Pinching is commonly thought of as a beginner's technique but has so many possibilities. We will be exploring working large, altering forms, and burnishing. The workshop will conclude with a pit-fire which smokes the works in unpredictable ways. The pots will be buried in sawdust and smoldered overnight. Jimmy's approach to working with clay is in cooperation with the material where the creator is encouraged to "listen to the clay". That is to allow the clay and the environment to help determine the ultimate size and form. This passive or intuitive method is complimented by the firing that defies ultimate control. During this one-day intensive workshop, Beth shares her unique technique with students. In the morning Beth will do a demo and show how she uses photography and simple apps on her phone to simplify forms, enhance value and emphasize composition. In the afternoon students will work from photos (either bring your own on your phone/iPad, or Beth will have prints to share). Beth uses unconventional tools including squeegees and Q-tips, along with her brushes focusing on composition, values, edges, and drawing rather than color. This six-week class introduces students to stone lithography, the traditional printmaking method of creating fine art prints from drawings made on limestone blocks. Students will learn the basics of this fascinating process, including graining the limestone to prepare it for drawing, creating an image in oil-based lithographic crayons and ink, etching the stone by means of a chemical process, inking the stone, and operating PAFA’s litho press to print an edition of prints. Students will benefit not only from expert class instruction, but also from access to PAFA’s beautiful, light-filled printmaking facilities (including its selection of limestone blocks) and plenty of monitored lab hours for outside work for the entire length of the course! In this demonstration focused, multi-week class, students will learn the foundations of enameling on metal to create lightweight, wearable jewelry. Utilizing traditional metal fabrication and cold connections, students will learn silver soldering, earwire fitting, filing, sanding, and sawing, and light forming. In the 1950s a group of young American artists burst onto the international art scene with a bold, fresh, and improvisational visual form quickly labeled Abstract Expressionism. At the forefront of this group was Jackson Pollock whose “drip” paintings came to personify the movement. After many years of painting with oil paints, I now use acrylics for about 90% of my work. In this workshop we will cover acrylic paint, mediums and supplies for both studio and plein air work, the ‘whys’ and ‘why maybe nots’ of technique and methods for working with fast drying acrylics, and how to adapt to that if you are used to paint taking forever to dry! Impressionism provides a platform for stretching the boundaries of realism. In this workshop, I will focus on color while introducing some new tools for painting Impressionistic images. While some may go more representational and others more abstract, the basic tenet of impressionism relies on broken color and a heightened sensitivity to color. I am known to rely on the palette knife to help generate highly colored images, but your tools will be of your choosing, be it palette knives, brushes, wedges, or spatchers.
