"Watercolor Painting Workshop: Studio + Cultural Visits"
May 1-6, 2026

David goes beyond the basics and shows students how to construct strong, vibrant, personality-filled watercolor paintings. You will learn: how to find the essence of your subject matter; how to construct compelling compositions; to see shapes, not objects; how to create a color strategy; how to use frisket to achieve batik-like effects; the importance of value patterns in your work; and how to paint loosely while staying true to your subject matter. Daily one-on-one critiques and demos will be vital to helping you find your watercolor voice. We will paint in the studio each morning. You will have the choice every afternoon of a walking tour in Santa Fe with the tour leader or uninstructed painting time in the studio.

Students will go home with a gorgeous fresh floral arrangement in a container. After the flower arranging is complete, we break for a one-hour lunch. Students can bring their own, order in, or go out. The afternoon will be spent painting flowers. Jan will instruct on the painting of florals beginning with a brief demo. "Lecture: Color Science behind a Limited Palette"
May 4, 2026

Having a well-chosen limited palette is not only incredibly useful but also highly practical for plein air painting and all other studio work. That said, many artists find that a limited palette sometimes falls short—there are always a few colors they need that simply can’t be mixed from the ones they have. Through rigorous investigation, Qiang has examined color performance using a systematic process. His findings are backed by scientific evidence that supports clear reasoning and informed decision-making. He will introduce a new seven-color limited palette that he has found to be effective across nearly all genres, both in the studio and outdoors. To test its versatility, Qiang spent about a year painting exclusively with this palette.

"Creating a Realistic Sense of Light"
May 11-13, 2026

Given the priority of authentic light in my work, it is this element that I like to focus on during the three-day workshop. As such, we will focus on value and color temperature relationships above all else. While good drawing is paramount to our effort—since nothing spoils a painting faster than drawing errors—our time is better spent on the more difficult and crucial concepts of value and color temperature. Elements such as appropriate edges, surface texture, composition, and others will also be discussed as needed. We will be painting in oil.

Energize and open up your approach to figure painting through rapid, loose oil painting studies from the life model. Through short, small-scale painting exercises from the model in one-day poses, learn new ways of approaching life painting with an emphasis on keeping compositions fluid, capturing the gesture and character of the subject before getting locked into its contours, and both initiating and retaining a sense of freshness in your color and brushstrokes. "One-Day Advanced Painting Workshop"
July 25, 2026

Before a painting deserves a large canvas, it must survive the study. In this intensive one-day workshop, professional artist Vlad Duchev guides serious painters through the disciplined process that separates hesitation from mastery: structured, intentional studies. In today’s art culture, artists are often encouraged to “just paint.” But strong paintings are not accidents. They are built. A study is not a warm-up. It is not a quick sketch. It is a focused investigation. When you isolate one problem at a time — value, composition, temperature, edge, brushwork — clarity replaces guesswork. Confidence replaces correction. Authority replaces uncertainty.

Instruction will emphasize tonalist concerns of working with muted color palettes, gentle value shifts, and harmonious compositions. Through individualized guidance, participants will hone their sensitivity to tonal relationships and the expressive potential of nocturne painting.

August 14-16, 2026

Monochrome painting is art composed in a single color. It utilizes various shades or tints, so the images become incredibly evocative and most importantly what you lose in not using color you’ll gain in quality of composition and contrast. Color is no longer a distraction. The focus is on the overall composition. Also mark-making is improved by enabling the discovery of different forms and shapes with subtle tones. Painting with a single color can improve your art because it makes you concentrate on elements such as line, value, lighting and form.

"Finding Your Focus in Pastel"
April 1-3, 2027

A successful painting relies on the harmonious interplay of essential elements: color, value, technique, and a clear focal point. In this workshop, Aline explores these fundamental principles through an innovative approach—viewing subjects as abstract shapes to create compelling illustrative works. Students will work from their own photographic references, transforming them into expressive pastel paintings. Through daily painting demonstrations, Aline will guide participants in understanding color through the lens of temperature, intensity, and value, while demonstrating how to translate these concepts using pastel techniques. A key focus will be the practice of building shapes and strategically carving back into them to achieve a dynamic, painterly finish. This class is a great choice for intermediate and advanced-level pastel painters.
