Topics include site selection and limited focus, simplification and massing, composition, starting a painting with a simple color-based block-in, and color. Though not a workshop for first-time painters, it is ideal for those who have painted before and now want a strong foundation in landscape painting, or for those who want to hone their existing landscape skills. Drawing the Quick Portrait in Conte
December 10-12, 2014 (9am-4pm) — This class will focus on the portrait drawn with conte and hard pastel. We will work from several models and poses to get a feel for the broad, gestural start, the sense of underlying structure. These materials allow a great variety of strokes and marks from a broad brush mark to a fine line, with expressive smudges and tones added to the tool-box of form building marks. The illusion of form arises not from an accumulation of detail, but from a few concise, correct choices of form. The quick portrait is about seeing the big underlying forms and bone structure. Drawing the portrait well is about making decisions about light and shadow, where a shape starts and stops. Visit website

Paintings in Oil or Pastel, with Clean Beautiful Color!
January 12-16, 2015 (9am-4pm) — A painting is beautiful in any medium as long as it is painted beautifully! Color, along with edges and value are the tripod of good painting. Many artists struggle with painting in more than one medium, but Stephanie is often told that it is hard to tell her mediums apart. Learning to use color charts effectively makes Stephanie's limited palette the easiest approach in plein air and studio work, whether in oil or pastel. In this class you will receive help in making your own color charts, if you'd like, or simply learn to understand them. Stephanie will also focus on descriptive edges, composition, values and various ways to start a painting. All of these contribute to a successful, beautiful painting. Visit website

Plein Air Painting in Historic Tubac, Arizona
January 26-30, 2015 (9am-4pm) — There are many aspects to plein aire painting, but two of the most important are creating a strong, expressive design and understanding how to interpret color outdoors. The workshop will focus on developing a sense of design and rhythm, learning to take what the landscape gives you and improve upon it. Focus will also be on how to understand the thought process of mixing color outside, using colors that will give your painting the effect of light not just copying what you see. Tubac is backed up against the Santa Rita Mountains and is surrounded by cotton woods, streams and canyons. Old adobe street scenes, as well as the Tumacacori Mission, are excellent examples of its old Spanish architecture. Visit website

Landscape Painting en Plein Air
February 16-20, 2015 (9am-4pm) — Working on location, referencing nature directly, is the best and fastest way to grow as an artist. There are both philosophical and logical justifications and reinforcements to the experience we gain from working outdoors. Logically, we can construct our paintings using the Principles to design nature to the concepts that we choose to best express our ideas. Philosophically, we are attuning ourselves with what I call the spirit of nature; that unseen force which connects on a deeper level. It is intuitive, and guides us in a different way than the logical. Instructor demos, group and individual critiques and individual attention. Expect hard work and great rewards from this class. The Figure in Pastels
February 20-22, 2015 (9am-4pm) — In this 3-day workshop, Margaret teaches a simple step-by-step pastel painting method. Working with live models, students explore drawing, composition, anatomy, proportion, value, color, and pastel application. Emphasis is on developing form using light and shadow, and layering color for a translucent effect. If you want to learn about color, if you want to speed up and become less tight in your work, this is the class for you. Students do not need prior pastel experience. Pastel is one of the most misunderstood of all media. Often confused with chalk, which is limestone and dye, pastel is actually dry powdered pigment molded into a crayon shape with binding solution. Pastel is as close as an artist can come to painting with pure color. Visit website

Making a Painting Work
March 9-13, 2015 (9am-4pm) — A good painting tells as much about the artist as the painting itself. Mueller will talk about the whole process of putting a painting together; from the first concept to small idea and value composition studies, the use of a color study and on to the finished painting. Students will also do direct painting without preliminary studies. The emphasis will not be on the finished piece but on the process of making a more successful painting. Remember, most paintings are ruined at the start, not at the end, as not enough preliminary thought is given to them. Students will work on counter-change, color harmony and the balance of masses and shapes in size, value and color. Visit website

Make Your Paintings Sing!
June 15-19, 2015 — Most artists say that color is what attracted them to painting in the first place; they also say that their number one problem is painting (or seeing) sparkling color. They marvel at the brilliant effects achieved by Sorolla, Zorn, and Monet, without understanding the principles that lead to those effects. In this oil/pastel painting workshop, you will learn to: see color accurately; mix what you see; paint the subtle color variations within a mass; capture the effect of light; create color harmony; avoid "mud"; differentiate between garish and realistic color; and more. We will discuss principles and look at paintings that embody them. Then you will do exercises to master those principles and gain a new found command of color! Visit website

Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Visit website

Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork
Begin your course any time — Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing. Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure.
