled by the instructor. We are going to use a printed circuit board technique to transfer drawn or copied design images on to metal using a copier, black laser printer and a laptop. Images are then printed onto the special Press”n”Peel blue plastic sheet. Designs are cut out with scissors, placed on the metal, and then pressed with a hot clothes iron. The design is etched with ferric chloride. Perfect for surface textures and enameling. Time permitting, we will do old school asphaltum etching resist.

Casting molten metal is one of the oldest metal techniques dating back thousands of years. Students will learn how to work both hard and soft wax. Bohls’ work is deeply rooted in a study of historical vessels. She translates these forms first by doing a series of drawings and then building forms using the coil and pinch method of handbuilding. In this workshop, Margaret will share images of a variety of historical pottery forms. She will also give a brief demonstration of her drawing techniques - used to create a visual framework for her coil-build objects and to translate historical form language into contemporary pottery forms. Creating an analog collage piece allows you to create entirely new worlds and subjects from found images and backgrounds. Qiang’s approach to still life painting will be demonstrated with particular focus on creating dramatic set ups by observing the light distribution and using bold and loose strokes to create a powerful and accurate representation on canvas. Acrylic pouring is a method for creating beautiful abstract images. The painting process is achieved by layering various methods and using different techniques and tools. Pouring is a great way to create interesting texture, patterns, and marbleized effects. In this class we will use bubble wrap to create an abstract spring garden. We’ll create a beautiful blue sky and then you’ll pick your favorite flower colors to create puddles, shades of green for the leaves and stems. We will then layer bubble wrap over the painting to create a stunning 3D flower effect. Each step you will be given options for how to proceed to make the painting your own and how you prefer.

Learn to build forms, prepare sand mix concrete, sculpt and hand carve in the soft matrix in this wet-carved concrete workshop. No power tools or hammer and chisel are required. In this class, you will hand-build a bowl on the first day using a slab of clay inside a mold to create a perfectly shaped bowl. You will then paint slip onto the surface. During the second class, you will carve through the slip using a sgraffito technique to create the design. Sarah will demonstrate. Students may follow along or create their own designs.
