That said, many artists find that a limited palette sometimes falls short—there are always a few colors they need that simply can’t be mixed from the ones they have. Through rigorous investigation, Qiang has examined color performance using a systematic process. Acrylic pouring is a method for creating beautiful abstract images. The painting process is achieved by layering various methods and using different techniques and tools. Pouring is a great way to create interesting texture, patterns, and marbleized effects. In this class we will use bubble wrap to create an abstract spring garden. We’ll create a beautiful blue sky and then you’ll pick your favorite flower colors to create puddles, shades of green for the leaves and stems. We will then layer bubble wrap over the painting to create a stunning 3D flower effect. Each step you will be given options for how to proceed to make the painting your own and how you prefer.

Qiang’s approach to still life painting will be demonstrated with particular focus on creating dramatic set ups by observing the light distribution and using bold and loose strokes to create a powerful and accurate representation on canvas. Working with clay is messy. Clay washes off easily, but students are encouraged to wear clothing suitable for studio work. Students with long hair are required to wear a hair tie. Letterpress, also known as moveable type, is the process of printing with moveable components of either wood or lead type. Today, letterpress printing has become fashionable, used to print wedding invitations, business cards, and anything with that traditional vintage look. In this six-week course, students will learn the process of setting both wood and lead type and printing on a Vandercook letterpress. Instruction will also explore letterpress as a wonderful tool for printing images in edition through the creation of pressure prints. Printing of relief blocks, registration, layout, paper size, and color will also be discussed. This class is open to beginners and advanced artists. Tuition includes a $20 lab fee.

For thousands of years and all across the world, people have been fascinated by the magic of indigo dye. In this five-day retreat, students will learn how to create graduations of blue from light to dark, and do a deep dive into shibori exploration. We will start with folded and clamped resist using Itajime shibori and then learn several stitch resist shibori techniques. Join international artist and art educator Wendy Artin at Atelier Clos Mirabel in South West France for a week-long painting workshop. Enjoy painting instruction exploring the finer details of nature through wet washes and colour, light and form. All levels are welcome from complete beginners to professionals. We will spend 5 mornings painting the live model for 2 hours, with poses ranging from 30 seconds to 20 minutes. After personally picking a still life subject from the gardens of Atelier Clos Mirabel, we will paint preparatory sketches and work on longer paintings, experimenting with wet on wet, edge control, composition, shadows, and colour. There will be one free day mid-week for visiting the surrounding area or painting on one’s own.

In this five-day workshop with Jenny Haynes you will be playing with circles and wedges, colour and transparency to create your own modern quilt. The class is based on one of Jenny Hayne’s designs (#AktersnurraQuilt) but for the Full Tilt Quilt, the circular blocks will be multiplied and flipped, cut down and reassembled to create a kaleidoscope of colour. This is also a two-in-one design where the cut-offs create a second, surprise design. Amongst the many techniques and skills covered in this class are no-pin curves, seam matching, pressing, colour work and construction. Jenny will show you how you can transform the design by altering the colours, changing the colour placement or by using prints, solids or a mix of both.
