Passion for the Palette
July 9-10, 2016 (Saturdays, 9am-5pm) — Throughout history artists have used color to inspire visions, symbols, and tall tales. Class projects will include working from still life arrangements with colored lights to create brilliant optical effects with emotional resonance. Each student is encouraged to bring a personal piece in progress for color diagnosis, to then work on in the medium of their choice. Artists of all media welcome. Visit website

Landscape Painting/Observation and Concept
July 19-21, 2016 — The purpose of this class is multifold: to paint from the landscape as a means of investigating exterior space, color and light; to incorporate into these paintings your comprehensive understanding of art historical styles; and to develop a contemporaneous manner in utilizing the landscape motif within your own work. We will go out to paint for the three hours of class with the purpose to better visualize color, light and space in this short time. This will lead to a richer understanding of color interaction that can benefit successive paintings that you do on your own. I will begin with a demonstration and end with a short critique in order to get the necessary feedback and to establish a better student/instructor understanding. Visit website

Creating Abstract Imagery in Pastel
July 22-24, 2016 (9:30-4:00) — Abstraction is a shift in focus. In realistic work we have a road map based on what we are looking at and it is in front of us. In abstraction we must tear ourselves away from what we see and it becomes another way of expression. It is an internal dialogue with our own personal frame of reference. Instead of portraying the object or figure in front of us it becomes a reaction to that object or figure. Learn to loosen up, tap into your intuition, create abstract compositions, use underpaintings and pastel ground and create abstract realism with flowers and figures. This three-day workshop will give you the tools to explore the excitement of abstraction. Visit website

They are immediate, direct and tactile, require no delay or premeditation for mixing, and can be used both for intuitive quick drawing as well as for more strategically planned work. The same stick can be used to apply the pastel in many ways, the broad side to quickly cover wide areas, the edges for lines and smaller shapes, the tip for texture or detail. Self-Study Painting Courses: Notan
Begin your course any time — Why does a certain painting win first place in an art competitions? The answer lies a lot in the harmonious arrangement of black and white in the painting. A synthetic arrangement of dark and light creates an impression of beauty, regardless of either the colors used or of the subject matter. This is called "notan" from the Japanese word that means dark/light harmony. The idea is simple, but effective notan paintings are hard to do. It requires an understanding of dominant values and how to flatten values into a narrow value range. This course will help you strengthen your paintings with a simplified value transition structure. Self-Study Painting Courses: Brushwork
Begin your course any time — Brushwork (and how you apply dry media such as pastel or graphite) enhances the visual music of your work by giving it a second level of abstraction. If you zoom in on any part of the painting, it becomes an abstract painting in itself. This is one of those other skills that differentiates the real master artists. Here are some of the things you will learn in these courses: Basic brushwork techniques, Descriptive brushwork, Creating focal areas, Using suggestion, Edge variation, Optical color mixing. Self-Study Painting Courses: Visual Poetry & Music
Begin your course any time — In this course you will learn how to take into account both the abstract and representational aspects of a painting. A painting consists of visual poetry combined with visual music. The poetry of a painting is what the artist is trying to communicate to the viewer through his or her painting, and the emotion that is elicited from the viewer. The music of a painting is its sensuous, non-intellectual part. It derives from the physiological pleasure the human brain gets from making visual order out of the visual chaos of nature. Combine the two in the right way and you have a very powerful painting. Visit website
